I wasn't sure whether to see the NPG last night at the Indigo2 in London - as I thought I'd be listening to purple music and be pining for Prince to be on stage i.e. a frustrating experience. However, after listening to some of the boys from the Peach & Black Podcast, feeling the same way and going to see them in Australia, I thought I'd take the plunge with friends and partners in tow - and WOOF!! - my thoughts were totally misplaced....WHAT A FUNKY NIGHT!! Although the setlist was primarily "Diamonds and Pearls" (not a favourite of mine) the band were super tight and could turn on a dime. How daunting it must be to fill massive shoes on lead vocal mostly, but Mackenzie was a revelation! Vocally on-point and great front-man - a worthy choice - "Willing and Able" was simply brilliant. Beverley Knight turned up like a Tina Turner whirlwind and knocked it out the park. Maaan - she can belt out a tune - fantastic voice. Phew! "Deuce and a quarter" was one of the funkiest experiences I've had ever and Sonny T's solo? The craziest bass solo I've ever heard. "Sign of the Times" and "ICNTTPOYM" were other standouts.

All I know is that for nearly 2 hours they had the whole crowd dancing, singing and onboard. So, if you were like me and you have the opportunity to see the NPG and not sure whether to go - don't think twice - JFDI (Just Fucking Do It).

Big respect goes out to Morris Hayes who's in charge of the project. He was interviewed on Radio 6 the previous day, emphasising how it was all about the respect for Prince's music and musicianship. Well - he proved that...and some...last night.

I saw them this summer at a festival in Southampton. I was a bit reluctant to go as there's obviously a gaping whole in the band. However, they were excellent. I really enjoyed the stuff off the Gold Nigga album and they were mostly true to the music they did with Prince. It felt like it was their music and the respect to Prince was obvious. Even though they had technical problems (festival!) and Tommy Barbarella looked really p*ssed when his keyborad kept dropping out, they were tight. Highly recommended. | |

Been to the gig yesterday. Was skeptic at first and wanted to go and also didn't. My 9 year old son really wanted to go and kept asking about it. Since we visited the 'My name is Prince" expo in Amsterdam twice, he has been getting massively into Prince. He has been watching concerts, movies and listens to his music all day. He's sad about the fact that he will never be able to see Prince live any more. My wife is not "allowed" to listen to any other music in the car but Prince's. I love it. Especially since it came from himself since the expo. He wants to know everything about Prince and his songs, even the details............ Oh yeah, the gig.
So, we came back a day earlier from our vacation, and we went to Paradiso. We were near the stage on the balcony, so he/we had a good view. Our son was shy at first during the concert, but after a few songs he really started to enjoy himself. Clapping and singing to every song he knew. Since it's such a small venue and we were pretty close he also had some interaction at times with some guys from the NPG, especially Kip, Tony and Morris. I've never seen him so happy and loose during a concert. Ussualy he wants to leave early, but this time it could have taken way longer. My dream was to visit a Prince show together with my son and that will never happy, but this made up for him to a certin level. Bought him a (too big) shirt yesterday and that was the first thing he put on this morning. I think we will have to peel it off of him.
Besides Prince, The NPG are his new heroes. Seeing our son having a blast like that made us fly to the moon. Thanks guys!!!! Also for the great evening, because besides the happiness of our son, you guys nailed it. I personally missed Michael B. to make this event complete, but all respect for his replacement. Also MacKenzie did a good job. Sometimes he lost himself and didn't do the song any right, as with Thieves In The Temple, but overall he did a fine job. I loved it when they did The Good Life and gave Sonny T. the spotlight on one of "his" songs. Next time you visit Holland, the three of us will be there. Without a single doubt!!!!!!! ^ Loefie, I think I saw you and your son. I was standing on the balcony above stage left, were you wearing a ACT II tour shirt? You looked like you were having fun! Great concert, very funky! Cool that they played such a range of songs, nice to be brought back to the NPG/TGE era, but they even played from different eras, even 1999 PR and The Cross. Was nice to finally see them in the flesh after listening to them for so long as a teenager! The lead singer almost looked like he could have been Prince's son, he did bear a slight resemblence. The crowd really seemed to be feeling the funk and there was a good atmosphere, always great venue, especially as Prince first played there in 1981 and most recently in 2013 (sadly those tix went like wldfire!) Agree with the above. Go and see them if you can. The concert in Amsterdam was very funky and the place was jumping. A very worthwhile and beautiful tribute to the great man. | |
