Another House of Pancakes review

Before the concert:
Now I know what Prince means when he asks how much a NPG membership is worth? I'll give him credit where it's due - he really does look after his members during concerts.

The music club members were all let in first and it was a treat to walk past everyone else in line. It was funny to walk past Sean Lennon, who was left stranded shouting into his cell phone wondering why people were being let in before him. Even more strange was to walk past Wendy and Lisa and David Z while they were waiting to get in too - all talking into their cell phones and trying to look cool. Now, if you think about that - me getting into a Prince concert before Revolution members - that's really fucked up.

The Concert:
The gig was, for the main, an exceptional 3 hour affair but certainly not one of his best. I'm sure the club members at the front would say it was amazing (let's face it, though, they'd watch him take a dump onstage and see the merits of it) but from about 10 rows back the crowd was getting a bit listless by the end.

Highlights were funny reworkings of the lyrics for THE RIDE. Lowlights were a predicatably ordinary version of NOTHING COMPARES TO YOU. He totally ruined SIGN O THE TIMES by neglecting to play the guitar and screwed up U GOT THE LOOK by having the audience sing it. We snoozed through PASS THE PEAS again.

During one encore the horn section played a Maceo track for what seemed like an eternity and it was at this point that Sean Coombs decided that he would like to come out on the floor and watch. Ofcourse, when he did, alondside the muscle, the whole crowd decided to gawp at him and Maceo and co were ignored - not difficult. Candy can never quite get the crowd to do what she wants them too.

When Prince finally decided to come out and play it was the first few verses of Purple Rain that neatly went into THE QUESTION OF YOU - Coombs made a point to stand up on something and wave his hands to try to be seen by the man but, alas, it never happened.

AMERICA was funky but not nearly as good as the first night at Vegas the other week. Prince got alot of love in the house that night and he appreciated it. Still, he kept saying how they had to go, how they had to leave, goodnight etc and this was at least 1 1/2 before he actually did. It was quite annoying.

Prince said that a famous pop star has mentioned something along the lines that it was the 21st century and he just laughed. We all had to assume that he was talking about how he would never 'tow the line' etc. Still, I couldn't help wondering now, as I did during the Grammy's, that Prince is now officially a part of history. Sorry folks, it's the truth and you know it. The once former New Wave future funk god has resorted to playing funk standards among horn laden shows with the likes of Maceo Parker and Larry Graham - it doesn't take a genuis to work it out. You know the loudest cheer during his Grammy performance was when Beyonce came out!

Anyway, look, these are just my opinions and I think the guy is still a rock/funk god it's just that last night made thing's a bit more clearer.

Sounds like you're suffering from a bit of overexposure. If you've basically seen the show and know what to expect, then that in and of itself is going to take away some of the excitement. Just my 2 cents worth.

I can't understand why people like you bother to go to Prince concerts. You don't like funk if you don't like Pass the Peas and you don't like funk if you don't like horns and if you really are refering to Maceo Parker as "the likes of " You got other mental health issues I don't even want to get into.

I am sure plenty of people at the Grammies were cheering for Beyonce but, we will see if they will still be cheering 25 years from now or buying concerts tickets.

I respect the fact that you read the report and had to write immediately to a point that inflamed you. Now, I suggest you calm down and read again to digest properly.

As for your second suggestion...what's your point? It's not something you or I can qualify right now.

Obviously, there's quite a lot of things you don't understand - objectivity being one of them

Nothing wrong with an objective / educated review by a serious Prince fan. I am sure it was a blast and some killer tracks. I have no problem with this review.

I don't really have a problem with the review either. To each his own. But the review comes off sounding sorta like a "been there done that" type of review. And I'm saying, well what do you expect if you just saw the same show a week or so ago in Vegas???

I wasn't at either but I have seen consecutive shows on every tour for many years so I can see how he might have thought Vegas was a better musical experience (I believe the Friday one was). I alomost went to L.A. (but has a family matter) - thus sold my ticket to a friend from Detroit. I am sure the tour will kick ass and we will all hear these songs (some worse versions and some much better). I am ready.
