Beastie Boys show Prince how it should be done

http://paulsboutique.beastieboys.com/
http://checkyourhead.beastieboys.com/

Last time I checked the Beastie Boys were still tied to some "evil" major label record contract, so let's see how limited they are when it comes to their website(s):
- affordable downloads in multiple packages
- free videos (including a performance @ Arsenio,...)
- free pictures
- no subscription fee to just enter the site
- online player so you can preview the music before buying it
- a news section (that's publicly visible)
- a tour section which doesn't just contain tour info, but also a tour diary
- interaction with fans (adding your pic to a collage, putting your pic on a world map)
- online mixer
- Facebook integration

Oh, and you can buy remastered versions of two of their classic albums, and they've even provided commentary tracks (!) for those.

I bought the Remastered Paul's Boutique and downloaded the commentary, which was a really nice touch. I didn't know that Check Your Head was getting the redux, too. I'll have to get it.

Prince created a huge, wet web-fart. We knew he would. What are we going to do? He's so caught up in his own image (which he's nursed at our teet for 25+ years) that the music and fan-friendliness has been replaced with pomp and circumstance.

I'm a Prince fan. A fan of the music. I've learned to roll with the Purple Punches. If I didn't have an interest in music by so many other artists, I'd probably be more upset at these waning years of the Paisley empire. And so it goes...

I do really like the Lotusflow3r disc. Best since One Nite Alone Piano as far as I'm concerned.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Interesting. Thanks for reporting.

They also ship outside of the USA?
I.e.: to the terrorist nations around them?

Well, just tried.
Works great!
Safe CC transmission, familiar site concept (store part, looks like W&L's...), smooth operation. And they even ship to Europe!

One problem: After the deal my FF crashes. Workaround: restart FF.

The one thing that's definetly missing from the Lotusflow3r site is that turntable on the bottom right.

I was cuttin' and scratchin' like Hurricane on that mutha.

Yeah, too bad they didn't release a 3CD set for $11.98 spotlighting 3 different styles of music, play 3 nights on Leno, play 3 shows in one day in L.A, release a new album pretty much every year of their careers, play an outstanding SuperBowl halftime show, kick everybody's asses when they were inducted into the rock-n-roll hall of fame, sell out 21 nights at the O2, launch the careers of Sheila E., Wendy & Lisa, write songs for music legends such as Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples, Patti LaBelle, give their last CD away free, include another in the price of concert tickets, write 'Still Would Stand All Time', look incredible doing all these things, etc.

Aside from the aforementioned (and a couple hundred other examples I'm not coming up with at the moment), though, they certainly showed him how it's done.

this thread is about how the beasties have created a valuable online, interactive connection with their fans. get off your little soap box and re-read the first post. your post above mentions nothing of love4oneanother.com, npgmc or 3121 or lotosflow3r.com.

I'm not on a soapbox, and I'm certainly critical of Prince, but to keep comparing him to artist after artist based soley on their websites is just silly at this point.

So he sucks at the web. We get it.
If anyone is on a soapbox, it's the originator of these numerous threads.

`How is's done` referred to the website/merchandise business side of things.
Now that you know: what do you think about that?

Since I don't care about their website/merchandise, I don't think about it at all really.
Unless someone starts a thread about it, that is.

I'm sure there are more expensive sites than lotusflow3r out there, I'm sure there are sites that provide less content even.
Why not start threads about all those, if it's really just about comparison of website content and such?

I'm not interested in getting mired down in this discussion any further really, because it's obvious no ones mind will be changed by either side, so enjoy the beasties site and have a wonderful day!

And yet, there continues to be fluff pieces like the recent on on Variety.com sucking on Prince's cock while declaring him the Al Gore of the internets when it comes to Musicians. Since Prince.org is practically the only Prince "community" left standing, it's been insinuated that he surfs here. Maybe he'll take a moment and read a couple of Bart's posts to "see how's it's done".

Nah...
[Edited 4/21/09 15:24pm]
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.
