Prince tribute concert this month features... John Mayer???????

Hey guys! I've visited this site several times before, mainly to get good vibes from the shared love of Prince. (After his death, I seem to have become obsessed with this site.)

Anyway, I've never posted anything until now.

I am horrified by the fact the Prince's tribute concert on Oct. 13 and this is why:

I am dismayed because Mayer has been quoted as saying a racially insensitive thing. Specifically, Mayer has been quoted as saying that he calls is private parts "white supremacist" because he is not "attracted to black girls."

Trying to be funny? Probably.

In poor taste? Definitely.

Racist? Borderline.

Can I say without a shadow of a doubt that Mayer is racist? No.

However, his statement was insensitive and ignorant.

And I'm not saying that any "black girls" are heartbroken because Mayer doesn't find them attractive. (Probably the opposite.)

I am saying that someone who makes such a statement should not be a part of a tribute to a man who was African American.

Prince was someone who championed causes for African Americans, i.e., the concert for peace in Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray and the subsequent song "Baltimore," his reported quiet involvement in paying for expenses after the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, etc.

Just on that basis alone, Mayer should not be involved in the tribute to Prince.

On an artistic level, Prince loved to nurture the careers of talented women - many of whom are African American. He was one of the first musicians that I can remember who hired women to play instruments for which they were not usually hired: The saxophone, the drums, the electric guitar, the bass, etc. He was a champion for women.

So, given all of this, why would Mayer be a part of a tribute to such a loving, caring, giving, talented man like Prince?

I hope that true Prince fans stand up for Prince, as he can no longer do that for himself. I feel that, if Prince knew about what Mayer said, Prince would not have Mayer as part of anything to which he is attached.

It would be a shameful disgrace if Mayer was allowed to sully the tribute concert to the one and only Prince.

I agree with you. I was so confused when I saw John Mayer's name on the list of all people.
