Prince Abruptly Closes Official Web Site
Posted Jul 11th 2006 5:34PM by TMZ Staff

Prince's official Web site, NPGMusicClub.com, closed suddenly last week with no advanced notice. The club simply sent around an email that said, in part, they decided to "put the club on hiatus until further notice."

The announcement went on to say, "In its current [form] there is a feeling that the NPGMC gone as far as it can go." It ended, "The future holds nothing but endless opportunity and we plan on seizing it wholeheartedly. Don't u want 2 come?"

In a possibly related story, Prince filed for a trademark on the mark "NPG Music Club" last year. An opposition was filed against that claim by HM Publishers Holding Limited, which owns the Nature Publishing Group, or NPG. The opposition was filed on the same day that NPGMusicClub.com was put on "hiatus."
An attorney for Prince's company, Paisley Park Enterprises, told TMZ that the two incidents were not related, to the best of his knowledge, and that the "opposition will be resolved shortly."

Prince has been one of the pioneers of music on the Internet. He was the first major artist to release an entire album -- 1997's "Crystal Ball" -- exclusively on the Web. The NPG Music Club had boasted several full-length CDs of music that were unavailable anywhere else.

He was honored last month with a Webby Lifetime Achievement Award. "Besides being a musical genius, Prince is a visionary who recognized early on that the web would completely change how we experience music," said Tiffany Shlain, founder of The Webby Awards. "For more than a decade, he has tapped the power of the Web to forge a deeper connection with his fans and push the boundaries of technology and art."

Yes, it more than likely is the reason, because according 2 the above letter sent 2 the lawyers representing Prince and PPE, the "NPG" more than likely cannot b used until the very least August 2, 2007 - when all testimony and Discovery must b submitted. I seriously doubt that it would b that soon as they would have 2 await a judgement from the governing committee.

I am wondering, if "we" as the members of The "NPG" can throw some salt into Nature's game, in the 4m of a class action suit, if 4 nothing else, 2 tie their hands up as they have tied Prince's hands.

They have, by their lawsuit, infringed upon r memberships, causing undo stress 2 many members, loss of friendships, loss of access 2 music and merchandise and perks that as NPG members, we are entitled too.

I am serious, I don't expect it 2 go anywhere, but nothing will choke a lawsuit like another lawsuit? Get me... Prince/prince has been calling fam NPG since the early 90's - we can claim that as a "community" HM is causing harm.

So, is this possible? Or am I just evil? lol lol lol

Oh and U're welcome on thanks 4 my research... Cool

hey synergy

i'm sure you're trying to help, but honestly, this class action thing would at best be a fruitless waste of money, and at worst would be vexatious litigation, and you don't want to hit with a big ass bill on your doorstep for that.
wink
But Marge! What if we chose the wrong religion? Each week we just make God madder and madder.

Awwwww comfort lol

You know, at first I was kinda put off by the whole Karma angle in this thread and then I got to thinkin this is exactly what Prince deserves for being such a jackass in the 90s and suing his fans who's only crime was being devoted fans. So many of the fans he went after only had lyrics on their site and pictures in honor of their favorite musician and he acted like a total nutball and a giant jerk. Yup, what comes around goes around evillol

Thanks!! smile
I hate to be a petty "na na na na na" kinda person, but it is a type of poetic justice. Still it's so unfair to the fan community and I hate to see Prince hurt even if he brought it upon himself.
Now could ya rearrange the words in your response and add some mystic babble so that I can have one of those crazy ass cryptic quotes to decipher for myself??? lol smile biggrin

This is all going slightly crazy people. Calm down please.
Just to add some news to the ongoing discussion (and forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but there are 10 pages of bitterness here). Taken from the UK's CMU Daily newsletter:

NPG SHUTDOWN NOT DUE TO TRADEMARK
A legal representative of Prince has denied the NPG Music Club is on hold
because of a trademark legal dispute. As previously reported, Prince's award
winning online fan community went on hiatus earlier this month. This
followed a legal claim by British based HM Publishing Holdings that they
owned the NPG trademark for its science-book subsidiary the Nature
Publishing Group. But Princes' lawyer, David Schelzel, has told reporters
that those two events are not connected and that the singer already has
approval to use the NPG name from the US Patent and Trademark Office and
that therefore the trademark legal action against him is "minor". He told
the Star Tribune newspaper: "Prince's use of the NPG trademarks is no way in
jeopardy". Asked why the site had gone down, Schelzel said: "Wait and see"

