I have a related question. How do the downloadable albums on the online music store work? What do I actually download? MP3s? What is it?

I'm not a member but I think that they're all copy-protected WMA files aren't they?

I've never had a good month where I've been ahead of my bills enough to justify joining.

Oh man, they suck. It's like these files that ONLY play through a Windows' player and the Windows thingie has to convert each song, one by one, and THEN you can burn them to a CD. Of course you can't use superior programs like Nero to make your CDs, because Prince is all in bed with corporate Micro$oft. There are NO lyrics provided and no covers to print out.

Prince is a prick when it comes to NPGMC and I will forever resent his stealing $25.00 from me (he claims it's a "donation" but I've never figured out what I was donating to). Take my word, there is NOTHING worth paying for at NPG. All you get for your $25.00, if you don't pay more, are some dated graphics. No free videos, no free music (okay, maybe 25% of two songs) and only a few free pics which you CAN'T save and have a big NPG watermark on them, just in case you're smart enough to use the "save screen" feature to save them.

It's a rip and Prince should be ashamed of himself for scamming his fans more than WB ever scammed him.

Luv & Peace,

Okay this is just not true. For starters Cyberclips is open and there are like 4 or 5 videos in there right now that are free. If you go into the reflection room there are about two to three songs in there that are updated every week or so. You can see exclusive pictures from the tour and there is a pretty cool forum area where you can find the latest Prince news and tv schedule.

Now as for the downloads. That's called business sense. If Prince is in bed with Micro Soft who could blame him. Prince is an independent business man so he has to make business deals. I am sure there are better download services but micro soft is his sponsor for this venue. I agree personally I like to use other things besides the windows media player when I can, but I aways keep an updated version of media player on my computer. There are more than a few sites that move people to one player or another.

Also dude its just 25$ and that site is more than worth that. You're acting like you paid 200$ to join and that is not the case. That 25$ is a lifetime memebership to the club. You have the oppourunity to buy tickets before everyone else and get some really good seats to a Prince concert. Plus you also can buy your aftershow tickets before everyone else that is not in the club and not have to wait in line or stay on the phone dialing and dialing.

NPGMC is more than worth 25$. I think that anyone who is a Prince fan and wants to get some of the downloads discounted and access to all the things I mentioned before should join up. I don't think you will find another fan site that offers as much for that low a price.

Peace

Sorry SammiJ,
I don't really know what that is all about (the promo #). However if you have a debit card that should be good enough to get you in the club. I think I used that to get in myself.

I paid $100 to join, in the year 2000. Add $250 for the ticket to the celebration (had to be a member to attend), that makes it $350 I paid to join.

Then I paid $25 to renew my subsription in 2001 and 2002, so that makes it $400 I've paid to the good ol' NPGMC. Now that it's a measly $25 buck for life... sloopydrew4u I think you're getting a good deal, especially when he rolls up to your town.

I do agree with you here. I am on a MAC, so I don't download any of these new songs... it's not worth it for a "preview." If they were MP3s, or a format I can burn to a CD using a MAC, then I would pay for it.

It's probably for a special Invite or something. Practically all of us have to Sign Up,
Give a Credit Card and pay the $25. I don't think there is any other way to become
a Member without using a Credit Card. I don't believe they take Money Orders.

Also, once you become a Member, as long as you don't have a Mac, you shouldn't
really have a huge problem with the Downloads. They work in Windows Media, Music
Match Jutebox, WinAMP, just to name a few.

Someone educated enough to know that Micro$oft goes against everything America represents and is the ugly side of Capitalism that will humiliate the U.S. more than George W. in the history books. Prince can't have it both ways. He sings anti-corporate songs and then sucks up to Micro$oft.

As he would sing, "that ain't truth."

There are more than a few sites that move people to one player or another.

And if everyone else is doing it...

Also dude its just 25$ and that site is more than worth that.

