Trent Reznor on what a good artist site should be like (and much more) http://forum.nin.com/bb/r...?30,767183
Remove all Flash from your website. Remove all stupid intros and load-times. MAKE IT SIMPLE TO NAVIGATE AND EASY TO FIND AND HEAR MUSIC (but don't autoplay). Constantly update your site with content - pictures, blogs, whatever. Give people a reason to return to your site all the time. Put up a bulletin board and start a community. Engage your fans (with caution!) Make cheap videos. Film yourself talking. Play shows. Make interesting things. Get a Twitter account. Be interesting. Be real. Submit your music to blogs that may be interested. NEVER CHASE TRENDS. Utilize the multitude of tools available to you for very little cost of any - Flickr / YouTube / Vimeo / SoundCloud / Twitter etc.
Read the whole thing, BTW, it's worth it. © Bart Van Hemelen

people are gonna shit all over you again for this bart, but i do
agree with what you're trying to do. and trent is right, too. prince just doesn't seem to have a clue. i'm pretty sure that it's the last time he's got people to sign up for anything though. he's probably got like 10,000 people worldwide max right now anyway. of those, i'm thinking 25% mights sign up blindly for future stuff or new 'websites' but the majority will wait and see. his new site should indeed be exactly as the format trent describes in the first line of the quote you posted. instead his site looks childish, kitschy and irritating. navigation is a bitch too. fun for 2 minutes. infuriating after that. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Trent is exactly right. If Prince just followed the first four sentences posted above, I would be quite happy indeed. The website is infuriating on every single level, beginning with the stupid bomb thing that you have to wait for. That he can't be bothered to put anymore content up at all is inexcusable.

Trent Reznor is an asshole, woman-basher and user. What he wrote anyone could have written 4 years ago. Nothing new there. Prince was doing innovative things online before Reznor even had his new website. Reznor gets attention because he is a media whore and trashes everyone which gets publicity in this culture. Prince is a legend and too classy to behave like Reznor. When did NIN sell out a concert, never. Anyone with half a brain knows already what to do online, he just echoed what everyone already knows, jeez.
Also, I would bet that Prince had more than 10,000 people sign up on his last campaign. More like millions of people signed up. You don't sell out 21 nights in London (one city) without a HUGE fanbase that turns to Prince's website for info. [Edited 7/9/09 6:59am] © iwonderu007

Prince knows WHAT TO DO on the internet. Instead, he CHOOSES to pursue the online music distribution on a different level, i.e., through copyright and legal means because he doesn't want to give away his music for free. If Prince actually wins in the end, Reznor will be kissing Prince's pretty tight purple ass. Prince wants more $$ to go to artists instead of giving away the milk for free. Reznor prefers free milk, just look at his new financée (blow job photos everywhere). [Edited 10/22/09 1:35am] © iwonderu007

I don't know if millions of people bought lotus but I'm sure that Prince has millions of fans email addresses (domestically & internationally). Prince is in the MAJOR league and Reznor is in the MINOR league. Just look at the media outlets that Prince has recently been on - Tavis Smiley, David Letterman, Superbowl, etc.
BART, I don't like your posts - this board is for PRINCE fans not NIN retarded fans. [Edited 10/22/09 1:36am] © iwonderu007

The one you have to sit through the stupid exploding bomb for? The one that offers you absolutely nothing else for your $77 (except for an album set you could get for $12 at Target)? Come on. So far, Lotusflow3r has done nothing for online music distribution.

Trent's very vocal about the stuff, which makes him easier to cite, but there are tons of other artists doing better web stuff than Prince. Madonna's site is about half the cost of Prince's and offers a hell of a lot more content too.

Prince is putting his time, money and mouth were he believes is a better investment in the long run. You don't make much money online but it requires an enormous amount of time, money and energy. Look at AC/DC tour in 2008, it was one of the 3 top sold out tours for 2008. Yet AC/DC has a 4th grade website and doesn't collect emails. Ditto for the Police Reunion tour and their poor excuse for a website. Ditto for Springsteen. [Edited 10/22/09 1:40am] © iwonderu007

Reznor prefers free milk, just look at his new financée (blow job photos everywhere). ok, #1, the fiancee crack was cheap, not to mention irrelevant. #2, trent's whole point in offering music for free is that he's working within the reality that if he doesn't dangle the carrot of free music to his fans, they're just going to go off and get the music for free from a torrent site anyway. so he lures in the fans with the free downloads, and then says "hey, by the way, if you want to fork over $14 bucks you'll get the free download NOW, plus we'll mail you a CD...or if you're a REAL fan, you can fork over $50 and we'll send you a fancy vinyl version with posters and goodies and you'll still get your free music now...or..." And everyone wins. Trent gets the traffic redirected to him that would have gone to the file sharing sites. He gets the contact info from all those people to promote future projects. He gets the sales from all the deluxe packages of his albums. The fans get free music, or if they want to pay for it, they get the fancy collector packages. Everyone's happy. MEANWHILE, take a look at the poll on the front page of this site. Does that look like the response of a happy fan base to you? Trent's not about giving the milk away for free. What he IS into is attracting more flies with honey than with vinegar. He's not suing fans for posting his videos on YouTube. Instead, he's posting better quality videos of his own work on YouTube than even his former record company has posted! He's posting better content on YouTube than his fans could possibly get their hands on. A-duh? NIN's albums may or may not be better or worse than Prince's recent output. I have no stake in that argument. I happen to like both artists. I think Prince used to think about using the internet as a marketing tool back in the day, and I think Prince used to find inspiration and possibilities in building NPGMC. I think it's safe to say Prince does not have that interest anymore. LotusFlow3r.com was half-hearted. It felt like something he was obligated to do. He wasn't behind it, and it was abandoned after a month or so. Meanwhile, Trent is doing now with the internet what Prince was doing in the peak of the NPGMC era, only he's taking that ball and running with it. As someone who uses the internet as a marketing tool, do I think Trent is "better" than Prince? You better believe it. That doesn't mean I think he's a "better" artist. That just means he's a far more savvy snake oil salesman. There's a reason Trent recently won the Webby that had typically been reserved for Prince in years past. And I'm not trying to slam on Prince in saying all this, because quite frankly, I don't think Prince even CARES. I think he's over the internet. I don't think he's made a big secret of that fact.

As for the web being a marketing tool, yes, but why spend time & energy when Prince could go on any MAJOR TV program for marketing and get a much larger audience. Oh, and Reznor won the Webby this year because David Bowie was one of the judges. duh. So??? Bowie's gone on record several times in the past as admiring NPGMC. Bowie and Prince were the two big pioneers in using the internet to market music in the first place. The bottom line is, you're a Prince loyalist and you can't bear to think of anyone doing anything to surpass what Prince has done. We get it. Your loyalty badge is in the mail along with your LotusFlow3r.com t-shirt. But is it criticizing Prince to say that someone else is doing something better than him when he quite openly doesn't give a damn about being in that particular race?

IT'S ALL OVER THE INTERNET - plus she was tweeting about her orgasms, bashing fans, call people old and fat! Prince would shut that shit down in half a second. He would never be associated with that kind of cheap thrill. Everyone is talking about Reznor abrupt behavior with this cheap woman. Some fans even found a porno she was in. Prince has been outlandish but NEVER cheap and crazy.

Bwahahaha. Keep dreaming. Also, get a calculator. Prince's infamous $100 WB deal required each album to sell 5+ million copies. Guess how many post-Purple Rain albums did that? NONE -- except Diamonds & Pearls for which he toured his ass off and wrote a bunch of songs explicitly aimed at the charts. © Bart Van Hemelen
