hawai review! Hawaii Concert Review
Just came back from the hawaii concert...it was pretty much the same listing as the australian concert... sorry but it was strictly for prince fans only...die hard ones...i had FRONT ROW seat 11 and 12...very exciting in the beginning "dearly beloved..." then one hour of jazz/funk music. Now i am very openminded with music...very...but when a concert is advertised that he will perform "hits"... 30 seconds of 5 hits is not preforming hits..."when doves cry" had no chorus...all the hits lasted for a minute at the most, and purple rain was at the end. and in between that (what seemed to last forever) 1 1/2 of jazz funk sessions that lasted 20 min...felt like hours...the only song he preformed in full was "controversy" and purple rain, but not with all the words. Prince should have did full songs, then do the new stuff, which seemed ok at first...then it would go on and on and on...and on and on... People were leaving...i could see people in seats unhappy looks...i even saw one guy sleeping... I respect artists...and them wanting to do thier own things...such as bob dylan when he plugged in that electric guitar and alienated his audiences...i realize all of that,..i am very open minded i listen to billie holiday all the way up to nine inch nails/ abrasive music that is some times just noise like Aphex Twin or Squarepusher...i listen to it all, but when you advertise you gonna preform hits. it needs to be longer than a minute. Prince had a great oppertunity to play his hits and then play new songs, which were good at first, but 20 minutes later, i wanted to go into my car and pop in a prince cd. I also agree that it was probably an amazing show just like all his shows are. Some people are just chronic complainers and are never satisfied when it comes to Prince. I'm not saying he's perfect, but he's one of the best musicians live and always puts on a great show IMO. | |

He didn't perform hours of jazz funk in Australia.
He also sang full versions of most of the songs although he did alter the arrangements on When Doves Cry that removes the chorus. How odd.  When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading. | |

I bet he didn't perform hours of jazz funk in Hawaii either - what the reviewer meant was probably the bulk of the concert made up of past classics that weren't really hits for a casual fan. Of course, this is speculation until I see the complete track list  The main hits weren't played in their entirety at the HK show - they were zoomed through at the beginning.Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop. | |

love2thenines2003, your review has me scratching my head. I was at the concert & he performed almost all of the hits in full: I Feel 4 U, Sign O The Times, Kiss, Let's Go Crazy, Nothing Compares 2 U, I Would Die 4 U, etc. were performed with nearly all of their verses intact. Sure there was a lot of jamming but there were a lot of non-P fans (whom I refer to as the "Purple Rain Poseurs") having the time of their lives.

I'm slowly starting 2 just recover from last night but still have no voice...2morrow I'll write about everything but I'm with U XtrueX---not sure at which concert U were at Love2thenines but I heard most songs close to thier entirety...and what a night it was with Prince and our Princely mebership people...Love U All~

--- I have seen this happen a few times on this board. Ten people will give great report of a show and one person will give a totally different report. I think the person who wrote the negative review did'nt attend the show. For whatever reason Prince has a lot of haters who lurk on this site. | |
