Rep. Major faces assault charges after concert

State Rep. Eric Major, D-Fairfield, was booked at the Birmingham City Jail early Friday on assault charges brought by his former fiancee.

According to Birmingham City Jail records, Major was booked at 4:50 a.m. He was released on $1,000 bail at 9:36 a.m. He faces charges of third-degree assault.

The charges were brought by Mandy Joseph, Major said.

Major, who said he was "not very well" Friday night, released a statement calling the events an "unfortunate incident."

"I ask only that you reserve judgment until all the facts of this case are brought out in a court of law ...," he said. "I am embarrassed to be accused of such behavior. I regret that due to advice from counsel I am unable to make further public comment, but I am quite confident that I will be fully exonerated."

Major said he and Joseph ended their engagement in January but attended the Prince concert at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Complex together Thursday night. The incident happened just after the concert ended, he said.
