Was the Prince concert the greatest of all time? Personally, I have seen many, many concerts, but Prince's concert was the greatest I have ever seen. I hope he comes back to Australia soon.

Hi David,
All I know is that the 2nd melb concert in the (acoustically superb) Rod Laver Arena would have been very hard to top by the other Australian concerts. I mean, sure he played for almost 3 hrs in Brisbane, but they don't have anything that compares to the RLA up there (nor, it goes almost without saying, do they have anything remotely as good in Sydney). The man and the band were undoubtedly at the top of their game. Combine this with the crystal clear acoustics we experienced in Melbourne, especially on the second night, and I don't see how it could be topped, other than by an aftershow in a small venue. But as far as big stadium concerts go, I don't think it could get any better for me. Anton

Hi Anton!
Agree with U completely. I actually met the architects once who designed Rod Laver Arena, the venue formerly known as the National Tennis Centre, and they said the venue was acoustically designed. I have visited the other cities, maybe like U, and none of them stack up remotely... At the end of the day, it doesn't matter which city Prince plays in... As long as he returns soon... Grunge music is dead, techno is dead (like Eminem said), Prince, the showman, lives on! The punters want to see and hear, experience, a music spectacle, and Prince provides that... RLA is a superb venue, best in Oz, and that's that, no doubt, to people in other states, save up your money and visit for the next tour...God willing...Visited the other states and there's nothing like RLA, or Festival Hall or Myer Music Bowl, or the Forum...Get real... I heard Jesus made a special appearance at the Rod Laver Arena for his one-off "Return of Christ at the Rod Laver Arena Tour".
By the way, yes, the Prince concert was the best I have ever seen hands down. . [This message was edited Sun Nov 2 4:20:34 PST 2003 by mrdespues]

I'm sure it's not the best in the world, but RLA sure beats the MCG as a concert venue!!! or even Colonial stadium. At least it has a roof. Sound is only good on the floor, up the back it is crap. Haven't been to any other venues around Australia so I can't speak for them.

Actually it's not stupid at all, although your replies have pulled things down a few notches. It's quite simple. The acoustics of the venue contribute significantly to a Prince concert because there are a lot of subtle elements to the music that would otherwise be missed if there was distortion or reverberation. It is not the only factor that makes the show good, but it is a major factor when listening to musicians of this calibre play and sing. Obviously, it would not matter so much if the act was a grunge or metal band as crappy sound is part and parcel of that type of music. But in this case, the quality of the venue made a great show even better.

[This message was edited Sun Nov 2 3:54:59 PST 2003 by davidmelbourne] Absolutely. Melbourne is the music capital of Australia. The other states have nothing except jealousy for our venues, musicians, and, dare I say it, audiences.

If "penis" is a symbolic representation of our great venues, talented musicians and intelligent audiences then yes, you would have good reason to be envious.
