Fillmore Visitors' Guide

Big BayNPG welcome to all the out-of-towners coming in for the shows. Here are some helpful hints on the Fillmore.

-Eat a magic apple when you arrive. They are free, located in a copper bin at the top of the entry stairs. It's a Fillmore tradition - that's why they have an apple in the middle of the "F" on the logo.

-The coat check is at the top of the entry stairs to the left, just past the door to the women's bathroom. There are no chairs or places to put anything, so do yourself a favor. Check it in.

-The main downstairs bar is to the left of the dance floor. If it's too crowded there is another bar at the back of the dance floor beside the soundboard area. There are two additional bars upstairs, in the balcony and the upstairs poster room.

-Free water is located at the end of the downstairs bar in two cooler containers. Cups are provided at the end of the bar closest to the stage. Or, bottled water runs $4 a pop.

-If you enjoy music history, don't miss the poster room. Just follow Jerry Garcia (the huge picture of Jerry in the stairwell beside the coat check). The poster room has hundreds of show posters from the 60's, 70's and 80's. The mixed lineups are incredible.

-Over the door of the poster room, on the inside, is the only known picture of The Family. Not the Prince Family, the San Francisco Family. The original five groups who fueled the 1960's counter-cultural revolution: The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin w/Big Brother & the Holding Company, The Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and The Charlatans. This is the only picture that includes all the members of all five groups.

-If you're hungry (and IF the kitchen is open for these late shows), there is great food in the poster room. They have a real chef, not just a grease fryer. The fish specials are always the best. Extremely fresh right out of the San Francisco Bay.

-The sign above the front door warns, "No Insy-Outsy." But they will let you outside to have a smoke. Just be sure to get a smoker's hand stamp and go to the LEFT when exiting the building. If you go to the right, they will NOT let you back in the building, no matter how much you beg.

-This dance hall's original pre-Fillmore days included concerts by soul and rhythm & blues greats, including the Temptations and Ike & Tina Turner. Check out the signed posters from the old days above the door to the women's bathroom.

Get the most out of your visit. This place is a living museum of rock & soul. For a detailed history of the venue, check out www.thefillmore.com.