I can't agree with you on this. It's a scam. The ONLY way it's worth the money is if you spend MORE money buying EXTREMELY overpriced shirts, etc. You pay $25.00 to spend $50.00 on a SHIRT that was made with SLAVE labor (last I heard, Prince was against slavery and exploitation for profit).

You have the oppourunity to buy tickets before everyone else and get some really good seats to a Prince concert.

Although you're still paying to pay money, I have to agree with you that this is the ONE thing that almost makes the club worth it.

Plus you also can buy your aftershow tickets before everyone else that is not in the club and not have to wait in line or stay on the phone dialing and dialing.

I bought my aftershow tickets at Paisley and entered the building. No calling. No dealing with the Internet and I had access to the same "seats" I would have had I purchased them through the Music Club. Has a single Aftershow sold-out during the Musicology tour? If you received tickets at a discount, it would be a deal, but charging the same amount to buy tickets that are sold at the door isn't anything special.

I don't think you will find another fan site that offers as much for that low a price.

Metallica's site allows you to buy an audio CD of the concert you attended a few days after the show for $9.99. KISS sells you a DVD of the show, IMMEDIATELY after the concert ends for under $10.00. And guess what? You don't need to pay $25.00 before you get these deals. Prince sells a .99 cent song for .77 cents. I've been a diehard Prince fan for well over 20 years and still think the Music Club is a rip.

I haven't joined and am not about to join. I ordered "Exodus" (which was horrible) from 1-800-NEW-FUNK but they hardly ever had stuff that was not already available in the record store. All they ever had was T Shirts and calendars.....big deal. I love Prince for the music, I could care less about the clothes and calendars. I got a free cassette of "The War" in the mail one day. I thought that was nice.

I remember before Prince had the NPGMC, he had a site that you could listen to a sample of unreleased stuff. It all sounded like shit.

I downloaded several unreleased tracks from the "old Prince" from Napster years ago. That was a major task. First I had to wait about 2 hours for each track to download. Then I had to unplug the computer, take it in the other room, go behind the entertainment center, sort through all the wires, plug the computer up to the stereo, and record the tracks. Then go through the same process to bring the computer back into the other room. It was a MAJOR inconvenience but, hey, it was the "old Prince" and it was worth it.

I knew if there were any unreleased tracks on the NPGMC, they would be the same type of music he has been recording recently. As far as preferred concert tickets, he has only come to my city twice....once in 1980 and once in 1997. I drove to Louisiana for the "Musicology" tour.

If there were some unreleased "old Prince", I would consider joining. Other than that, it's not worth the hassle.

I joined once the price dropped to $25. No way was I paying $100!

The fee was more than worth it once I got front row seats to the NY shows last month. I could never have done that through ticketmaster.

This relates to a new item that just went on sale in the Retail section:

STRAIGHT FROM AN NPGMC MODERATOR:
The NPGMC Membership gift card - The membership "number" on the card is merely a special one-time-use number 4 the new person 2 log on and select a member name without having 2 go thru the usual credit card process. The #'s sole purpose is 2 provide a code 2 the buyer they can use 2 activate a membership in the club. Essentially buying a membership in advance 4 the purposes of giving as a gift or buying through a retail store or on the tour.

The number on the card 2 take the place of a credit card, it is not a "Membership number."

Hey there txladykat!

I agree with you totally. All the TM charges are ludicrous! Being able to skip over those makes it worth it! But really, here are the reasons I joined:

#1 I am a huge Prince fan
#2 Access to tix before the general public, you get invited to tapings, video shoots, etc. that the general public does not
#3 On some tours, you get free soundcheck access and free aftershows (or at least you get into the aftershows BEFORE the TM people which is great, esp. in small venues cuz u almost always are right up front!)
#4 You get to hook up with some hardcore Prince fans

I paid $100 in 2001, $100 in 2002, and $25 in 2003. I would do it again in heartbeat nod
