I think if you play annechristians reply backwards it really says: (in a snottly English accent) "This concert was indeed fine in tone and content showing vast ranges of musical ability and brandishing talent like a MF!"

When I wrote my thoughts about the Saginaw show, I wondered whether it was going to be well received. Now I see that my review was a bunch of shit compared to this wonderful descriptive post. I feel like I was there !!!

The Chicago show was not much different than the Saginaw review given by dendmmr. He did not sing "Adore" in Chicago. He did however sing Starfish and Coffee. I think he sang a little of "Condition of the Heart." I was a little fuzzy at this point of the show. I enjoyed the vibe from the members at the show. It was obvious who knew the material from The Rainbow Children. He ended with Anastasia with parts of Everlasting Now interjected.

Ok, it wasn't "Condition of the Heart." It was "Sometimes it Snows in April." Fuzziness is wearing off.

As someone who was not a huge fan of The Rainbow Children, I was a little nervous about what this, my 9th Prince concert would be like. He always throws down in Chi-town so I hoped for the best. He didn't let me down. Prince is obviously more subdued these days, but the music was slamming. He did my favorites from Rainbow - The Rainbow Children, Muse 2 The Pharaoh, and Mellow, 1+1+1 is 3,and Family Name. I love that Prince has become more Afro-centric these days and speaks the truth in ways that others are afraid too. When he stated that Abraham Lincoln was a racist the section that I was in cheered and cheered.

He kept saying that he wasn't going to do any old school jams and that had me worried but he came through for us with Strange Relationship, Starfish & Coffee, When You Were Mine, How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore, Free, La La Means I Love You, Sometimes It Snows In April, Anna Stesia, and covers of Santana's Soul Sacrifice, Erykah Badu's Didn't Cha' Know, The Ohio Player's Love Roller coaster, Sly & The Family Stone's Sing A Simple Song. No Purple Rain though. He said earlier that if you came to get your Purple Rain on it wasn't that time of party. I can understand wanting to move forward, but it was strange not to hear Purple Rain, it's like Santana not doing Black Magic Woman. Hmmm, Prince may want to re-think that.

Minus the preaching and Biblical references (I'm not a Christian or religious person, I dwell in the spiritual), I had a wonderful time and truly enjoyed the show! I also have to add the Prince is still the SEXIEST man I have ever seen in my life!!!!!

paz y luz,

Bella

PS Did anyone go to the after party? The NPG security were such jerks and it was so cold that I didn't even bother to wait in line in the snow. At one point the security guy yelled all we care about is the money. I thought that was just awful! Even members with passes had to wait in a long line in the cold, I was not about to do that, maybe 9 years ago when I was 17 and first saw Prince, but not now, I'm 26 and too old for that.

Those of U who didn't go 2 the after party-U didn't miss anything. He made a 2 minute appearnace, shook a few hands and said good night. I can say that Music Club Members and people on the guest list were allowed in first, our line was kinda short and there was no cover. I was lucky to get a hand shake but I feel sorry for people who paid thirty dollars and stayed all night long for nothing.

What is the deal with all these mofo's that want to Purple Rain? Haven't y'all heard it live a dozen times before? Does your body require hearing that song sung live on an annual basis or something?

P.R. wasn't a Number 1 single--Why is it such a "standard."

These are the people who I wish would just stay home so that Prince could concentrate on jamming and not playing his tired old Hits renditions. I'll take hearing ANY obscure Prince song (like The Other Side of the Pillow) over the 679th rendition of P.R. anytime!

Personally I couldn't care less that Prince isn't playing "Rain" on this tour. But a song doesn't have to be a #1 single to be an artist's standard. I suppose Springsteen fans think "Born To Run" is one of his standards too, but that song didn't even reach the top 10.

I didn't mean to imply that. I just don't get why fans whine about him not playing tired-old songs like P.R., When Doves Cry, Kiss, etc. He's played them enough in the past--if you need to hear them again go throw City Lights on the CD player.

