Let's talk about our first Prince concert

On such a sad anniversiary, let's talk about something of a fond memory. What was your first Prince concert? What was it like? Whow did that energy feel that night?

My first concert of his(my first concert ever), was the Lovesexy tour, 1988. I went to the 2nd show. My uncle suprised me with tickets to go with him and one of his coworkers. I was never as excited for anything before that. The week before we went, I must have watched the Syracuse show, the Sign O' The Times concert, Purple Rain amd Under The Cherry Moon on repeat the entire week. The night of the show, I remember walking into the Capital Center in Maryland with such amazement. One inside I could see the stage setup through an entryway, instrumental music playing on the speakers. My uncle and his friend got beer, i got a soda. We sat in our seats, and I was shocked at how few people showed up. I must have been maybe only a few hundred people. It wasn't the packed house like I'd seen in videos. However, there were different cultures and ages throughout. I remember later that evening an elderly couple dancing to one of his songs.

The lights went dark, and the rhythmic heartbeat sounding bass of Sheila's drums, and that car rounding the stage, and Prince getting out of it to start the show. The stage lighting lit up and the magic happened. At the time I had only heard about the Black Album, and that night was my first time hearing songs from it, peppered with hits throughout, and the first half finishing with Anna Stesia.I was mesmerized with how much energy he put into a sh9w with such a small turnout, I think I forgot at tumes that he wasn't playing to those packed houses I'd seen in videos. He sang. He danced. He played guitar amd piano. He played basketball on stage.

That night is and always will be one of the best moments of my life. My first Prince concert. My first Prince tourbook. I was in the same space as Prince! I waa breathing the same air, seeing the same crowd. It's an experience I will never forget.

April 28, 1997, Phonex AZ! I did not even realise it was 20 years ago last week! A guy I met via AMP got tickets We lived nearly 400 miles away. It was decided I would drive and he got to my place early in the morning. We got to Phoenix at about noon and went to wait in line. It was all will call (to prevent scalpers).

All the tickets were general admission by section. We were on the floor! There were already many in line. I was worried it would mean we were far back. Time crawled! Finally, the opened the will call and quickly got our tickets and rushed inside. But we were the fist to get to the floor and stake out a claim on the bar. FRONT FRICKING ROW.

At one point a local paper guy was there and he took some photos and some statements. There was a cardboard cut out... and I told the guy to take a photo and caption it "Prince puts on thin performance" then I saw I box fan and again I said "take a picture of that....Prince's #1 Fan."

It was just Prince...well just prince! I do feel it was a little heavy on Emancipation material...but I was a great show! At one point prince knocked the mic stand and if it was not for me it would have hit the security guy (in house) in the head. I kind of lifted myself up and caught it and gave it a shove back... got a little appreciative nod from prince! Another time he was leaning over touching some girls hands...and I reached over and touched him... the look I got this time was not as appreciative. The last look I got was near the end.. he asked "what's my name" I thought of the line from "Shhh!" 'What's my name, baby? (I love you)' and I said "I love you" and he made a face.... not sure if he heard me but the answer he wanted was "Mr. Happy." At this point we let some people behind us take our place on the front.

So the show ended...maybe with "sleep around"? and the lights came up... I noticed a pick and I asked the guy to hand it to me but the girl next to me begged and he gave it to her... bummer...

and then the 5 hour drive home... what a night! I Got home like 4 AM.

a few months later HE played in town... 5 min drive... that time we had tickets... maybe 10 rows back. I met Mr Hays! I saw them bring prince inside an equipment box.. about 20mins into Larry's set we just strolled up front and there we stayed...a better show and similar set...and then an after show! and I got home at like 4 AM

Awesome story! The closest I ever got to the stage was 8 rows back at an Act I show in DC. Mayte was dressed in the black Arabian garb and sat right behind me. I had an aisle seat so when the dancers came out to get her they were inches from me. Never got to be up front though.
