I totally agree with you. Now there's tweets stating "Let's help Prince come up with a list of his most politically-charged songs 2 be played at the Peace Rally on Sunday." That just screams that no actual planning has really gone into this, at all. disbelief

Lol, it's not like people plan for riot concerts, is there a protocol? Lol. How well can a spur of the moment gesture of good will towards an unexpected full blown riot be planed? C'mon, people are now going out of their way to being asses here. [Edited 5/7/15 12:10pm]

Prince's 'RALLY 4 PEACE' says it's for Baltimore, but is it really?

By Brandon Weigel

People were thrilled to learn that the Purple One, Prince, had written a song about Baltimore in the wake of Freddie Gray's death and days of civic unrest. They were even more excited when the pop legend announced last night he would be performing a RALLY 4 PEACE this Sunday, with a portion of proceeds going to an as-yet-unnamed charity.Tickets for the show just went on sale, and though some were available for $22 (before the Ticketmaster-Live Nation conglomerate tacks on its exorbitant fees), the remainder of seats fo in the range of $122 - $497. Naturally, the $22 tickets sold out rather quickly (as of this writing, the cheapest tickets available were $197).

So let's think about this for a second: A show meant to mend the wounds brought about by economic oppression and structural racism costs more than $100 to attend? Something tells us many of the people affected by these problems, the same people the show is supposedly seeking out, couldn't afford the cost of entry.

While we're at it, tickets for the concert were only available for sale online; nobody could purchase them at the box office. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has previously said between 20 to 40 percent of Baltimore's 620,000 residents don't have internet access in their homes.

Adding insult to injury, all tickets, of course, included Ticketmaster's ridiculous fees that would have been drastically reduced if City Council had not gutted a bill on the topic last year.

[Snip - luv4u] 22 dollars is not a lot for concerts and these tickets sold quickly enough. I am sure the other prices will come down so more people will be able to go. If this concert was free you would still have people complaining.

Oh, you mean when he had an album that actually had chart impact to support? Had the momentum of the R&R Hall of Fame induction, 20th anniversary of Purple Rain, & a much-talked about Super Bowl performance, instead of 2 mediocre albums that went nowhere? Is that what you're talking about?

Right, because Prince has no history of being concerned about being number one at the bank. None at all...

Regardless of recent charts, Prince is still one of the worlds biggest touring acts, and that's regardless of how many angry orgers there are in the world. And as others have mentioned, there are far better ways of making money than one off shows very randomly when he could be making more than 10 times the money with a full tour.

.

As with a few other high ticket performances he's played on a one off basis in conjunction with Van Jones's Rebuild the Dream --Chicago, New Orleans-- his motivation for the shows was actually political, not because he needed the attention or money, but because he was helping Van raise money for the YesWeCode project.

.

And regarding yourspeculations about motives, I'm all for being skeptical when things don't add up, and certainly in the past there've been things with Prince where there was motive to be skeptical, but in each case you don't go from wild speculation to skepticism, you go from a sound analysis of facts and from THERE one should feel free to speculate if the facts don't add up. That way you don't start saying things that make you look completely silly and misinformed.

Thank you funny how people on this board forget "Yes We Code" and other charity shows.I have not gotten the impression he was not serious about his charity events and activities mainly because you do not see him babbling about in the media. I cannot figure out how easy people forget on this board that the Essences fest has only had two shows sell out completely and both times it was Prince. The Superdome is Hugh venue. I think a lot of it on this board is just plain silliness and hate.

Why waste the time. Prince could shit in a paper bag and he/she would call it a masterpiece that will change the music industry forever. Oh yeah with rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes

.

I just can't help it. I snap every so many months after seeing the same posts over and over no matter what the topic is. Maybe a cut and paste of an article here and there but absolutley no real contribution to any discussion. No wonder this place is so negative. The blind over the top gushing sure brings out the negative in me.

.

No $22 is not high. but how many of those $22 tickets were available? The other prices are ridiculous for a "peace rally concert". I've recently defended his ticket prices and forked out over $300 to see him in Detroit. However it was not for a peace rally to help a city heal. Not to mention a city that is in an uproar because of the poor treatment and living conditions. So who in the hell has or wants to shell out $122-$500? Better yet how in the world can anyone justify or defend that is beyond me. I admire and repect the idea but once again the execution is terrible.

