MIT Review of Lotusflow3r

I thought I would throw anonymity out of the window so as to share this with you - my review of Lotusflow3r for MIT's The Tech newspaper, publication of which was long overdue.

3 notes:
. The silly first sentence of the article was added at the insistence of my editors. My own copy started with 'Forget..'
. I had 5 CD-set for the Crystal Ball album, but my editors changed it to 4 after checking a Rolling Stones article. This is a timely topic as there is a thread right now about this in P Music & more.
. Some things might seem obvious to the fans/hardocre fans but I've tried to write it for as large an audience as possible, including the non-initiated.

Enjoy!

Nice article. And now you can write-off the cost of your Lotusflow3r subscription.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Thanks for your note. As for the cost of my subscription, I personally don't really care how much it is. As you will see from my posts here, I'm one of the few people who did not complain about the price because essentially for me it makes no difference, and also because I think these things such as costs/the value we put on creative production is very relative - for some $77 is a major expense, for others it's barely noticeable. I've tried to convey that in my story, following a neutral line, with no comments/judgments on the annual fee - I just state it.

I'm just back from the 5th Anniversary of a nightclub here in Boston, which I am covering too, and for which I bought a ticket. The last time, I paid $42 for the same type of event that I was also writing about, and in either case it didn't enter my mind to ask for a refund, can't be bothered.

So no, Prince won't get me with free stuff. Free things, like free food and other discounts, is an infringement on my freedom.

Thank you shellyann, glad you enjoyed it. Recreating in full the magical day and night of the launch was actually my initial plan, I even had some quotes from Orgers on developments, but editorial demands led to significant cuts.

As for purple love towards MIT - he is certainly welcome to visit! The MIT Media Lab is doing some really cool research on high-tech instruments and other music-related innovation.

Flo,
Thank you for providing the links. I am thrilled with these new discoveries and project creations by these obviously bright and creative students.I particularly enjoyed what one student is doing with the electronic "acoustic guitar!" How amazing! Are you a music student at MIT?

Glad to hear it's useful! I actually took a class with Pattie Maes this past semester but not music-related. She is the one developing all these cool innovative guitars.

And no, I'm not a music student - we have three professional musicians in the family [all classical], but I'm the only one who can't play anything. I went to ballet school instead!

Yes! The Rumor's 5th year anniversary. I think Venu celebrated its 10th year earlier this spring.
33 - is that also part of Space Entertainment? Oh wow, small world:) I certainly would love to pop in one of these weekends - if there's no breaking news to cover for The Tech!..

Very good article and enjoyable read.
Well, this is the confirmation that Prince is thinking about himself at 360 degrees right now and we're all aware of that.
May be annoying, frustrating at times. Let's just wait and see what comes next.

Thank you for your appreciative words, I did strive to make it 'flo' nicely:)

As for Prince thinking about himself 24/7/360, well... the Western world does live in a 'Me' moment, doesn't it?.. wink

Flo6,
I thoroughly enjoyed your article; you have an uncanny ability to piece together concepts, and make them clear! In particular, I loved how you used McLuhan’s Global Village, and made it your own and more relevant with the term “digital.” Furthermore, the digital divide, while difficult for most of us to conceptualize, is noted this week in particular when 700,000 calls were made when Television reception “disappeared”! Iran’s ability to eliminate internet access on command is confirmation alone! Thank you for providing this article. I seriously would enjoy reading any other articles you have or will write in the future. If it is not too much trouble, please orgnote me any additional links. Well done!

Dear Lotus2unfid, that's very nice of you to say.
I'm glad you enjoyed the article.
As for the Media Lab - should it be possible for you, you should visit it one day. It's a fun place!

Oops, I had missed your second note and am seeing your request only now.
It's always inspiring to receive positive feedback, thank you!
As for my other articles, there are quite a few:) so yes, a search for my name would be best - the most recent ones are at http://tech.mit.edu/
Right now I'm struggling through an opinion piece on Obama's Middle East policy for the next issue. Stay tuned!
And very true what you wrote about Iran. My editors actually asked me to write an oped on Iran's election, but in the end they decided to ask an Iranian student to do it.

May I ask, are you a journalist/writer yourself?..
Just curious!
