Lotusflow3r project next SOTT?

Watching U2 on David Letterman last night I was reminded of the Grammy they beat him out of back in the "good old days." Do you also compare his releases/eras as I am guilty of doing? If yes cite an example or three. I'll start with:

SOTT vs U2 = Lotusflow3r vs U2

The Joshua Tree was a great album... No Line on the Horizon is really good too. I just hope Lotusflow3r is better... I would love to see Prince take Album Of The Year @ next years Grammy awards biggrin

u2 are without a doubt the worse band in all existance. their music is winney, moaney and has no melody. why would you even consider compairing them to prince.

If you compare album outputs over the past decade, stacking up anything from Pop, All That You Can't Leave Behind, Dismantle or Horizon against... Musicology, Planet Earth, 3121, Rainbow Children...

It's not even close. In the studio over the past decade, U2 far and away outstrips Prince, despite some amazing tracks that P has made during that period. But he hasn't put out a single, wholly satisfying album during that entire stretch. U2 is 4 for 4.

(And this is coming from someone who prefers Prince to U2 by a few hairs)

Do you like the new one? It's boring the heck out of me so far.

The new U2 album has it's moments but it's not really grabbing me. There's not one song on it I love and at times it's really rather drab.

Much preferred How to Dismantle.

I've given it 5 listens now since Sunday, I'll givie it a few more but I can't believe what great reveiws it got, for me it's probably going to be my least favorite album by U2.

I already know Lotus Will be Better album, but not get the critical alcaim No Line gets.

No, no... the reddish brown one.
Bob George

My intent is not a comparison of Prince and U2, but rather Prince "now" versus Prince "then." SOTT was up against the U2 project back in '86 and subsequently lost the Grammy nod to them...

i suppose. i just don't think Grammys are a good indication of what’s a good album. they just reflect the times, what the mainstream like. u2 do so well internationally because they are the type of bland rock that American audiences like. that is why cold play have done so well in the US. and they undeservingly won an awful lot of Grammys this year.

i don't really think it is an exaggeration. there is no melody to any of their songs. they have forged a career on being political in the blandest way possible.

i do not agree, where-as prince's modern output it is not as raw as it used to be. if you miss the few generic rnb tracks he has, most of it is really good, they're certainly not boring. u2's music is dull. it has no musician-ship (the edge tremolo picks three notes on reverb continually in most u2 songs).

this guy (bill bailey) describes my point far more eloquently than i can:
http://www.youtube.com/wa...EDuK46ZqFM

the only thing they do in any of their new output it just be political. that is boring. and died when prog rock did.

I thought U2 was a type of iPod, so they're a band as well?

They are derivative, mainstream media whores. The only band more mundane is Coldplay.

You are exactly right. To describe Camille as a protege is something I've never heard before. confused

I really do think that comparisons to SOTT are not wise. That double album was unique in so many ways (including how the final configuration came about). Prince is in a different place now. When the 3 disc set comes out it would be nice if we could enjoy it or detest it on it's own merits/failings

The original poster was merely pointing out a similarity to 1987 in that U2 and Prince have albums out at the same time, and U2 might get best album, and Prince would not.
Just somewhere in the middle,

Protege (Camille)? falloff Camille was not a protege! Prince WAS Camille!

The cynic in me expects more of a new "NewPowerPack" rather than a new SOTT. Come on guys, SOTT was 22 years ago! Those days are gone.

And U2 are a great fucking band. Jethrouk, you speak shit.

In 1981 when Prince was realizing his vision of "American Idol" he created an alterego named Jamie Starr (among others) that was credited with The Time and Vanity 6 projects. Now we insist on calling those seperate from Prince where in reality the part that these artists played in the actual album was picture on an album and vocals. Yes, The Time turned out to hugely talented in their own rights and the rest is history... but I digress, whatever we choose to call the associates that helped faciliate Prince putting more music on the scene lets group a few albums

1980 Dirty Mind
1981 Controversy
1980 The Time

1982 1999
1982 What Time Is It?
1983 Vanity 6

...

2009 Lotusflow3r
2009 MPLSound
2009 Elixer

Prince has for most of his career utilized various ways to put tons of stuff out in one year. I'm sure he struggles with the idea of how to bring his music to us because markets can be fickle... On an almost yearly basis since Prince has been an artist there have been more than a single album worth of marterial, and he wants those songs to live too. "Party Up" is a marvelous song, but should "Cool" and "Jack U Off" die because there isn't room to put them on a disc in the conventional sense? No. Take a look at his body of work and you'll see that he has relied on thinking out of the box -- and I for one appreciate those side projects immensely. I'm thinking of how the Jill Jones music so beatifully dove-tailed with the Parade music... check it out.

To the question of my calling "Camille" a protege. Camille was originally concieved as a non-Prince project... but for contractual reasons he couldn't do that project and it was shelved. "Dream Factory" was also killed against Prince's wishes I'm sure and as a result we got "Sign O' The Times." Can you imagine how cool that would've been to get those two projects when they were concieved and completed?

But to reiterate my original question...

For You
Prince
Dirty Mind
Controversy
1999
Purple Rain
Around The World In A Day
Parade
Sign "O" The Times

...

Lotusflow3r
Indigo Nights
Planet Earth
3121
Musicology
N.E.W.S
Xpectation
One Nite Alone...
Rainbow Children

Now the above two listings are purely from my spotty memory but essentially since his rebirth as Prince in about Y2K Prince has put out about nine albums, and the SOTT project was about nine albums into this experience we call Prince.

Prince was Camille (laugh)... next you gonna be tellin' me that Jamie Starr is a thief!

Peace
