Detroit: That was MY DAD dancing up there with Prince! Well, here's how the story goes: During the "One Night Alone" concert stop at the Detroit Opera House, my friend Cheryl kept saying to me, "You know, you should have brought your dad" especially because the show had such a jazz feel to it. So I shared this with my dad and he said, "Well, I hope one day before I DIE that you take me to a Prince concert." So, of course he was to go with me the next time Prince graced our fair city--Dad's 79 years old, after all, and has been a fan as long as I have (1978). Well, wouldn't ya know? Prince decides to bring "Musicology" back to Detroit on FATHER'S DAY. So I go online and do the pre-sale and we end up with side seats because the floor sold out. Fast forward to the present: June 20. My dad is so excited he can hardly wait, "What time are you picking me up? I don't want to miss a NOTE". We arrive, pick up our tickets and I notice that they say "Section 101, Row 1, Seats 1 and 2". What the? I thought we were going to get side seats? We go into the arena and two ushers helped him get down the steps and lo and behold, we've got FRONT ROW SEATS. He did a little dance, he was so geeked. The show starts, Prince makes his way over to our side a few times, we're waving and smiling and dancing. And then it happens: Prince motions to me and my dad to let my dad come up on stage. My dad didn't pick up on it right away, especially 'cause his hearing isn't that great, so I tapped my dad on the shoulder and pointed to Prince. My dad looked at me like, "Who ME????" and then security helped him through the barricade and PRINCE helped him up the steps. I was in complete shock. So was my sister, who was elswhere on the floor. She said she kept screaming to everyone around her, "That's MY FATHER UP THERE!!" Those of you who were there saw my dad doing his thing, cracking me up that he turned his baseball cap backwards before he started to "get down". So he comes down off the stage, but he's on cloud eleventy-eleven. Needless to say, he thoroughly enjoyed the whole concert--watching Prince do his "thang" up close and personal after all these years of seeing him on TV and my videotapes and CDs (well, records back in the day). And after the concert we can't get out of the Palace because people keep coming up to him, patting him on the back, shaking his hand, shouting compliments and he even gave one autograph. Thanks Prince for giving my dad a night he'll never forget. [This message was edited Mon Jun 21 8:35:43 2004 by NuPwr319] [This message was edited Mon Jun 21 8:39:45 2004 by NuPwr319] | |