As one said here b4, Prince is a visionary. Anybody remember the intro of the NPG's "Exodus" album with the operator saying "When it comes time 2 download your work into your fans' computers"...this is 1995 when no other artist or even most of the people knew that was gonna be the future of music's distribution, even the internet back then was in its firts steps...Ya'll have 2 give him some credit!

sorry guy but there is no evidence to support your assumption and ALL the evidence (as I told you before) says that is NOT the case. THERE IS NO LAWSUIT! just an objection to a TM filing.

It did not compell Prince to do anything with the Member areas of the site and the fact is he is still selling NPG merchandise on a site that is still marked with NPG all over it!

So if you and (any one else who can't wrap their mind around Prince shutting down on his own) want to keep believing that an UNRELATED TM appeal did - your choice.

But the facts of the matter - and now his lawyers - clearly show that it didn't.

nothing has been disproving...people are hear to debate their own theories..your free to agree to disagree but dont be coming here telling people how they should think or what discussions should be had here...

you are one of thousands or participants here on the org...sit back and enjoy yourself.

wave

OK... i gotta say that's rubbish

A)"nothing has been disproving..."
Really confused I would say that the following false statements have now been completely disproven (there were plenty more just can't be bothered):
but the thing is that whatever music would have,or has been published under the banner of "NPG" could b caput.

His hands, the NPGMC's hands were tied - they had 2 shut down on reciept of that letter

B) I wouldn't presume "to be coming here telling people how they should think" and did no such thing. I AM A BIG FAN OF INDIE THINKING 8) I believe that lots of OTHER people here have been telling people what to think based on wholly erroneous and unsupported theories.

is that a crime? No
is this a court of law? NO
should it have been made a sticky which gives it the endorsement of the ORG? IMO No (but then you knew that already wink )

C)" or [telling] what discussions should be had here..."
AGAIN, I did no such thing - what I DID do was point out to you early on that this thread was based on nothing but unsupported and illogical misinterpretations of the legal situation. based on that, I suggested that making it a sticky was a bad idea.

D) I AM sitting back, relaxed and having fun. from your ORIGINAL typing I might think that perhaps it is you who was a tad upset wink
but Your Modesty, since you are the boss here- you do what you feel like.

just don't hurl accusations at me unless you can back them up.

Hey guys, I don't know if this has already been posted, but glamslam.org sent this bulletin on myspace today:

Princes Web site shut down
Attorney says its not due to recent trademark lawsuit

Updated: 6:17 p.m. MT July 12, 2006
MINNEAPOLIS - Princes fan Web site has been shut down, but an attorney for the musician says its not related to a recent trademark lawsuit against the site, NPGMusicClub.com.

HM Publishing Holdings, a book company in England, filed the lawsuit on July 3 based on its own NPG, a science-book subsidiary called the Nature Publishing Group.

Princes attorney, David Schelzel, said Prince already has approval of the name from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and that the legal action is minor.

Princes use of the NPG or Paisley Park trademarks is no way in jeopardy, Schelzel said. When asked why the site was shut down, Schelzel told the Star Tribune Wait and see.

Last month, New Yorks RED Distribution announced a deal in which it will be the sole distributor of all of Princes NPG products. Soon after that, an e-mail was sent out to NPG members saying the site had entered a time of great reflection and restructuring.

The online club started around 2000, and it won Prince a Webby Award in June for being an Internet innovator.

In its current 4m (form), there is a feeling that the NPGMC has gone as far as it can go, the e-mail said. The future holds nothing but endless opportunity. Dont u want 2 come?

After taking some time to read the link that synergy provided, I feel that those of us who really care about Prince and NPG,NPGMC, WNPG and what ever else Prince has his hand in should send prayer up for the man. We dont know what is really going on and we will not know what is really going on until we hear something from Prince and his people. A person that is now into their religion will be attacked by unwanted and evil.
