This is a cross post from what I just wrote on another
thread about disc 3.

***

Well, as a Prince fan, I'm still having quite a hard time
with disc 3.

I like "Joy In Repetition", which is awsome, and "Dorothy"
and "Peach" are very cool. Esp the piano/keys on "Dorothy"
are excellent.

But the rest of the disc? I don't like it at all. Don't get
me wrong, the music is good, but when you think of all the
material out there that could have ended up on this

Dolphin
Beautiful Strange
Calhoun Sq
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
All The Critics Love You In N.Y.
Days Of Wild

Not 2 mention what the box set could have been like if he'd
had included portions of the european tour [empty room, and
whole lotta love, can anyone say NIGHTTOWN "Bambi"?] :p

it is just beyond me why the Clinton and Musique songs were
included. Ok, it is part of the aftershow vibe and they
do give a nice performance but it just takes the flow out
of the disc completely. It stops right after "Joy" and
doesn't start up again until "Peach".

The only thing I can do with this is cut it up, insert my
own bootleg killer guitar jams from other shows in it and
mix it all together again. The way it is now, I know that
I won't play it many times.

To cut a very long, nay saying story quite short, no I
would not even consider letting anybody else listen to
this disc.

I don't understand why you don't like "We do this".
There could have been a lot of great other performances on there, but they aren't.
What is on there, is fantastic.

I think Prince did a very good job picking these songs to put on the aftershow disc. Sure he could've put Dolphin, Calhoun Square or Beautiful Strange on it, like he played at the aftershow in Nighttown, but I think he really wanted to capture the funkjam vibe that's going on at an aftershow and can only surface a little bit during a 'regular' concert.

Just fast forward and listen to 3.29 from We Do This, 5.31 from Nigs United 4 West Compton, 5.24 from Peach, 3.36 from Dorothy Parker, the intro from Girls & Boys and especially that phat bass sound in the same song, that is so low that without good speakers, you'll probably don't even hear it!

To sum up, this is THE MOST FONKIEST CD ever! But hey, if you're not into that, your loss...

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't like the George Clinton cut. Sure his voice is all fucked up...but that's George right? Prince's guitar on that song is worth it alone!

Gotta agree with you on that one. I still think that the
song itself is pretty messy and George sounds very strange
but the guitar is phenomenal, yes.

George sounds like he had alot of smoke inhaled the last 40 years or so...I never got his voice, is this the same guy who was on We Can Funk (CD version, GB) What part is George and what part is Prince ...sounds like prince all over to me. Any comments??
I got a ticket for the last show of the euro ONA tour! wink

To be honest, I don't understand why so many people love the new Dolphin sooo much. It's quite good, I think so too, but to me simply not that great. Calhoun Sq and Beautiful Strange would be cool for sure, but Dolphin not necessarily.

I think these jams do not make sense to me as they are mixed & edited to give the impression of a one night show !!
It would have been better to include real songs like "Beautiful Strange", "Calhoun Square" or "Paisley Park". And if he wants us to get his jamming ability, so he got to release an entire full aftershow !! like the one in NY or even one played in Europe (i know the Cd was made when he came to Europe).

No disrespect or hatin' meant towards Prince. That said, this Disc 3 is so..so to ME. I fade in and out as I listen to it. One of them blistering solos kick in and I'm there. Solo over w/ and I start drifting away until the next solo.

I agree w/ what someone said earlier, I would really enjoy this Disc if I were seeing it being played. Other then the solo's, it hard for me to envision what Prince and the Band are doing in relation to the music I'm hearing.

Like when I'm there and I see him raise his hand to the band, and they respond. Listening to this Disc, I don't know if a change came about just because or because Prince called it. His AFTERSHOWS showcase his ability and how tight he and the band vibe together. Here LISTENING to the AFTERSHOW Disc just ain't the same sensation for me.

HOWEVER, I rather have this Disc and be missing out on the visual, then to not have it and be missing out on EVERYTHING. THAT is for sure. So THANK you Prince for putting it out here allowing me my opinion on it.

Peace in the Middle East

I haven't listen to this Disc in the car out driving yet. My view may change once I've done that. Listening to NPS on a long road trip changed my view on that CD entirely. Since; I listen to it at home/in the car, it doesn't matter...that CD rocks!!! Houston bound for the holiday, Disc 3 will definately get some air time.
