SYMBOL TAMBOURINES, RHYTHM-LESS FAMS

If ya gotta play your $50 tambourine, please do so in the privacy of your own home or car! We were trapped next to a beat-challenged woman at the Penn State show that insisted on playing hers ALLLL night long. We were all tempted to make the tambourine into a necklace for her but didn't have the heart. PLEASE leave them in the bag... we pay to hear John on percussion, not YOU!!!

Just pretend it's Santa and Mrs. Claus next to you and that they just want to be festive at the Prince show.

U are so right! A tamborine should be used sparingly 2 begin with. I can't stand when someone is shaking that dang thing right next 2 my head...And I'm chilled but that ringing steals away the sound that I'm there 2 hear...

If people want to bang their tambourines I say let them. They sell the damn things at the show for a reason!!

And on a related topic... you know what I hate? People who poke you in the back (usually hard) and try to get you to sit down when you're watching the show and digging it. Its only happened to me once at a Prince show but I've had it happen lots at other gigs.

If you can't see around me THEN STAND THE F*CK UP YOURSELF, LAZY B*STARD!! If I want to groove and dance and enjoy the show I F*CKIN' WILL!! I paid money to be there and I'll stand up and/or dance if I want to. If your lazy *ss wants to sit there then take the view you get and shut up, MF!!

Can you tell I'm passionate about this one? I get tired of lame-asses that don't know how to have a good time. I know one thing as a performer- I far prefer an audience who is into it and grooving to one who is sitting on its hands looking bored. I think all performers are the same way.

No one asked but that's my two cents!

I know exactly what you mean!!!! This lady who was in front of me insisted on shaking her tambourine (which I didn't mind), but she just wasn't doing it right...all off beat and everything. hmph!

I wanted to snatch it from her and tell her to just beat that shit beat!!!! pissed

She seriously needed to visit one of the mothers in my church that can bang the hell outta a tambourine! lol

the only time that's ever happened to me at a prince show was in minneapolis, during the first celebration. these hoes behind my friend and i were all like "SIT DOWN!!" and we were all like "IT'S A PRINCE SHOW!!" now, at some other shows, i can understand but, c'mon, prince! if you ain't gonna dance, fine, but you're gonna watch my ass shakin' in front of ya for the next 2-3 hours!

The only thing I really find inexcusable at a concert is when people are having some kinda conversation with each other through the whole show or blabbing away on their cell phone, and they're trying to "talk over the music", right into my damn ear.

As much as I really want to know about what you did today, how your boyfriend/girlfriend pissed you off today, how your job's going or what you feel like eating after the concert, I gotta humbly request:

TAKE IT OUTSIDE. mad

Better yet, hey, I have an idea: PAY ATTENTION TO THE DAMN SHOW. Surely you can put your fascinating lives on hold for two hours while Prince is right in front of ya playing his guitar. Sheesh....

I bought my tambourine at the Phoenix show...

I paid my money for my ticket so I can play my tambourine at any point during the show that I so choose. If they weren't allowed to be played they wouldn't be sold.

If you have a problem with someone playing the tambourine, speak up!

Just don't ask me what the symbol stands for...

I AGREE 100%!!!!! Artist can actually hear what people are saying on the first three five rows. I think it's utterly disrespectfully to the artist for two people to hold a conversation about their personal lives or someone elses.

I was at the Sting concert (in the balcony) when he stopped after the first three songs and told the people he could hear them then proceeded to repeat what they were saying. I believe his comments shut the first five rows mouths up with the quickness.

The only concert I've been to where even people in the back of the hall gave the artist the ultimate respect was Ben Harper at the Metro (Chicago). You could hear a pin drop when he did his encore on the acoustic guitar. It was so damn beautiful, I cried.

I always tell everyone around me at a Prince concert, I'm going to stand the entire concert, sing during the course, and dance to support my man Prince. So, I don't want to hear any attitude or complaining from them. Let it be known in the beginning what you're going to do and you will have a party good time.

