Fillmore Show 2/15

I won't attempt to be as detailed or literate as Temptation, but I wanted to give a few brief details from last night and let others fill in as they recover.

He started with The Beautiful Ones, full falsetto, complete with screaming and writhing on the ground. Next was Nothing Compares To U with audience singalong. When he launched into Sign O' The Times, Prince was in the balcony (next to Larry) and when he came downstairs to complete the song with a no doubt scorching guitar solo, the guitar was not functioning. On the fly the band launched into Pass the Peas while the problems were ironed out. The Question Of U/The One/Fallin' medley with guitar solos and screams. He also played, in no particular order, Take Me With U (with dancers on stage including a guy who needed the lyric sheet from Prince), U got The Look, Life O' The Party (encore), Days Of Wild (encore), Higher (with Larry Graham), Houseparty, Housequake, and No Diggity. I know I'm forgetting some others. He played bass with larry on Higher and on Days Of Wild I think.

Again in a great mood. The band was as tight as I can ever remember. The show started around 12:45 (scheduled showtime was 11:00) and ended around 3:00.

softandwet

so whoever guessed on the other thread about the show on the 14th was right, and that the first night was jamming and the second a hits setlist. how weird is this? does everyone think its gearing up for a hits tour? if it is surely he would want a mix of the two? or will it almost be like the stones tour, big arenas small clubs

so prince plays a 15k arena with hits, then the next night does a 4k club or less with jamming?

I posted this on another thread...but it seems like it should be here. My review is a bit different than the one above (I do not recall housequake...but then again I was really into the show and the music jamming that he may have and I was oblivious)..here goes..

Still tired after last night...but here goes... This would be for the SUNDAY show.

Waited in line a long time...but members got to go in first. Very organized no problems. Fillmore was beautiful and the Chandeliers were lit purple. Concert Started about 12:45 am. Not sure when we got out of there. BTW his band was AWESOME and did not miss a note!

Set list...a bit spotty, but I think I got most of it.

Beautiful Ones –Classic Song. Great rendition of it.
Nothing Compares 2 U
Insatiable
Sign of the Times –Great and made it quite funky. Definitely reworked.
Pass the Peas –This could be the Madhouse Jam that never was. Oh my god this song was off the hook.
Question of U (with some other songs mixed in...probably) – Maceo Parker Joined –Long Jam. Simply beautiful. Not a big fan of the song, but this made it worth the ticket price alone. He does that you know?
Let ’s Work –Very Funky and segues into
U got the Look –Again tore the funk off of this one
???
Soul Man
Kiss – Long and funky
Take Me with U –pleased the crowd - Said his first thank you of the evening.
Everlasting Now –Everybody was shaking their booty to this.
I wanna take you higher –Larry Graham came out during this encore song
Days of Wild –Again another song that is not one of my favorites, but he funked it out so hard, it was a standout for the evening..I was still hearing it when I got home.
America –Great as it should be. Not that long though. The crowd didn't seem too into it...I was towards the back though.
House Party
I like the way you work it

We did not stay very long after that. They handed out Prince posters (they finally did one for him) at the end. Everybody had a blast. Not too many covers on this night. It does seem like he is preparing for his hits tour esp with Sign O' the Times, America, Nothing compares 2 U and Let's work.

Not much of a review I know...I'm operating on very little sleep. It was a great show and worth every penny. Last time I saw him was the Jam of the year show in Chicago and this was definitely better than that.

Pass The Peas is a Maceo Parker song: My personal fave version appears on Maceo's live CD "Life on Planet Groove," which also features Candy Dulfer.

Well it is technially a JB's song from the 1972 album "Food for Thought" and written by James himself.

"Pass the Peas" is NOT a Maceo Parker song. It was first released on the debut album of the JBs called "Food for thought". Maceo was not part of the JBs at that time, he had quit before and started his own band "Maceo and all the King`s men".

Maceo has covered the song many times though... including the album that you have mentioned above. But that one was released in 1992, 22 years after "Food for thought".

Ooops... just noticed that Lovemachine was quicker than my bad self... but he came up with the wrong year. By 1972, the first set of JBs had already broken up and Maceo was back in the band. wink

Peace

The show was phenominal!

I Just wish it didn't start 1 1/2 hours late. On my feet in line for 2 hours, 1.5 before the start of the show then 2 1/2 more hours for the jam.

But it was all worth it. That was my 7th show, starting from '83 and Prince is just getting BETTER!

Peace

not so fast. james took credit for a lot of songs he didn't write. it's a good guess that "pass the peas" was actually written by then musical director fred wesley (oh, fred played trombone too...!)

That`s in fact accurate, and especially true for this particular tune.

Well publishing credits for Pass The Peas are actually: Brown Starks Bobbitt.. no mention of Fred there.
(that includes credits on Maceo's live version too)