I have no problem with him playing old songs, but I just wish he'd go with more obscure songs that we haven't heard as much--like Strange Relationship, etc. Back in '97, I thought it was great when he had 17 Days in the setlist, but by the time the arena JOTY tour took shape a few months later, songs like that (and a lot of the Emancipation songs he had been playing like Mr. Happy and Somebody's Somebody) were replaced by the "Hits."

I really hope whining fair-weather fans--who hate TRC but still have the nerve to go to a tour in which he publicly states these songs will be played--don't coerce him into abandoning the new songs in favor of the Hits. This exact scenario is what caused the Gold tour to be cancelled--a tour which I would have loved to have seen. The last thing we need is another JOTY / Hit N Run yawner.

Well I am definitely NOT a fair-weather fan as I have been to see Prince everytime he has been to Chicago since 1993. I truly enjoy all the music that he plays whether they are chart toppers or not. As a musician, I do not believe that chart status dictates whether a song is a "standard" or hit. Kenny G. is the top-selling instrumentalist of all time. Need I say more?

The point is that many people associate Purple Rain with Prince as his trademark song, so they look forward to hearing it. I don't think that anything is wrong with that. If he plays great, if he doesn't oh well.

so a longtime fan who doesn't like TRC is now a fair-weather fan? that's bullshit. you're allowed to be a fan and not like something...and since i don't like TRC i'm not subjecting myself to a show full of it.

That's fine. My problem is with people who (i) don't like TRC; (ii) go to the show anyways; and (iii) complain where are the Hits? If Prince had toured in support of RAVE, I might have stayed home as well. But if I had gone, I would have let him play the new material without complaining about it.

Critics suck bottom line. Those who can -- do, those who can't-- write concert reviews for the Suntimes.
Have any of you been to his Jam sessions at P.Park? It is obvious that quality music means nothing to the majority of people who attended the concert. By no means am I trying to be an elitlst, but between the surrounding concert goers who continued to piss and moan about how the concert wasn't a 82-89 reunion, and that article posted by that P.O.S critic, I am pissed to be a new member of the Chi community.

"Why should I do that, when I can do this!"

I have to agree. This is a damaged show. I know where Price was going but he is acting like he is just finding out that all things are not what they seem. I expected positivity. I expexted the Rainbow. His descision to take the concertgoers on a painfull racist-edged journy did not bring people together. It did just the opposite (bring people together, empower, kinda what NATO is meant to do and Prince did declare to everyone that the opposite of NATO" is me"). Should have caught that clue early.

I do not mind the three acts of the show...The Gathering, The Conflict, and the Resolution. I do mind that the conflict was hovering over the audience until the last freakin song of the nite. It damaged the show. I had to fight my way through anger, listening to great songs with a lump in my throat until five minuets left when he said that Race is stupid and that Color does not matter. Don't get me wrong, I did not mind the anger that he put in, I thought that he made his point poorly.

This could have been an amazing event to bring people togetehr in song but Prince seemed so juvennile in his seemingly newfound knowledge that a white man before 1860 made a racist comment...shocker! I'll write a song!

Anyway, I'm still going to do Louisville to see if I can enjoy the central act of the show. Because what happened in America Sucked...What has happened in America Sucked... What happens in America Sucks. We know that.

BTW: My highlight was the house music. Listen to the new album XENOPHOBIA. That is the house music. (At least it was 3-2)

Anyway, back to my rant...Prince, you do not "Rise" this way. If it is your aim to build the Rainbow, work on fixing the pain. Not insulting us like we did not know people lie...or change... or hate. We listen to your music to get beyond that.

Prince, I am sorry if the things you speak of in your concerts and in Family Name are revelations to you. You have a long way to go. But please choose your path more wisely.

Prince, fams, if we are going to "rise", we have to stop beating things down.

In short, the show is decent but damaged.