And people on this board said that tour would bomb and he was finished. If you need cash you get out and really tour you write and produce songs. He owns his masters so he could put songs in every movie and t.v show known to man. He does not act like someone who is desparate for cash. In addition so what if he likes money dumbass wants to be poor? Maybe people who have had money their whole lives who really need to shut the fuck up. [Edited 5/7/15 3:01am]

You're one woefully mistaken sycophant, which is news to no one who has been here for any length of time. I suppose you were there in the room when Prince signed his most recent deal with WB, so why don't you shed some light for us all on the exact details of his contract? Your claim that he owns his masters is nothing but complete speculation. You know nothing of the conditions, so please don't waste anyone's time pretending.

There is a great deal of difference between the Musicology tour & these nonsensical hit & run shows. For one, that was an actual tour, with dates that were scheduled.

There's nothing wrong with liking money. However, artists who are considerably more wealthy also show considerably more class & don't talk about it nearly as much as he does.

---- Stop using whatever drugs you are on. You are the one that made the sarcastic comments about Prince's love of money. Which is a dumbass comments because he has right to get paid and pay his bills just like anyone else. Outside of his one off comment about being number at the bank 20 f ucking years ago there is no history of Prince sitting on talk shows talking about his money or flashing was of cash. Has it occurred to you that if dude had money problems he would not be doing these one off shows he would be doing a full tour. Did you forget he s old out the Superdome last year? Do you have any idea how poor Baltimore is in terms of the average income as opposed to Washington D.C if was worried about money he would be down at the Verizon cente selling out in minutes not doing a last minute show in Baltimore. No i was not in the room when he signed the deal but I remember the press releases. Do you think WB would be okay with fake press releases? Think before typing and learn something about what people do with real money.

it doesn't look like there were that many tickets priced at $22. Lots of acts put relatively few cheap tickets on sale to make it look affordable, but the average price of a ticket is still very expensive.

i'm also pretty sure the price will come down, but it will still look like Prince's intent was to get as much money as possible.

No one is shaming into doing anything since we have no idea how much of the money will go to local charities and not sure why people on this board and some of the idiot people of Baltimore (I am from Maryland) so I can call them that think he is not going to give the money to charity at all after announcing it. In addition how is he suppose to pay his band and crew if the concert was free? Don't high ticket prices mean more money can go to charity? Look around not very many artist 22.00 avalible for their shows these days. R Kelly is playing at this arena on Saturday and lowest ticket is 55.00. The market decides ticket prices people if people stop paying the price the prices will go down.

Hey, Everybody! Let's help Prince come up with a list of his most politically-charged songs 2 be played at the Peace Rally on Sunday...

Sign o The Times Dreamer Colonized Mind

All three are excellent choices. "Dreamer" in particular because of the soft reference to racial profiling.

.

I'd also add for possible consideration--

  • "Live 4 Love"
  • "Peace"

Both songs are political but ultimately positive in their lyrics, simple but meaningful catchphrases for titles--audience might be able to catch on quickly to the chorus parts--and he could maybe get nice call-and-response action going on either song.

Not sure if I'm recommending it, but I can almost see him doing something like a poignant, accoustic "I Wish U Heaven" in tribute to the Black men killed by police in recent times, like with family photos of the fallen men on a screen.

Actually that song gets right to the point from the first line. Lol. He wasn't soft on the racial profiling line either. That song was a tribute to Dick Gregory in regards to what Dick Gregory said at the State of the Black Union conference, which Tavis Smiley was a part of. Tavis told the audience at one of the conferences, I believe in 2012 or 2012? that Prince always had an interest in the social issues surrounding the Black community, and that over the years, after each SOBU conference, Tavis said he and Prince would be on the phone for hours talking about what was discussed at the conference. That was the year Prince did an after party concert for the attendees of the event, when he still had the last version of the NPG band members. I remember watching the conference on tv and saw Sheila E. among some of the attendees at that conference.

So it seems Prince always had an interest in doing his part to contribute to the the Black community, without his donations being publicized often. He did the same with the W2A tour and donated funds to charter school programs in NYC and other cities he toured during that time period.

