So...this was my second night of shows and the last show on saturday night....

Questloves DJ set again was remarkable. I give the slight edge to Fri nights opener but this set was packed with Prince nerd gems. He really is a master and can read a situation and flip it up expertly - his ability to read the crowd and respond is impeccable - I know people expect that of a DJ but most dont really know wtf they're talking about when they talk about what that skill actually IS. Quest has a dancers ear for it, not just a musicans ear and those different ways of hearing and responding in a DJ set can make or break a mix at any certain time. Knowing what mix to drop and when makes me totally DJcrush on questlove because not only is he a prince deep cut nerd but... its not for the sake of the nerdom that he constructs his sets in certain ways - he does it for the dancers not the dudes who stand around and try to shazam the whle set smile so again his opener set the mood and the anticipation for the show...

This night tho was SO much more crowded. I could not get anywhere near the front - on the floor - as most taller people move to the back I could see nothing but necks lolololol I had a friend who was up in the front row texting me to get up there with her but I just didnt have it in me to annoy everyone on my way pushing through to get there, and hubby was like go ahead but you're on your own I'll be upstairs.

So, off to the upstairs we went. I staked out a spot by the railing on the right side jsut to the right of the dj/sound booth - I was rt next to someone professionally shooting the show but I was behind two rows of tall people but I could get a view when everyone got settled...since I couldnt see that well there I went on FB live and broadcast some to my friends - (where I grew up in Plainfield NJ - we knew of Prince longgggg before he made it big. Theres a big connection to funk music via Parliemnt Funnkadelic whose many members and extended family lived in my hometown. Because of where I grew up and who I was around - I knew of Prince when I was 12/13 I'm 53 and Pirnce would be 5 years older than me....) Most of my highschool friends couldnt be there so since I wasnt going to be upfront Iwanted to do as much for them as possible s they could be a part of it.

So I'm holding my phone up and fb broadcasting for my friends til lmy arm gets tired smile I look over my shoulder and hubby found a sweet SEAT on the stairs where the view was flat out perfect - so i go down and sit below him and cant believe my luck that I can see so well and SIT! woooooo!

The mood was celebratory fromt he outsset and gained steam throughout the night - you could tell the past two perfomances allowed everyone to get out their grief and start to process accepting .....it was lighthearted and celebratory and felt fresh and exciting even though I was there the night before.

Someone said something about the revolution not being on princes level up thread - and i have to say thts fcking ridiculous. These musicans created with Prince a sound like no other before or SINCE. And it was evident IMHO that they are easily on Princes level as he selected them for reasons that are apprent when you see them in person. Wendy did mess up on a chorus and Princess kind of devolves the whole thing into a mess but I'll get to that....the band didnt rehears that much and they were on point and amazing and in sync with each other - the funk breakdowns and jams were absolutely spellbinding and you can tell thats where they are very comfortable.

This band doesn know how to not have Prince yet - so no shit its different but it entrely demonstrated why Prince jumped off like he did w Purple Rain and this band in particular....they belended seamlessly with Andre and Dez on the early songs and they HAD A BALL PLAYING WITH EACH OTHER you could see this night they were enjoying the shit out of themselves so mcuh that I could feel it in the back sitting on the stairs. It was joy joy joy joy.

I was disappointed Bilal was not there - he can give you Prince transcendance without parody or impersonation.

That brings me to Kimbra - I loved her - I agree her version of Private Joy wasnt on point but she did capture the quirkyness of it and she does have a wicked voice - Delerious was better for her and i liked it - I think shes a good fit for songs like that if she works on it - again performers need to be wary of parody and impersonation - they need to spend real time with the material and understand it inside out - I think Kimbra can be a viable guest singer where she messed up on style she made up for with that voice - seriously her voice is amazing.

This brings me to Princess...I love Princess OUTSIDE of the Revolution - I get why they were there (tribute bad does tribute at tribute - very meta) BUT.....I find in this instance Maya started to slip into parody and I could have done without them...she needs to dial back the mugging a little ... but they were alot of fun but they seem to get in the way of the band a bit - thats when I found the band kind of descend into a bit of messy but it was so much fun,and how can you not love Maya? and in a real live experience it didnt matter at all...so take that for whatever

Susannah was there as well as Apples and Brenda - I was glad to see them both nights....

