July 24 - Chicago - SETLIST (no real review from me)

Tonight was my 2nd time seeing Prince on this Musicology tour. (1st was in Champaign, Illinois back in April.) I thought my 2nd time would be his upcoming Chicago show in August.....but someone gave me dad TWO FREE TICKETS for tonight's show eek and my dad gave them to ME. biggrin

It was great. Prince has, of course, played MANY shows since April.....but, in my own humble opinion, he interacted with/talked to us in the audience a lot more at this show than my last Prince experience. (Having audio-recorded his Champaign show and listening to all the time, it wasn't hard to remember/compare. smile ) Also--this was my first time EVER seeing PRINCE PLAY BASS!!!!! This was so AMAZING! A once-in-a-lifetime, dream-come-true moment for me! Also, whenever the spotlight was put on John Blackwell, the man THREW DOWN!

Setlist:

1st set:
- Musicology
- Let's Go Crazy
- I Would Die 4 U
- When Doves Cry

- 1999 (opening chords only) / Baby I'm A Star
- Shhh!
- D.M.S.R. [Dance Music Sex Romance]
- Crazy In Love
- Pass The Peas

- A Love Bizzare (riff only)/ The Glamorous Life (riff only) / I Feel For You
- Controversy / Housequake
- What A Wonderful World
- Sometimes It Snows In April (piano instrumental)
--- acoustic ---
- Little Red Corvette
- Cream
- I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
- Black Sweat (? not sure of title)
- Alphabet St.
- Adore
-----
- Seven
- Sign O' The Times
- Question Of U / The One / Fallin'
- Pop Life

2nd set:
- Let's Work
- U Got The Look
- Life O' The Party
- Knock On Wood (? not sure of title, a cover)'
- Kiss
- Take Me With U

encore:
- The Beautiful Ones
- Nothing Compares 2 U
- Purple Rain

Much respect to the thick sister who was asked up to the stage and who jammed....and the small sister who was asked to sing along on "Take Me With U"!!

Crazy moment of the night: SOMEONE DELIVERED A PIZZA TO PRINCE ON THE STAGE WHILE HE WAS SINGING/PLAYING. PRINCE TOLD HIM TO PUT IT DOWN SOMEWHERE AND HE KEPT SINGING. A LITTLE BIT LATER, PRINCE PICKED UP THE PIZZA AND GAVE IT TO A SECTION OF FRONT-ROW FANS! That definitely goes in my list of "top 5 odd-est things that I've seen at a concert"! smile

If anyone sees a mistake, let me know! I can't wait to hear what songs he played at tonight's aftershow!!!

After reading the setlist from the 1st and 3rd concerts, I'm starting to feel like those of us who only went to the 2nd show really did get jipped! He must have been rushing because our encore was only Purple Rain, and it wasn't half as good as it was the last time. sad

And he sang The Beautiful Ones. mad

I give up. Prince doesn't like me I guess. (Or I just have really bad luck.)

On this tour, I have come to realize that if Prince is playing multiple shows in your town, you have to go to at least two of them or you risk missing out on one of the better shows. His first night in Detroit was good, but the second night was so much better. I would have actually been a little dissappointed if I hadn't gone to the second show and found out that the performance was not only better, but the sound was better and he performed 10 more songs on the second night. I was still upset that both nights only go one song encores.. sad

I just graduated from college in May and started working in June. I cannot keep spending $75 dollars a pop on concert tickets to see Prince. I love Prince as an artist, but I am a child of the 80s so I love everybody. I went to see Madonna last week also and ticket prices are getting outrageous these days. I simply cannot afford it. I really wanted to go to the aftershow last night, but for ANOTHER $75 dollars, I don't think so! I may just have to watch one of the DVDs from this tour to catch The Beautiful Ones because I'm done.

LaughinAtYall, I felt the same way when I heard the aftershow cost $75. It just dawned on me--it IS another Prince concert. And that's why the aftershow has a Prince-concert price. After reading Anxiety's review of the aftershow, I wish I would've gone and think that I wouldn't have missed my spent $$$ at all. (But tickets were actually all sold out anyway. )

Like you, paying for multiple same-city-Musicology-shows is something I cannot do. Even though there would naturally be some differences, the shows will be waayyy too similar. But paying for a concert and an aftershow---which will be two totally different concerts---THAT, I can do.

Question--

Is it just me, or did Candi Dulfer get virtually no spotlight at this show??!

I don't know if I'm comparing it to the last show I went to.....'cause she was always visible and Prince was constantly jamming with her down in Champaign (but Maceo wasn't there there...hmmm)..... or if it was the fact that the CAMERAS hardly ever showed her face last night. She did so much singing, but got very little attention, except her 2 "big" sax solos. Any thoughts??

smile The Show WAS awesome on Saturday night.. The best of the 3 nights I think! Prince was having so much fun and jaming and just going crazy!!
He looked So hot.. Friday night he didn't hardly even change clothes.. but Sat. night he looked So dauper!! Oh baby!!!!!
I have been to 8 shows on this Musicology tour.. I have had Front row 2 times. 2nd row 4 times and 3rd row 2 times.....
ALL the seats have been awesome views and a couple of times I was So close to Prince I could see the sweat Drippin off him! smile
I am SO glad I was a Member of the NPG music Club and could get these great seats!!!!! smile
Everything went great on Saturday night. Only thing I noticed is at one point Princes "mike Gun" was not working and he threw it in the "pit" and got another one.. But later on it was working again.
I am SO glad that I still have ONE show left in August.. (August 3rd) and I am in the 2nd row again!!!!! biggrin Sweet!!!!!

OH: not that I'm a fan or know who these people are, but three chicks from American Idol were sitting in our row and were pulled up on stage during the first half of the show. I couldn't tell you who they were, except I remember TOFKA telling me one of them was Tamira Grey (sorry if I completely butchered her name).

Perhaps I didn't recognize it! I have 1999 on vinyl...and I haven't listened to that song in forever. Can anyone confirm this?? Well...guess I can go listen to the 1999 record, then listen to my recording of the show and try to confirm it myself, too.

Hope you get a chance to hear him play that one live, superspaceboy!

Correction:

I haven't heard "Something In The Water", but
between Alphabet St. and Adore, he sang "Prince And The Band" (acoustic).

After "Alphabet St.", when Prince starting making a drum beat on the back of his acoustic guitar, my friend and I were joking about Kat's rap on the original Alphabet St. (y'all remember that?) ..... and, never having heard "Alphabet St." live before, we continued joking, thinking that Prince was gonna do a new rap in place of Kat's Rap .... I wasn't paying enough attention to realize he was doing "Prince And The Band".

(Sorry!)

Was TAVIS SMILEY in the house at this show Saturday night? A friend told me that he's been on Jeopardy competing (and is clearly a very, very, very booksmart man), meaning he's been in Chicago.

Yeah, I saw Tavis at the show and posted about it somewhere yesterday. Thanks for the heads-up on the concert lyric. I misunderstood what P said about Tavis in SOTT...Oh he said genius..Thanks!! Hee hee.

I also only went to Friday night's show and couldn't help but feel like it was a "down night" compared to the show in June and what I've heard about Saturday night.

I was bummed that the encore was JUST "Purple Rain" too. But I didn't feel like I didn't get my money's worth or anything that drastic. I mean come on...it IS Prince! And there were new songs in the set, like "Prince and the Band," "Something In the Water...," and "Pop Life."

Maybe the audience near me was just kind of out of it...dead weight. I can't tell. At any rate, I would definitely rank the show on Friday below the one in June. But Prince on a bad night....you know? I'll take it.