I would not be surprised if he has images of the fallen on a screen or may have lyrical vids instead, During the W2A tour he showed images of Black Americans during the 60s at outdoor concerts.

You mean demand to be paid his money ($60,000) to perform the concert - or not perform?

Yes, I remember.

Even in that case - which history shows was really helpful for the city in the wake of Martin Luther King's assassination - James Brown was publicly criticized and insulted for demanding any payment at all. (By the way, it seems James Brown only actually received $10,000, despite being assured by the mayor he would receive the agreed upon $60,000).

By the way, the city paid for the James Brown concert to be televised free for the public. Now THAT sounds like a plan.

I'd even dare to say you can bet on it, Iris Perez attended the recording of "Baltimore" and she reported "We viewed approximately 25 bright, distinctive, thought-provoking images, an array of multimedia imagery.".

So I'm thinking there'll be plenty of messages on the screens during this concert as well.

True. One thing he could do, is get together with Van Jones and some of the grassroots organizations (re: That open letter from a Baltimore resident requesting if Prince can check them out) working with youth in Baltimore, and send some kids to coding camps. It would be a good, technical skill for many of these youth that can benefit from that training in the future.

TIDAL Teams With Prince To Live Stream Audio From "Rally 4 Peace" Baltimore Benefit Concert COMMITS TO MATCHING CHARITABLE DONATIONS FROM FANS AND SUPPORTERS

.

http://www.prnewswire.com..._cleartime

.

NEW YORK, May 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today TIDAL announced, on Sunday, May 10, 2015, it will live stream audio from Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL's Mother's Day Rally 4 Peace benefit concert, pre-pay wall, during its TIDAL X: Baltimore event. TIDAL will be the exclusive destination to hear this historic live concert. Following a month of unrest, the Rally 4 Peace is meant to be a catalyst for pause and reflection following the outpouring of violence that has gripped Baltimore and areas throughout the US. Details surfaced last week about a protest song titled "Baltimore" Prince recently recorded in response to the civil unrest. The song was written following the death of 25-year old Freddie Gray and is a tribute to all of the people of Baltimore.

The live stream will provide an opportunity for all people globally to experience the music and participate in a cultural moment that can inspire, motivate and provoke changes in our current climate. TIDAL's work to build a creative artist space made it appealing to the global superstar who has always supported a visionary approach.

"TIDAL has the ability to create experiences that bring people together," said Vania Schlogel, Senior Executive for TIDAL. "We are privileged to partner with Prince so that people everywhere can share in this moment for healing and unity to support Baltimore youth through the power of music. Our dream is to be able to provide a limitless platform for all artists."

"I am honored to join Prince in his mission to inspire through the uniting power of music and be able to offer a platform where this moment can be shared globally. We invite all to experience the music and contribute in their own way to promote peace, tolerance and understanding," added JAY Z. "Our prayers go out to Freddie Gray's family and every family affected by brutality and senseless violence."

Fans and supporters can listen to TIDAL X: Baltimore by going to www.TIDAL.com. Alongside the free 60min audio stream, TIDAL's homepage will feature a "match funds" donation button to support local Baltimore youth charities. TIDAL is also providing the opportunity to support and donate to The Baltimore Justice Fund, whose mission it is to end racial discrimination, create schools that are welcoming and safe, reduce the impact of drug addiction and eliminate police brutality in Baltimore. All can donate at www.osi-baltimore.org.

Tickets for Sunday's show at Royal Farms Arena went on sale Wednesday. A portion of all proceeds will benefit Baltimore youth charities. As a symbolic message of shared humanity and love for one another, concertgoers are invited to wear something gray to the family-friendly Mother's Day event.

Change and transformation start from the inner world...if ppl think that the ticket prices are too high for some in Baltimore, purchase an extra ticket and give it away. Don't put the burden on Prince to give away tickets.
I have to share this, back in 1993, I gave away two great floor seats to two street people in Chicago, security gave them issues and found a reason to hassle them from getting into the gig. I think that they snatched their tickets also. but, you should have seen their faces light up when they were given the tickets...

People don't even have to wait for the concert to donate. They can donate right now at the www.osi-Baltimore.org link stated in that article.
