Prince Announces 'Rally 4 Peace' Concert in Baltimore

A statement issued Tuesday says the pop icon will perform Sunday at "Rally 4 Peace," a concert at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore.

The statement says the event is meant to be "a catalyst for pause and reflection" after the recent protests and riots over Freddie Gray's death that prompted Maryland's governor to bring in the National Guard. Attendees of the concert are asked to wear gray.

Prince will also be joined by funk-rock group 3RDEYEGIRL. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Baltimore-based youth charities.

Six police officers involved in Gray's arrest have been charged in his death.

Prince is getting a lot of negativity nationwide for this concert. He is being called out as being opportunistic. Also, for supporting a career criminal. Yes, a separate issue than the manner in which he died.

That's funny. I recall some of us here were calling him out for just writing a song and not coming to Baltimore. So far everyone here in Baltimore seems really excited about it. I am guessing tix will be lower priced so that everyone can attend. Kind of like when he did those Oakland shows at $25. Also, I am sure it will be 'no id, no entry' or something to prevent scalpers from scooping up tix. It is a huge scalper city.

I agree wholeheartedly. As soon as I read "portion of the profits" I knew the good will Prince generated with announcing a "Rally 4 Peace" concert would be dampened by criticism that was using this moment to get publicity. I wonder if only a porition of the proceeds is going to charity if he's paying for the expenses related to the concert on his own instead of having a sponsor to underwrite it. Not to mention that it's on short notice, that would certainly affect the logistics of organizing a free concert this quickly. Since a portion of the proceeds will be given to a charity, it would be good to disclose which charities will receive it. With that said though, Prince gets major props for doing thsi concert in the first place because Baltimore as a community can use the healing that comes from being united by music.

I agree, those in the community whose lives are affected by those everyday ills in Baltimore, needs the healing.

Can't wait till Prince gets here 4 Sunday.

We need the music to literally shock away the negative out of the atmosphere here in Baltimore and 4 us to consciously invite the Love, the precursor to Peace, to flood this area with Love+n+Peace.

Folks will talk crap no matter what is done. Prince should have the concert recorded and sell the DVD to support a charty for Baltimore. Prince can do what he wants and I'm glad he is supporting this issue...a black life was taken and America needs to know and remember that this kinda crime goes on all the time.

Don't u want to come , 3121. It's gonna be so much fun, 3121. That's where the party be, 3121. Y'all can come if u want to, but u can never leave!

1) Prince doesn't need the money.

2) You don't raise money by playing free concerts

3) This is an opportunity to get others to feel like they're contributing to something as opposed to just doing someone by yourself.

It doesn't look like he has anybody involved that is sponsoring the event, so that means he may likely be covering the costs. This type of arrangement isn't ideal, as generally you'd like to have these things covered by others, but as you mention, the last minute nature of this makes that a challenge. He does still have a few days, if he had smart people working for him he'd have people trying get some last minute supportive corporate donors involved. That way more money could go the NGO's they decide on supporting.

It's the press release that states:

"LiveNation also says other industry superstars are expected to attend."

.

Not known yet who else is performing but I bet there's plenty of "stars" who like to participate!

Ummm...Beyonce has been voicing her opinion about Baltimore right?! JayZ?

.

In case "Baltimore" gets released through Tidal this makes more and more sense...

I doubt that Beyonce or Jay-Z would be playing if they are not the headliner. I know this is a biased site but realistically nowadays Prince would open for them. I know this will offend people here but Beyonce would be opening for noone except for maybe her hubby nowadays. They may attend but I don't see them performing. I hope they announce the other artists before tix go on sale. I would like to go but not buying just for Prince. If we get a decent lineup of artists(at least 1 other major or 2 decents smaller ones to make it worthwile) though I will try and go.

Prince doesn't open for anyone else either so I don't get where you are coming from.

Now it is getting interesting. "Portions" of the proceeds will go to charity. So how much of your $500 will go to charity and how much will go to Prince? If I lived in Baltimore, I'd want to know that. Looks like all the rich people will be in front and the poor are left out again. sad

I got the two 22 tickets =76 total not sure if there are still any left but I was at my computer literally at 5 sharp lol and the loading request did take some time as another poster mentioned. Also, the tickets have a delivery delay so if you got them online or any other way you won't be able to print them until 5/9 which I think is hella stupid. The tickets are really expensive but I got the cheap ones this is my only shot in seeing Prince once in my life! lol

Prince is one of the worlds biggest touring draws. If ever he would be in need in money, all he'd have to do is another Musicology style tour, and he could probably charge way more than he did back then. This would be a completely silly way to go about that. Its just common sense.