The highlight of this night for me was the extended funk jams that they seemed to really love doing - I felt the ecstatic kind of joy when Mark and Andre were double bassing solos and Dr Fink Lisa and Dez beamed with huge smiles while they got their shine on...I LOVETHESE PEOPLE. The speak through their instruments...and they were beaming love. They did an extended funk breakdown almost on every song! It was spectacular....Wendy finally got the nerve to do more ofPrinces solos and you know what? Im soooooo glad she did - it made me burst into tears for her becaue Prince would SO LOVE WENDY DOING THAT - Prince had faith and love for Wendys abilities and when she played some of his parts I wept with sobs of joy - how else could she say goodbye? Its the only way and there was a point in the night where each band member said their goodbye their own way. Maybe it was noticed maybe it wasn't.

I would ony give an edge to the second show becuase of Bilal - but both shows I saw were transcendent and absolutely healing and it was the most fitting way to say goodbye to Prince the man & musican and celebrate the coming future of Prince the Icon and Enduring Legend.

Thank you for your heartfelt review. It makes us feel as if we were there, maybe more than videos themselves. I hope that if the Revolution chooses to have more performances in 2017, they will include Bilal.

I watched the live stream of the first show and that are not at P's level that being said I am sure they got better by the third and I know they are upset and not at their best. Andre Cymone was the man on that stage and they should have let him do most of the upfront singing. Wow

I also watched Prince at the Montrux Jazz Fest 2013 today and I am sorry that are not at the level of the master. I love what they are doing and appreciate it but if you read the reviews I am not the only person saying it. The master was missed.

I'm glad you felt youwere there - thats what I wanted - to somehow communicate the feeling of the live show - I would kill for Andre Dez and Bilal to trade off on vocals - HEAVEN!

My opinion is my opinion. I have ears to hear with and I did not think they were that good. If you do not like my opinion skip over my post. You are the one that came at me with an attitude in the first place. You can't tell anyone one that they must be positive about something they do not care for.

So I'm holding my phone up and fb broadcasting for my friends til lmy arm gets tired smile I look over my shoulder and hubby found a sweet SEAT on the stairs where the view was flat out perfect - so i go down and sit below him and cant believe my luck that I can see so well and SIT! wooooo!

They want to JAM - they dont want to be upfront. They are noticeably working through Prince not being there, thats not a reflection of their skill levels - its just something reality dealt them.

Im sooooo glad she did - it made me burst into tears for her becaue Prince would SO LOVE WENDY DOING THAT - Prince had faith and love for Wendys abilities and when she played some of his parts I wept with sobs of joy - how else could she say goodbye? Its the only way and there was a point in the night where each band member said their goodbye their own way. Maybe it was noticed maybe it wasn't.

I would ony give an edge to the second show becuase of Bilal - but both shows I saw were transcendent and absolutely healing and it was the most fitting way to say goodbye to Prince the man & musican and celebrate the coming future of Prince the Icon and Enduring Legend.

If it is true Andre didn't listen 2 a lot of Prince albums after he left, that may be one reason why Andre couldn't lead. A short time to learn lead for all those songs

They really did get it right - it felt pure that way...not contrived, not too 'managed' or packaged - the three nights were necessary for them too, they needed this as much as we did.

Thought I would post this here, too, though I'd love to talk about these outtakes on the Prince Music and More forum, as this one tends to be forgotten.

Here's the preshow set list from the Sept 3 show (order isn't exact):

The Bird Rehearsal (Prince) - Not sure if we have this. Prince trying out The Bird at rehearsal. Seemed to be making up words on the spot.
High Fashion (Prince) - Prince's version KILLS. Please Lord let a Prince version of The Family record come out!!!
Feel U Up (Prince) - Early version but different than the early version we already have. Funky as hell.
Irresistable Bitch (Prince) - Early version we have.
I Don't Wanna Leave You (The Time) - Album version.
I Would Die 4 U (Prince) - Extra long extended version.
Instrumental (Prince) - Uptempo, sounded very 1987, with Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss, slightly like It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night.

Miss Understood (The Family Outtake) - Lost classic if you ask me.
Lady Cab Driver (Prince) - Live version.
If I Could Get Your Attention (Jill Jones version)

The Time Outtake - Didn't recognize this at all, from any of the albums, including Corporate World. Sounded like it could have been Ice Cream Castles era or later.

