Old School Prince fan who's totally pissed off with the new Prince

I just have to elaborate on my last post here. I really don't understand this guy's concept for the new website or even his current thought processes. I've never - in all the years of graphic design and website building - seen a website so hastily thrown together. Don't get me wrong now, I have been a BIG Prince fan since "'79. He was actually the reason that I have the attitude and personality that I have now. I deeply admired the man and his music. That all ended after the release of Musicology. It seems as if the dude was on a narcissistic/arrogant high. There were day s when I anxiously awaited new Prince releases and I was very satisfied with those releases because there was not one track on anything before Musicology that I didn't like. Then he threatens to sue the very people who put him in the position he's in now. Can someone please explain to me why this is or was? I have deep respect for the man and his music and I haven't had a chance to listen to the new stuff yet but I will. To sum this all up, I'd just like to say that today's Prince is not yesterdays Prince. He's become more arrogant, self-centered and uncaring. Think about your fans dude. We are the ones who've boosted your ego throughout all these years. I for one will NOT pay $77 to enter a site. I compare that to paying for something before you even get to look at it.
My advice to Prince: DON'T CHARGE YOUR FANS TO GET INTO YOUR NEW SITE.
FIRE THE WEB DESIGNER THAT CREATED THAT SHADE-TREE SITE
GIVE MA AN ALBUM THAT I CAN PLAY FROM START TO FINISH AND BE SATISFIED WITH EVERY TRACK.
COME BACK DOWN TO EARTH AND STOP BEING SO ARROGANT AND GREEDY.

You took the words right out of my head. I've been a fan since 1978 / 79.
A ticket fell in my lap for the first (Nokia) show last night.Seeing all the tours from Dirty Mind thru Purple Rain and many, many more after, those were "PRINCE" concerts!!! He gave his all. Last night, I COULD NOT WAIT TILL it was over. He encored with Jungle Love and The Bird!! I was done. I walked out on a Prince concert!! My Prince collection is sick.He inspired me through his music to do and be what I am today. The prince today is NOT the same person as yesterday's Prince. I wonder if new / young fans are insipred??

VERY well said!!! Not really sure who he thinks he is but I too refuse to plunk down $77 for a fan site. I would have thought that if he was the one behind offering his new CD for an affordable price of $12 in the midst of a recession than why not membership fee's too?? Many people like myself have been laid off and losing all we work so hard for and the very last thing we have money for right now is a fan site let alone a CD. His style through the years has drastically changed and Im sorry to say too that I keep longing for him to hit the charts once again with a number one single. Maybe if he did put his pride and arrogance aside for a moment maybe he could collabrate with a great producer to hit him back in the charts. I finf myself too with his latest albums hitting the next track button even though I so badly just want to sit and love the entire album.

On another thread WaterInYourBath made a very vaild point about Prince's music. It could also apply to live performances not connecting with you in the same way as they used to. Nostalgia is a funny thing, we look at the past and sometimes expect those feelings we once got from a certain piece of art to stay frozen in time when, in reality, your perception changes, as does your memory of that perception, as does the artist who orginally gave you that feeling. That's why we have fanboy tantrums about everything from Star Wars prequels and special editions to new Stephen King novels to new Prince music...

I can definitely understand dissent, especially if the statements are levelheaded and logical. However, in this case, I feel your expectations are a bit too high. Do U ever wonder how it must feel, after composing thousands of individual songs for 30 years, to actually have to sit and try to create more? He could easily stop his career as a musician right now, and unlike many, have a completely consummate musical history. Realistically, after mastering nearly every genre, what is left for Prince to do at this point? Though he's ardent enough to continue so he can still perform live, I can imagine the songwriting process must be quite laborious for him now and ideas may be scarce. No matter how young he looks, that musical senescence comes with growing older as a human. That's why majority of his current work is still impressive to me, since I'm honestly shocked he can still conceive compositions at all at this stage in his life (although some songs may sound slightly unoriginal).

When I hear a new Prince song like "Dreamer" now, and I like the arrangement, rhythm, melody, whatever, I really don't pay attention to its "tiredness" because at this point ultimately all of his new songs have the potential to sound "old" or recycled. That happens to almost all older accomplished songwriters (such as Smokey Robinson, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, etc). While I don't like triteness in his music (like in "...Another Like Me), I don't mind oldness since it may be impossible now for him to be "new.".
Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

In the past, Prince has always exceeded my expectations, with his own music and productions of associated artists. My problem is my expectations are TOO HIGH.
If I lower them, will I like (post 1995) Prince?
I'm not a hater, I just don't know what I want from him anymore.
Maybe it's time for me to throw in the Purple Towel. neutral

This site hasn't even been up for a week. When it's been six months and there's still not anything to brag about for our $77, then I think there'll be more justification for outrage. Heck, when you subscribe to a magazine, you gotta wait 4 to 6 weeks to get your first issue. I have the patience to wait and see what I'm gonna get in the big picture - despite all the glitches and frustrations from his sites over the years, I have to say that they've either paid for themselves in ticketmaster fees I didn't have to pay, or else I got a decent amount of exclusive music. Or both. But none of it was offered automatically on the first day the sites were launched. I'm willing to wait a while before I pass judgment...

Yes, but he's had quite a while now BEFORE the live date to have a LOT of content be available on this site from day ONE!! If you're charging $77 in this economic day and time, there really should be a lot of great shit straight outta the gate to be had and not JUST a promise of it to come. And really that's what a lot of his shit/hype is...a promise. He supposedly had all of this video footage available since the 70s (and maybe still does), why not show everyone all the treasure that's there (or at least a lot of it) immediately by having it ready right away instead of relying on hypes and promises to get us in the door?? This whole "Ooooo, wait til later on in the year when things really get cookin'!" is just a hope or wish by the fans, nothing concrete.

And "video footage" implies performances, not music videos, cuz that ain't "footage" of shit! And, it sounds like, or I get the feeling that, most of this "footage" to be shown at some later date is stuff post-2000. And he knows the shit people REALLY want to see is unreleased footage from his heyday (from 1979 to about 1996 - give or take)!

This has been the same complaint about his web sites since day one, and I think any fan in the know should be fully aware by now that the "archival goldmine" tactic is a carrot that is dangled but never actually offered. Meanwhile, what IS offered are great opportunities for concert tickets and the occasional new track, random vault rarity, or whatever is lying around that Prince thinks we want to see or hear. For those reasons, and because I happened to have an extra $77 floating around last week, I had no problem joining the new site. If he finally caves and offers an archival wonderland this year, then awesome.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I agree here too. Prince seems to be always telling his fans or even promising that things are coming or going to released when he is constanly changing his mind. Even at times at the very last minute. He did have plenty of enough time since his last release to iron things out and to finally (or at least that what it seems) give the fans what they want and stop being so recluse. Lets face it, Prince would be just another person like U and me but its because of his fans that make him. The fans are his bread and butter. And than to tell us on his site that the album was coming in January when it wasnt actually till almost April? Guess he's playing the game with us.
