He did 'The Love We Make'? One of my favourite Prince tracks.
Has he done this live before?

Ahh man... i would have loved to have been there!

The set list sounds so funky. We need a report.

What's up with all the covers? Now I'm wondering if Musicology's gonna be a covers album...

And some weird choices of his own material...I had been thinking recently that the man rarely if ever does "I Feel For You" live, and "The Love We Make"? Interesting.

It sounds like a good set - different than what we've been used to hearing about, and certainly different than the same ol' "best of" shows he did at the end of last year. I find the overabundance of covers really interesting...

Interesting thought. Most of these covers are ones he hasn't done before. I might not even mind an album of covers, as long as they're not songs where we're all extremely familiar with the originals (eg. Everyday Is A Winding Road, One Of Us etc.).

Maybe he'll include his original 1976 version of Sweet Thing... That would show some balls - it's one of the first things he ever committed to tape.

hammer oh-ooooh, sweet edit

I guess everyone does a covers album at some point...it only makes sense that an album called "Musicology" would be full of songs that schooled him, hmmm?

I could easily see that. It'd probably be pretty cool too with this current band.

SassyBritches

what a sad day...now i know for real i must be slowly losing my "oomph" for prince. the setlist, by all means, looks like it would be a great show. the songsof his own that he did were great choices and the covers would be really cool to hear. with that said, i just don't feel like i missed anythin. its kind of like "oh, that's nice...now, i wonder what i'll make for dinner." a year ago i would be all about "damn, i'm sooo salty, can't believe he did the love we make and shhh. i wish i was there!" i'm just not interested...its kind of sad.

but for those who went...i am so glad you saw a great show and i hope you get to see another one tonight! have fun! smile

Most of Prince's cover versions have been boring or embarrassing, so I hope he doesn't do too many more of them...I mean the ones on the albums. He has done some great cover versions live.

It's tough to tell how good the show was from the setlist. He could have thrown some amazing guitar solos or devastatingly funky jams in there...gotta to hear the tape before I can judge.

that's not a bad setlist if you asked me. this is Prince after all. it looks like an aftershow setlist so it's made up of a lot of party tracks and a few classics.
i mean, The Love We Make and America and Controversy and DMSR - gee that should be ample no?

Mauve of The Detroit Crawl went to the Friday nite gig with April and Jo from Chicago. Mauve called the house in Detroit Saturday afternoon with this report (from the phone message she left).

***

Maceo Parker and Candy Dulfer played with the NPG.

Mauve said she new about the second gig at 2pm local time Friday, 10 hours before the start of the first gig and hours before tickets were annunced to go on sale at Will Call. April won $400 at the casino and flew home on the red eye to Chicago, missing the Feb. 1 gig.

Prince was wearing a black shirt with black emboroidery and tan slacks.

(It was an) off-the-total-hook show last night, let me tell you. Prince comes out and throws it down. First he started off by saying this is a rehearsal and they came to jam, and that's what they did.

The concert lasted 2 hours, 30 minutes.

He played maybe three new songs, I know two for sure. He played Musicology. He played girls and boys, DSMR, Controversy. He started to play America and then took it into All The Critics Love U In Las Vegas. He played The Love We Make, can you belive it? He did Shhh and he threw that song down! Prince's vocals on that was totally a disraction from JB doing the drums, because JB just threw out the drums.

Let's see? What can I say, but the man can play. They did a lot of improvising and jamming. They did a lot of the aftershow material that I had seen in Honolulu and Maui. He played Sweet Thing on his guitar with us doing vocals. He did not sing, he just did the whole thing on guitar which was so sweet, oh my gawd. Prince was just clowning, turned the mike to us and let us sing the whole thing. He had no plans on singing it once we started.

Mauve talked with Chance Howard and Chance said they are working out some new songs and they are practicing. She that since Chance Howard left THE TIME to work with Prince that Chance will not be returning to THE TIME any time soon, and that includes the March 23 gig in Detroit with Morris Day, Teena Marie and Rick James at The Fox.

***

hope that fills you all in until the second gig drops later tonight/today.

I spoke with Chance after the first Sydney gig last October at The Basement. I asked if he had a solo CD out. He said "Soon, very soon", so I hope that Prince is gonna get this brother out there, because he is very talented.
