N! P! G! In Erykah's Funky House!!! (a bit long)

eek Wow, what can I say while looking at the screen with glazed over eyeballs.....?

A brief aside on the concert...off the meat rack, first of all! There's already discussion on the setlist (see http://www.prince.org/msg/12/97842), so I won't go into that too much. Good memory, rhylan, on the setlist. thumbs up! The show lasted about 2 hours, 25 minutes, as I remember. It was funky the whole way through as expected. I was at the April 2nd show, so I just knew I was in for roughly the same treat. WRONG! IT was betta! He tightened up the show, rearranged songs and such. Even from the balcony (I was on the floor for the first show and got tickets late this time), the whole vibe was funky. One note about being up high at the show: upside, you see the whole stage, no one is ever out of your sight, and the screens give you close ups should you be wondering about facial expressions or fret fingering; downside, loads of people around you will not stand much, if at all, as you probably would. That's a bit disappointing if you came to get your party on. Either way , I stood for about 98% of the show. biggrin

Point of note: did anyone who went notice the moment Prince took off his wedding ring and threw it behind him? eek (Yes folks he did this)

Now for that afterparty...

Getting out of the concert for the quick drive to Erykah Badu's recent buy, The Black Forest Theatre on the south side was very short and direct, letting no vibe go out of the pores. After standing in a short line, we were all inside, walking through the foyer and down to the main floor, where it was already well populated. A few acts performed, including NaRock (sp?), E. Badu's little sister (mainly hard rock music cool ), then came Erykah. She performed a few songs. A couple of new, a couple of old. During the acts performing, you could see Prince in the VIP section on the balcony, vibing, dancing, and sitting around, depending on the music going on. For the ladies: he was wearing a gold derby, gold pants and boots, and a black and gold vest and wristbands reminiscent of Chief Sitting Bull with the leather fringes hanging (no slam to native americans, btw).

Erykah started in on Do Me Baby, and the crowd went wild! We knew who was up to bat as he was announced as her "special guest". E. Badu and clan left the stage and the NPG took their places as Prince readied himself to go through the parted crowd. Few people touched him (Rave66 was one wave ) and he made it up there, then kicked the band into D.M.S.R. for a lengthy jam. headbang Just to note, he didn't take the guitar at all last night. sad He was obviously in a gum chewing, dancing, and playful mood (with the expected bags under his eyes). Other songs done were standard from the concert: I Feel 4 U (Glamourous Life and Love Bizarre leading into to it), and Controversy (long too). If there were any other songs, forgive me. Not too much memory of those details.

But, for those who were concerened about the 'ring throwing' from the concert, ladies, he had it back on. As I'm sure many would have wanted to know, I made sure that that is what he did at the full show. Seeing that I watch on guitar playing and see finger movements, I saw him take it off (could have gotten in the way at the moment) and throw it.

Anyway, the show was HOT, so was the theatre!!! Not much apparent air blowing, so I now sympathize with those who were at Celeys before in the heat. Prince was even sweating, along with the rest of the group, including Rhonda, who sat the whole time from apparent need for sleep. Cute. biggrin We finally left the theatre at 4:00a.m. bound for home. What a night...

Sorry, but one important detail I meant to point out:

Maceo really delivered on the tribute to Ray Charles, peeps. A very sad loss in music and the world in general. "Georgia" has always been a beautiful song, but really turned the party into a somber, but honorable, moment. Great insert to the setlist, NPG.

Ray Charles, rest in peace, my brotha. sad

Well, for some of us who have never seen one from him, it was a treat. I have heard of better, and I've heard of worse. There's always someone who looks at things in the worst way. He could have simply gone without doing one. I guess that would have been betta. Geesh! confused

Hi Xpsiter wave

Again, for those of us who have never had a chance to go to a Prince aftershow and get that close to Prince (not to mention to touch him) was a treat. dancing jig I'm sure there have been better aftershows, but for me to finally be able to attend, it was worth the three hour wait. I do look forward to attending future aftershow's in which he will really turn it out. I'm in no way dissappointed. cloud9 Just seeing him groovin and hangin out up in the balcony of the theatre was a treat. So all the negativity you have to say, won't ruin a thing for me. Did I mention I touched Prince?

And yes, Foley rocked the hell outta SISTER!!! headbang

yes he did!!!

I like you was just happy to be in the house!!! watching him up there bouncing around was cool and after when he was up there again.

cool, I was at the other after show in Dallas in 2002, more music that time but I felt I don't know like we saw a more human side of him this time. He was tweaking with the equipment because it was Erykah's bands stuff. all in all I loved it

I prefered Erykah as far as the performance went and oh what about D madness nobody's talking about that brother.. lol

We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.

Added pieces of note now that I've got rest and I've been reminded from a few posts:

1. It was way cool to hear "Sister" headbang Foley was goin' off!

2. D Madness was interesting...I could have done without the singing, but for him to do all his music live, by himself, AND blind was cool.

3. I found it interesting that Prince was tweaking the sound a bit on the amp head.

I didn't expect the aftershow to be somem mind-blowing, Prince-history-making moment to rival Small Club, Bataclan, or whatever. It was just my enjoyment of seeing live bands, as well as Prince, perform even after a concert.