Man I might be a Crazy Mo Fo but I bought mine from 1-800-New-Funk and it is still sealed in the clear plastic package. I was kinda disappointed when I saw them at the concert for sale. I was hoping they were discontinued...

I also bought a Purple one from 8-N-F it was much cheaper. It was simply wood, with no Symbol middle.

But you guys wear those prince Tambourines OUT so mine will be of such rare Quality~ lol

i used to have a tambourine but i demolished it in college when i was in a band and once during a show i pretended to be jimi hendrix and i bashed that poor tambourine up, sprayed lighter fluid on it and lit a match.

thankfully some of the audience survived with only second degree burns. smile

Da 12 year olds with da tambourines have spoken! Well, hey... if I bring my blowhorn to the show and hit it on the 1, you won't mind cuz I'm into the show myself, right? Check me if I'm wrong but John ain't hittin' the symbols all night long during every beat to every song, now is he? Where's dat purple blow horn at??? Maybe I'll drink some purple, heavily carbonated brew and make my butt cheeks into a bugle for the duration too cuz then I'd be playin' like Candy and she'd be into it. It'd be cool cuz I'm into the show, right? I suppose you all carry cameras with flash capabilities too... flash it on the "1" cuz it's YOUR party.... at least go to beat school first. Of course, anyone who spends $50 on a tambourine... well, 'nuf said.....

I would like to go further on that one : no screaming girls should be allowed to P's concerts. How many bootlegs have been ruined by those high-pitched shrieks during magical moments (acoustic interludes, Celebration performances etc.). And if you want to singalong to P's songs, buy a godamn karaoke machine !

I don't think Prince minds...

Funny, I don't mind either! It gives you a better feel of actually being there. I don't call that "ruined". If you don't have crowd noise you just have a rehearsal tape. Cool if that's what you want but it doesn't have the energy of a good concert.

And if you want to singalong to P's songs, buy a godamn karaoke machine !

ARE YOU FOR REAL?! First of all Prince himself encourages the audience to sing along. In KC on Tuesday he actually stopped and chided the crowd for getting the words wrong on the acoustic version of CREAM and coached them on what their part was.

And you can really hear Prince's joy and happiness on boots when the crowd starts singing along strongly w/ a number. On NOTHING COMPARES 2 U on the Fillmore boot from 2/14 the crowd takes over the song and its OFF THA HOOK.

If Prince doesn't have a problem with it they you shouldn't.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people want to go to a concert... and not have it be interactive at all. If you just want it to be you and Prince plug in the Vegas DVD, turn the volume all the way up, and sit 6 inches from your TV.

Part of the magic of the concert is the communal experience. Sure some people are annoying. Some are loud, some bump into you, some smoke weed, some get drunk and yack, etc. Its all part of the experience. If its too much for you STAY HOME!!

I know exactly what you mean - I went to an Echo and the Bunnymen show about half a year ago. It was a great performance, but there were two obnoxious preppie idiots who did not shut up they entire length of the set. They totally ruined Ocean Rain and The Killing Moon for me. I kept shooting them dirty looks, but they were completely oblivious. People like this should be locked away from the rest of the world until they're fit to exist among other human beings.

That is so funny. I was right in front of that lady. I think she was also wearing a Prince t-shirt and Prince earrings. She also had a very loud high pitched scream. I almost took the tambourine from her during Musicology. I didn't even care that she couldn't keep the beat. I ended up leaving my npgmusicclub seat because the sound was horrible. Right behind the drum set.

In response to the above quote, didn't Prince do the same thing for that MTV New York City acoustic show? Gee, I hope he doesn't still do that joke where he says "I was looking in the mirror when I wrote that." It is funny, but every night?

I think the only point of the original post was about how people who CANNOT play the tambourine and have NO rhythm should shut the fuck up!! And, I seriously agree with him! It's annoying as fuck when it's just "bells" being rung out of time and off beat!! If ya can't get it right, it (and subsequently you) becomes a nuisance, and you should put it the fuck down and find another way to jam your ass off!!
