Well, I am gonna be honest with you. At first the nite was just off to a horrible start. They were supposed to let us in at 6pm with a starting time of 7pm printed on the tix. Well, they didnt open the gates till 7pm and when we finally got in...Prince didn't grace the stage until a little after 9pm. It was a wonderful show. I went to see him at the Marcus three years ago and this concert completely and absolutly outshone that one by far!!!

I dont know the setlist...but it is the basic setlist we have been seeing on here. Prince had this one girl come up on stage while he sang the Outkast song and let me tell ya...girl had her groove going on! Oh, and before I forget. When Prince had everyone come on stage to jam with him...well, it was NOT all skinny little half dressed girls. Matter of fact...most of them were quite the opposite. There were so many kids there too. I almost regret not taking my daughter(she is 11 and a HUGE Prince fan). I didn't take her because the poor girl was sick and had a fever. I didn't wanna take her and have her get sick and have to leave...I know kinda selfish but it was in her interest too.

I am not the best one to try and give you any kind of a review right now...still a little dizzy from everything last night...didnt get home until almost two o'clock(concert ended at 11:30) and had to be up with my children at 6:00. I hope this little synapsis will do well until someone whom is actually qualified and awake can give you a real review of this kickass concert.

Thousands of Prince fans line up at least a mile before his performance at the Marcus Amphitheater Thursday, June 24, 2004 at Summerfest.


Prince kept an eager crowd of about 21,000 waiting two hours past the start time printed on their tickets Thursday evening at the Marcus Amphitheater. But the man who has innovated his own sound, a flawless meld of funk, rock, pop and whatever else strikes his fancy, has surely earned the right to operate in his own time zone.

Was this first headlining event of Summerfest 2004 worth the wait?

Oh, yeah.

Prince, with backing band New Power Generation, dived into "Musicology," the title track of his latest album, perhaps his most accessible since "Purple Rain." And it was a playful extended medley of songs from that landmark 1984 album that came next: a raucous "Let's Go Crazy," during which purple streamers and white confetti rained down, followed by "I Would Die 4 U," "When Doves Cry" - featuring a cheeky snippet of "Kiss" - and "Baby I'm a Star."

Dressed in a tailored black suit that sported a fringed, rawhide back side, Prince didn't look a day older than when he was a musician in his mid-20s embarking on the ambitious "Purple Rain" movie and album.

His trademark spins and orgiastic guitar solos are still as sharp as the cut of his clothes, but Thursday night he also showed a warmth and intimacy that sometimes felt lacking during the '90s, when musical experimentation and a bitter feud with his former label seemed to take center stage.

Pulling a young audience member onto the stage during a free-form jam, Prince gave his sly smile and quipped, "Don't fall, sugar. I ain't got no insurance," before breaking into Big Boi of OutKast's hit, "I Like the Way You Move."

Later in the set, alone onstage with his acoustic guitar, Prince delivered a stunning, pared-down "Little Red Corvette" and "Raspberry Beret," and in-between led the crowd through a singalong of "Cream."

Teasing the rapt audience members that their singing wasn't sexy enough, Prince stopped mid-verse.

"If you don't think it's hot, go home tonight and sing it to yourself in the mirror," he purred.

Prince allowed the talented members of New Power Generation ample time to show off in the spotlight, notably saxophone players Candy Dulfer, during an extended jam on "Controversy," and Maceo Parker, whose poignant riffing off "What a Wonderful World" was nothing short of sublime.

Much of the delay to the show's start was apparently due to Prince running late during his sound check. Deadlines precluded a review of the entire show.
