this is the problem i'm having with the site right now.

i think it's meant to be enjoyed as a kind of online art installation which features a retrospective of prince pics and videos, and it's not really meant to be a source for exclusive information or a tool for communication or discussion.

Which, okay, might be really cool if you're a casual fan who hasn't seen or heard a lot of Prince stuff and is curious to dig a little deeper.

But casual fans don't pay $77 to join an artist's official site.

Diehard fans will pay $77, but diehard fans have already seen all the content posted to the site a kajillion times.

What we're left with is a few pretty animations we can poke at with our cursors and that's about it. The album downloads were nice, but we can get those at Target for $12 now.

Where's the incentive for casual fans OR diehard fans? Who is this site catering to?

I posted this in another Thread,
I think this sum it up for me...
I hoped for RARE stuff..stuff that hardcore fans have NOT seen/heard.
Did I pay $77 dollars for a tee?

heard it this morning on Live365. biggrin

I don't think they know what us fans really mean by "vault music"...
They keep mentioning the Purple rain era...

Is Prince really willing to give his "vault" music up for $77? I really don't think so.....

I really wish Clay and Malzone could have had a peek or given some history on NPG MUSIC CLUB. I think the interactive cd rom would have even helped, even if it was just a little bit.

I know its a whole new experience and I really like the galaxy, but 99% of the music/videos on there I have already heard/seen. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy the dirty mind era, and the videos are sweet, but give me something GOLDEN smile

The "vault" is priceless... So what type of price tag is/will Prince put on the music we really want to hear?

so were they not PERMITTED to look at the old NPGMC site?

are they still not permitted to look at it, or to research it?

because now that the site is up and going, i think it would benefit them to see what was offered in the past.

heck, they should have been permitted to research the old sites before launching this one, but whadda i know?

I sooo agree.

I would gladly send them my old interactive cd rom, so they can get a feel of what kind of stuff we used to have to play/work with.

i'm not sure who will be interested in the vault stuff apart from the
people who signed up to his 77 dollar site right now.

if he ever decides to release some of that stuff, now is the time.

when else? another 10 years down the line when the general public is
even less interested?

beyond his hardcore audience of, say, 150,000 world wide, no one else
is interested in 30 yr old obscure vault song, no matter if they were
once intended for purple rain or 1999.

people need to stop this make believe that the vault content is worth
it's weight in gold. it isn't. it'll be a very much anticipated thing
for everyone who is STILL a fan after all these years. but beyond us,
there aren't that many people pining for it.

after his all time low fanbase during 1997-2000 he did his very best
to get back in the spotlight from 2001-2007. he's promoting his new
project very well and he's gotten quite a few new fans.

if that's what he wanted, to play the media game for a while to get
a bigger fanbase and more support for his new/future indi releases,
he's done well.

but he's not gonna get anymore fans at this point imo. he got more
people into the bandwagen and he should just release that stuff now
because if he doesn't release it now, he never will.

I didn't get the impression that they were banned from looking. They said Prince didn't have any of the old stuff, said he'd binned it. Or words to that effect.

For what it's worth, I hated the version of the NPGMC with the different rooms, the scaling effects gave me motion sickness!

I expect the usual.

Nothing major, until the negative swell will grow to a point where more and more fans want a refund, so he'll throw a bone and everyone will shut up for while.

Then, a few months later, the swell will grow again, so Prince will sneek out a bone in the form of a track that basically slags off his fans for wanting more.

The fams will proclaim "he showed you all"!

Then, a month before renewal, they give away a bit more away, and plenty false promise, to sucker you in to sign up again...

Then repeat..... biggrin

As a 25 year die hard, still loving the new albums, I'm still shocked that I bailed on joining this year, but I'm glad I did. Its far less stressful, and my album has Crimson and clover on it! lol

If it were me, i would release one to three live albums through the year. available in audio & video. Also, one to three discs of old studio work. While all that is going on, id tour, have live streams of shows or have tracks, one or two from the show up on the site the next day for us to hear or view. Then new album and do it over and over again smile

even if prince binned it, aren't there archive resources on the web that will allow you to pull up old sites? i know there's a tool that will show you what the .org used to look like in the black and purple layout days. couldn't it access old NPGMC pages? that's more what i'm talking about.

and i don't necessarily think they need to look at the way the old sites were laid out. i'm talking more about the kind of content and options the older sites offered. the newsfeeds, the forums, the kinds of music files and videos, etc. conceptually, i think the current site is just groovy. i like the galactic/"planets" theme.

I can rarely even be bothered to wade my way through the site to look for "updates", I would rather hot-foot-it over to the org to get all the lastest news.
Why can't he just have a normal website for crying out loud! cool

I absolutely agree that the current site is NOT about the die hard fans, and yet we were all too ready to hand over the cash! i kind of feel duped!
I guess only time will tell if there is anything there for us really.
