Mpls, June 18th Setlists (Concert & Aftershow) Xcel Center (June 18th)
"Call My Name" video [8:20-8:25pm] Prince & The Band [8:25-10:55pm] Video intro Musicology Let's Go Crazy I Would Die 4 U When Doves Cry 1999 Intro - Baby I'm A Star Renato interlude Shhh D.M.S.R. This time a local fan and Paisley regular that was spotlighted by Prince the first night for dancing along with his moves, was asked onstage by Prince. She went up and did her thing, and did it well. The Way You Move [Outkast] / Mike Phillips Sax Vocoder A Love Bizarre / I Feel 4 You Controversy A Love Bizarre Renato interlude God (Love Theme From Purple Rain) Instrumental (played by Renato Neto on keys and Mike Phillips on sax, while Prince changed for the acoustic set) Acoustic Set (featuring Mike Scott on rhythm guitar) Little Red Corvette Cream Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child Jailhouse Rock? (I forget) Raspberry Beret Telemarketer Blues I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man Alphabet St. On The Couch 7 (band returns to the stage) Full Band Sign O' The Times Dear Mr. Man Whole Lotta Love [Led Zeppelin] Drum solo (a furious demonstration by John Blackwell) Prince & The Band Let's Work U Got The Look Life O' The Party Soul Man [Sam & Dave] (featuring Chance Howard on vox) Kiss Take Me With U Encore Beautiful Ones Nothing Compares 2 U Purple Rain ***** Paisley Park (June 19th A.M.) When I arrived at about 12:30am, the night's concert was playing on the projection screens in the NPGMC room while Kip Blackshire performed in the soundstage. For Kip's last song, Prince and Larry Graham joined them onstage. Kip was already singing, while Prince played the keys and Larry took up the bass. The End of Kip's Set, with Prince & Larry [1:35-1:55am] ? (a song I don't recall) Everyday People ***** The Band Prince (vox, bass guitar) Larry Graham (bass guitar) Mike Scott (guitar) Rhonda Smith (bass) John Blackwell (drums) Morris Hayes (keys) Renato Neto (keys) Chance Howard (keys) Maceo Parker (alto sax) Candy Dulfer (alto sax) Mike Phillips (alto sax, vocoder sax) Greg Boyer (trombone) The Aftershow [2:35-4:50am] It's quite possible that there were more songs played. Frankly, with the long week, shows and jams, my attention wandered. Call My Name (Prince on vox, with the normal touring band) Joy In Repetition Girls & Boys Knock On Wood [Eddie Floyd / Stax] (featuring Chance Howard on vox) What Is Hip? [Tower of Power] (featuring Prince back on vox) Funk Jam / Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) Blackwell Drum solo Speechless (Instrumental) [Beyonce] (featuring Mike Phillips on sax) Shake Everything You've Got [Maceo Parker] At this point Prince picked up the bass guitar and Morris Hayes replaced Chance Howard on keys. Superstition [Stevie Wonder] (featuring Kip Blackshire on vox) 777-9311 Brick House [The Commodores] No Diggity [Blackstreet] (featuring Chance Howard on vox) The Jam (featuring Larry Graham on bass guitar and vox, and solos by each bandmember.) 10 minute break. Encore Purple Rain (featuring an extended sax intro by Maceo Parker, and a subdued version of the song with Prince solely on vox) Adore Before "Adore", Prince stripped down everything but the drums. He commented that "We usually don't play this; we got a request." After giving John drumming instructions, and calling out notes/chords for the players, Prince launched directly into the song. Ex-Moderator | After 2 nights of somewhat obstucted view behind the horns, I was rewarded, blessed, privileged, whatever you want to call it, with front row seats smack dab in the middle of the north and west catwalks. Right in front of Rhonda. I never knew life could be so good. My friend and I were literally speechless through the show. Let me just say, I had a BALL in those other seats, I just didn't know what I had been missing. Highlights for me tonight were, again, DMSR (I don't think I've danced harder at a show) and then when he played On the Couch (which had been omitted from the previous nights' acoustic sets) I was reduced to a puddle on the floor. There were no words.
Fast forward to the aftershow and Joy in Reptition reduced me to that puddle again, along with near tears flowing out of my eyes. When Girls and Boys started I thought I'd have a heart attack! Never heard it live. After a few hours of jamming that was truly amazing (though I was having a hard time getting into as I was sooooo dead tired at this point) he pulled out Adore, and wowed us once again. In all the years and all the shows and all the celebrations and everything I've been to, last night tops it all. All. I can't believe it's over, but I'll be "high" for weeks off of this. |

Hey played the most amazing version of when doves cry at the show, but my favorite parts had to be DMSR, SHHH, Johnny's solo and Controversy. Damn, Prince ripped that shit to peices, cooked it, and served it up well done.

Carrie and Vi- I'm so happy y'all got to be in that section once this week. That's how my week kicked off and I did feel blessed to have had those seats! (granted I was in the 5th row, not 1st, but it didn't really matter much) I realized the blessing of those seats even more so as I spent the next two nights tryina see around the drums

actually this was a pretty good aftershow as far as aftershows and paisley shows go. the previous 2 nites were more like jam sessions, but some cool and rare and interesting trax played

man by the time we ran into each other we were both so wore-out that we could barely speak! I'm so happy that you were able to get to the Friday events though!

I could see a few of you from the club level seating where I was sitting. I saw endorphin74, dansa, violett...maybe others but it was kinda hard to tell from my view. I was up in C34 row 2. I don't know if you've been up in the club level or second level seating before, but the rows are like a 45 degree angle drop, and here's me who's afraid of heights! I literally had to crawl to my seat after reaching row 3 or 4. My friend Sheldon kept giving me crap the whole time before the concert started. I was one of the very few that actually SAT almost the entire concert because I could not get myself to stand because I was sure I would pass out and over the 2 foot ledges they have between row 1 and 30 feet down or whatever the hell the height was. Note to self: next time buy LOWER LEVEL SEATING!
It was great seeing a few of you out at Paisley in the afternoon. Were you there Violett? I should have stopped on the way out but for some reason I totally blanked out in conversation while leaving the premesis. Anyone see my message on the picnic table drawings? "Digitize the vault, please! Save the music! -NCC2012" Glad everyone had a great time! We gotta all meet up again sometime. NCC2012... your local Trekkie. =/\=

NCC2012, it was great meeting you this week! I'm happy we crossed paths again at the Park again on Friday cos the rest of that evening got a titch outta hand It's kinda fun that you could see some of from your seats though.
I had friends in the upper deck who told me about how scary the incline was, so don't worry, you weren't alone in your discomfort! I'll post pics as soon as I have 'em!

Oh whatever, I really don't want to come across a sour grapes, and I certainly don't want to take anything away from anyone who was there and really dug the aftershow....so maybe I'll just shut up for a bit. I can't pretend that I liked something that I didn't though, and I'll admit that I was shocked to be so bored to tears by Prince's band, but there you have it. The main show tore the roof off...but for me anyway, the aftershow took all that post-concert buzz and shoved it up my coochie.
