Did anybody join the Controversy Fan Club in the early 1990's. What was it like?

I subscribed to the Controversy Fanzine...Great Pics...Lots of review that killed me cause he was not touring the USA and little tiny print. It was a great mag and I was sad when they stopped publishing it!

I subscribed to it & enjoyed it a lot but Uptown is definitely the better fan mag.
Lot of great pictures in Controversy though.

I subscribed and enjoyed reading it. There were Beautiful pictures of Prince from the Lovesexy and Batman era. Good information on Prince and tours. I haven't looked at them for awhile. But I was sad to see them go. It was a good Fanzine.

I subscribed to it, and I knew Eileen Murton, the woman who ran it. It was great for European based fans, because not only did you get an excellent mag (which was also on sale in record stores in the UK), but also there was a phone number you could call which had a regularly updated recorded message telling you what the latest Prince news was. Also, Eileen used to sort out priority booking for UK gigs for the members, and there were many a time I had front row centre tickets for gigs thanks to Eileen. She was great, and worked really hard to establish communications between Prince and the fans, at a time when Prince was at his most elusive.

I also know the reason Eileen shut it down. Let's just say that Prince's organisation never gave her the appreciation she deserved, and ended up using and abusing her and the fan club's members.

Yeahhh.. Controversy was tasty energy and pre-electric internet org excitement. The Conventions they had in MN were fantastic and built a very large "international community" back in the day when his empire was shining from mega-stardom.

I would say that Eileen is up there in the top-10 people that Prince Owes (with a big O) a great deal of thanks2 throughout his career. U wouldn't believe how much work went into the Controversy network, the positive editing of revealing and thought provoking composition of all the energy that was bouncing off the walls during that elusive era.

I think its a shame he couldn't cooperate with a publicist or webmaster who could put half the successful effort that Eileen put into the entire project.

"Controversy" ruled back in the day in the UK.

Thanks to Eileen, I had the opportunity of seeing Prince at an aftershow - a night I will never forget.

It was so sad when it all came to an end...