The Bird (The Time) - Either a demo, or studio version with Morris on vocals.
Love 89 (Patti Labelle version)

Jealous Girl (Not Prince's version) - A female lead but I can't remember who. Maybe Vanity?
Unidentified Female Protege Song - Maybe another Vanity 6 outtake? Possibly Jill Jones? Never heard it before.
My Man (Jill Jones)

The Flesh Song - Not familiar enough with all of The Flesh songs to remember which one. Not Junk Music though, which I listen to regularly.
I Would Die 4 U (Prince) - Fantastic early version that has rock guitar pulses instead of the synth pulses. Completely changes the feel of the song. Amazing!
Around The World In A Day (Prince) - This might be the early version we have with the funkier bass line. Havent listened to it in awhile.
Irresistable Bitch (Prince) - Studio version.

Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden (Jill Jones/Prince) - This was peculiar. Our Destiny was almost exactly like the demo with Lisa, including The Ladder strings at the beginning, and also more strings throughout the song, but it was Jill on vocals. The "Rita Hayworth never treat you like this," line was changed to a different name, but I couldn't make it out. Then, it segued right into Roadhouse Garden with Prince on vocals. LOVED the studio version of Roadhouse. This MUST be released. Incredible.

Love And Sex (Prince) - 1984 version. That classic '84 Revolution groove you could listen to all day. Think America with a funky synth line, and an even more urgent vocal. Like "Now Jimmy lives on a mushroom cloud," kind of urgent. HOT!
Kiss Me Quick (Prince) - The version we have.

Make Yo Mama Happy (Prince) - Crystal Ball version we have.

Strange Way (Prince) - I had never heard the entire version of this until now. Absolutely fantastic song.
Purple Music (Prince) - Hearing a pristine version of this over the First Ave sound system completely gave it new life for me. Undeniable classic.
Happy Birthday Mr. Christian (Apollonia 6) - Album version.

Splash (Prince) - The NPGMC version we have.
Another Flesh Song - Didn't know which one this was.

Revolution Rehearsal - Couldn't remember the song. He called out for the band to hit him 25 times, two separate times, and then again 63 times! Awesome.

Modernaire (The Modernaires) - Purple Rain version. Kind of cool to hear this at First Ave. Looking around at the club while it was playing kind of felt like being in the movie.

Possessed (Prince) - Studio version in pristine quality. My God, we need a "new" Revolution album. So much gold from that era.

Reunited (Prince) - Hot uptempo track from 88-89. Eric and Atlanta horn stabs, spare drum machine beat, funky bass slapping. It kind of reminded me of Your Love Is So Hard, but it sounded like it was recorded before that one. The verses were sung in his lower register, in sort of the same style as High Fashion. Good God, if the estate gets it together, we're going to have classic Prince material for the rest of our time on this planet. THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A SECOND!

Rock This Mutha (Prince) - Definitely '88 era, mostly instrumental, with Eric and Atlanta. There was a phrase that popped up throughout that included the words "Rock this mutha," and "Ain't no otha." Couldn't make out the whole phrase though. The tempo kind of reminded me of The Future, but way more funky. Possibly the funkiest thing I've heard from the Lovesexy band.

Sister (Prince) - Acoustic demo! Absolutely loved it. Just Prince and an acoustic guitar.

Starfish And Coffee (Prince) - 1996 Muppets version but longer than what we have. There were parts that I had never heard before, including a longer outro that got the crowd singing along.

Girls And Boys (Not Prince) - This was a slower kind of calypso version, that sounded like it was performed by the 93-95 era NPG. Think Ripopgodazippa, with the B3 organ and such, but sung as a duet between an male and female voice. I have no idea who was singing. Interesting. Maybe it was Sonny and Nona? Who knows?

Train (Prince) - The Dream Factory version. Oddly, the quality was a little muddy which made me think Quest doesn't have FULL access to the Vault just yet. biggrin

I Wonder (Prince) - The version we have already.

So I'm holding my phone up and fb broadcasting for my friends til lmy arm gets tired smile I look over my shoulder and hubby found a sweet SEAT on the stairs where the view was flat out perfect - so i go down and sit below him and cant believe my luck that I can see so well and SIT! wooooo!

If it is true Andre didn't listen 2 a lot of Prince albums after he left, that may be one reason why Andre couldn't lead. A short time to learn lead for all those songs

Who believes this? Of course he listened to P's albums.

No, he didn't. He said, of course, he heard Prince songs on the radio but he didn't sit down and listen to P's albums. He was too busy writing and playing his own.
