My Daughter's Dallas Experience

First of all, let me say how much I appreciate all the kind responses to my lengthy San Antonio post (http://www.prince.org/msg/12/97732). One of my many faults is that I never use one word when 10 will do! But it so nice to see all the positivity! Prince fans are just great people.

OK, here's another 1,000 words or so... biggrin

Our Dallas experience really begins in San Antonio. On the way out of the arena, we ran into Josh and his beautiful daughter. We were talking about the show (Prince gave his daughter a high-five!) and I mentioned we were heading to Dallas. He told me that the fellow sitting next to him had two NPGMC Dallas tix that he couldn't use and that he would only take face value for them. The fellow's name was John, and Josh gave me John's phone number.

This was great, because I only had two tix to Dallas, and my wife was going to fly up and meet me for the show. My plan was that either she and I or she and my daughter would go to the show. One of us would have to miss it, but if I could hook up with John, we could all go.

I got hold of John and he was UNBELIEVABLY nice. I am still overwhelmed by what he and his lady did. Check this out: John drove to Dallas just so I could get his tix, then he turned around and drove to HOUSTON for his sister's wedding! Look at a map and see how far out of his way he went, just for us! And he would not even let me pay anything for his gas money! JT, you are the BEST and PLEASE let me host you, buy you dinner, or SOMETHING when you come to Houston.

John's seats were on the front row, behind John Blackwell, and my seats were on the seventh row at the "front" part of the stage. My daughter and wife decided to sit by John Blackwell, and were surrounded by really nice people - many of whom remembered my daughter from San Antonio. Even though I had told my wife about what happened in San Antonio, I don't think she fully realized it until about the 20th person came up to our daughter and said "Hey, I saw you onstage Wednesday night!"

During the first part of the show, my wife came over to my seat and showed me the wrist bands that her and our daughter were wearing, and said they had been picked to go up onstage. Of course, I got excited.

But during the dancing part of the show, they were not onstage. I was a little worried, thinking that something had happened, but I was also a little confused when she showed me her wristband and said it was for getting onstage. In San Antonio, everyone on the front row was given a wristband so that security would know who was supposed to be on the front row and who wasn't, and that's what I thought my wife's wrist band might be for. Turns out I was right, and they didn't get to dance onstage.

So I was kind of bummed because I thought that would be a huge disappointment to my daughter, and I was preparing my "don't worry baby, you still got to do something special in San Antonio" speech for when I met up with them after the show.

I went to our pre-arranged meeting place in the lobby and waited for them. Imagine my surprise when my daughter walks up not wearing a frown, but an ear-to-ear smile. The reason? She was carrying one of John Blackwell's cymbals! It was almost as big as she was!

During the show, John had given my daughter a couple drumsticks. She already had two from the San Antonio show, so she gave one to a fellow who only had one stick. But not long after that, someone took her other stick off her seat - just stole it right out from under her. After the show, as John was autographing drumsticks, my daughter told him what happened. He said, "Wait right here - I've got something better for you." He went onto the stage, took out one of his cymbals, and autographed it for her. Incredible!

The show itself was amazing. The setlist was just about the same as San Antonio, except for the acoustic part. He played "Something in the Water (Does not Compute)" and "Motherless Child". I was freaking out, and after the show told my wife that there couldn't have been 10 people in the arena who had ever heard of "Motherless Child". She said the people sitting next to her had become friends with John Blackwell and had asked him to ask Prince to play that song, and he did!

All in all, it was a great week. The best part was meeting such nice people, both in the band and in the stands. I wouldn't trade this past week for anything, and we will never forget it! Thank you to all the great people who made it happen!

See you in Houston!

tell the wife and daughter I said Hi!!!!

she was so good during the show, I know she couldn't see but she was a trooper. She really made an impact on those of us all around her. John Blackwell is the sweetest person, he really cared about her and her experience. she is a very lucky young lady.

see you in houston!

Me thinks Prince current direction in life is a major reason for this beautiful thing happening. Everyone involved played their part perfectly in the master plan leaving us all extremely pleased w/ the outcome. It is most interesting how when we play our parts the right way we all benefit.
