NPGMC WMA DRM files - missing license

Hey,

Just reinstalled my PC and it turns out that WMP10 will not play 5 of my purchased tracks from NPGMC. WMP10 is trying to connect to the licens server but it seems they took that down along with the NPGMC.

I did back up most of my c: drive before the reinstall. It is possible to find the licens files somewhere on the on cconfused

Obviously the licens was not part of the auto-backup that WMP10 performed.

I sent email to drm support @ npgmc but they don't answer the emails. Just the standard email saying they will get back to me - but nothing happens.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated

Well hopefully you backed up your licenses beforehand. most people have this set as the default, so you may have done so without realizing it. just have to navigate to the directory on ur backed up c drive that stored ur licenses by doing the steps below.

1. Click the access application menu
2. click tools
3. choose manage licenses
4. click change and choose where your backup licenses are stored
5. then click restore

Hmm nope the backup I had originally let me play two albums I purchased. And some of the singles. For some reason 6 or 7 tracks did not have the licens.

Then I tried to follow a MS KB article on how to fix licenses.
The end result is that now I'm unable to play any of the files.

I've now spend a few hours on this and decided that the lesson learned is to not by DRM protected music.

It would have been nice if NGPMC would keep the licens server running and not just shot down everything during the summer with a short email.

I agree with you. I, unfortunately lost all my music too. It is a sticky situation. The article you read should have given you steps to restore back to the original settings (before you tried the fix). I wish I had known you were reading that article, because I always recommend to people that they not try to edit their registry themselves if they don't have experience.

People have been trying to crack DRM 2 for years now and have had little luck. The only way anyone was able to do it, required you to already have a license, and to downgrade to Windows Media Player 9. I tried to follow the instructions on how to do this and it totally screwed up my Windows Media Player to the point where it wouldn't play any DRM protected files. I had to completely reformat to get it working again.

It's been discussed on here before that you needed to burn them to CD to remove the DRM. Otherwise if anything happened to your computer such as having to reformat, you're kinda screwed.

There is also a program called Tunebite that will reencode DRM protected audio and video files. You still need to have a working license, but if you don't want to be bothered burning it to a CD then re-ripping it to your computer, this is another option.
