Response to post in "U Tell Us" at NPGMC about "A Case of U"

First of all, I adore this song as well as the album it comes from.

As you probably know, this track was put up in the (I think) Reflection room at the NPGMC recently, and in a thread over there, NPGMC member "darladee" posted:

I just spent about an hour on A Case of You in the Reflection Room. If this is any example of what's on the One Night Alone Piano, I've got to have it. I, too, wish he would re-release this somehow but I'm just grateful that it was in Reflection and I got to hear it. His lyrics always strike as being thoughts that I would never couple together and then when I hear him sing them, I end up thinking, "OH Yeah, that's it. It's the perfect description". He never fails to create absolute beauty. Thank you once again Prince and the NPGMC for making this possible to hear.

I'm glad you at least got to hear this one track off of the album, darladee. It just doesn't seem right that you aren't able to listen to the whole thing, but it sure ain't up to me! wink

Just for the record though, "A Case of U" is a cover of "A Case of You," which is a Joni Mitchell song. I agree with you that the lyrics to that one are spine-tingling!!! "I'm a lonely painter, I live in a box of paints." I mean, IMO, you can stop there and already you have one of the most brilliant lyrics ever written! wink

Prince's version is slightly different than the original Joni Mitchell tune in that he skips the first verse and makes a couple other minor lyrical changes (i.e. "I used to be frightened by the devil" in Prince's version as opposed to "I'm frightened by the devil" in the original). Melodically, he really takes the song to a new level, if you ask me. I had never heard Joni's original version before this album came out in 2002, but since I've listened to it a bit, and just recently k.d. lang actually released another version of it on her latest album. Although they are both great in their own way, and the first verse has some really great lyrics in it too, it's impossible for me to not want to hear Prince's version right afterwards.

honestly, i think Prince's version is SO poor compared to the original, it hurts me.

Especially when i've heard him play prettier versions just on the guitar in concert.

I tend to skip the track on ONA (which i think is really a great CD in places).

That song belongs to Joni, it seems way too personal. Covering it is kinda like trying to put on someone elses underwear...
