Why XPectation was given at 12:01 1/1/2003

Here's my take on Xpectation.

It's not about Prince being slow, or to appease the folks considering suing. It's about laughing at the contract. We should appreciate that Prince hates contracts and won't sway to demands, and for the best part of the year that's all he's gotten from our gripes. This album was given out only ONE minute after the membership expired, and it was titled 'Xpectation' to boot. I have no gripes about such a mentality because this is also how I do things.

Imagine you want to give somebody something, and you really feel happy about the prospect, then that person *demands* that thing from you. All of a sudden your giving becomes a taking and of course you have a change of heart. For Prince, midnight at the end of the year comes and it's his first chance to really give something. I can't quite put my finger on why this works, but it does. When I sit in an office and get treated with contempt from the management, the most satisfying 'f#ck you' I can give back is to do the job twice as well as expected. It's giving something on your own terms.

Having read commentaries by Prince, at least by the level that he considers his club and the distribution of music to 'fams', it seems very possible that this is how Prince sees things.

[Prince, if you disagree, please contribute to this topic smile]

I think you might be right. It was a genuine surprise to get that e-mail, and a very pleasant one too. I doubt it would have been that way if we'd known in advance.

The org being down actually helped me to appreciate it more as well.

I see your point. But there are times when Prince selectively wants to live by the letter of the law (when its convenient to him) and other times when he criticizes contracts (when its not convenient to him). Seems pretty two faced.

Actually, it was known to just about everyone that year 2
club membership would end 31/12/2002.

I don't have a direct link since I never felt the need to
save this information [for what purpose anyway?]

But memberships did end on New Year's Eve. And Giotto is
right. What with the title of the album and all.

I'm just amazed at how quickly people jump at each other
over here. Someone says something and is immediatly after
attacked.

I'm not even going to debate this anymore. This whole place
is spilling with people who know jack shit and yet feel the
need to tell people who do know that they have to

"get ur facts right".

So let me just say that you are right and I am wrong and it
really doesn't matter from here on. If you want it to than
membership no doubt will end in Feb 2003 and I am mistaken
for thinking that what I read on npgmc's site was true.

Please accept my most humble appology. By the way, did you
check out the "one man jam" cd yet?

reading my previous post, I think that perhaps you might
actually be too f*cking thick to get the irony.

Oh well. What do I care, I have better things to do for
now, like "get [my] facts right".

Thanks Bambi319. It's amazing the negativity that such an innocuous thread like this can attract.

As for hhcoy's membership that "started february 2001, and ended january 2002", we're talking about year 2 and not year 1! "get your facts straight" indeed. smile

to be honest i have no idea what goes on in prince's head. he's kind of odd, sometimes, isn't he? usually i dig what he does though, and there are so many competing viewpoints in here it's hard to know which could be real.

it'd be nice if prince himself would just TELL us what goes on in his head instead of letting us guess it out on our own but guess he wants his privacy. or else, the X release was unplanned, last minute?

still and all, i'm really glad he gave us the X album. it's great and hopefully he didn't give it to us out of a grudge or something

Thats a good view, and perhaps ure right.

Eye say, just give what u said u would, and dont f*ck with people and their money. (Not sayin he didnt, but honestly..)

if u wanna play a silly game, just dont ask for bread on ure table, cause 97% of the people that are members dont have time to play "hide and seek" with prince and his music..

u know the rules when u walk a thin line.

I'm still convinced that the new "club" year doesn't start until Feb.. If the year was over our old password would not have worked (they were required to download). I believe that Prince was just showing most of the members how selfish and stupid they were. Their "Xpectations" were that they weren't going to get what was promised/contractually agreed upon. They, infact fell much short of their own and Princes' "Xpectation". I sure every member got very spoiled after last year, with all of the downloads. But, after the summer we all knew that Prince and the NPG would be on a WORLD tour. Which meant he would not be at the Park to spoil us like last year when...he didn't tour and was "home" everyday. The saddest thing about all of this is the loudest complainers are probably the loudest cheerers at the shows, as if he can do no wrong and they are just one with him when he talks about peace and love. Anyway! I gotsta go.

I am sure the next phase of the club will start soon...Why end it??? It makes no sense and overall it worked pretty well for those who took advantage of it's perks - concerts / soundchecks / aftershows. Worth it!

While smile I agree with this.. its seems like bread on the table was only part of the problem. The main glitch was Expectations (not on product alone) generated by his own "hide and seek" advertising.

Two days before NPGMC shut down the website.. he was contacted by the AGs office of MN *plus* he was under investigation for at least two counts of mail fraud. Why he shut the site down was obvious that the heat was on, but why he released the download on 1/1 may simply be the carrot and the stick for year 3. It was a great idea that everyone was hoping for.

You hit the nail on the head with "hide & seek".. Prince wanted this to be a fun and mysterious year full of surprises.. if you wrote to NPGMC telling them you wanted to join, but didn't understand things having to do with expectations of time, product and service.. your email was ignored! If this is a "Surrender all your expectations" Mystery Club.. then fine, if we want the surprises then we'll shell out the $100 with a smile. But thats not how it went down. Perhaps this will go down in Prince history as the 2nd great Fiasco.

Call me a cynic but the only part of the site working is the retail section. Clearly not ones to look a gift horse in the mouth, the club will continue to give us access until new membership is due so we can spend money in the meantime. When you are re-directed all you get is adverts for the calendar and ONA...Live!

Now that's good business sense/capitalism!

I think the guy putting the thread was right, but if not , hey? so what!

I only joine the club in December and have 2 say that for one am very pleased indeed with what has happened - Prince is odd but he really has made me laugh with the emails - and he listens too - hence empty room suddenly appears in the uk emails - didnt someone at the London check ask him about why he didnt release it - he said he had no plans to... Then he did! Cool!

If I recall correctly then Joy In Repetition had a similar kind of story. Somebody posted on the Internet that they wish Prince would play JIR, and then very soon after that Prince played it for the first time, at Paisley Park, reading the lyrics from notes.

I think the decision about whether there is a club in 2003 will be a simple one. It will depend on whether Prince thinks he can make money from it. Sorry to be so cynical, but as far as I can see he is as much a businessman as anyone else. I hope he does run it, and that he makes some money, and we get some music we want. I guess we'll see soon.
