I was going to wait on this because I just got 6 hours sleep and have to leave for work in an hour, but, here goes:

I've seen Prince 9 times now (88, 93, 3 times in 97, 00, 02 & 04) plus seen and heard recordings from shows from every tour.

The band just does not compare to any of his previous bands.
Hannah was sloppy, even my wife (her first show) noticed.
Ida was decent, but not great.

Donna surprised me, thought she was better than expected.

Josh (I assume it was Josh, Prince didn't introduce him) SUCKED big time. His keys on Nothing Compares were... YUCK.

Liv was great, barely heard the other 2 (not introduced) singers.
Prince barely played guitar and never really "smoked" it, didn't play bass, didn't even have a piano. When he played the synth along with the sampler sets was the only time he seemed to be "jamming". I dug that.

And then there's the sampler set. Look, I know we've all talked back and forth on this topic and I've heard recordings of sampler sets but seeing it live really turned me off. Of the other 8 times I've seen him, 7 of the shows had piano medleys then at musicology that was changed to an acoustic guitar medley. These were some of the best parts of the shows and the most memorable to me. Now we have a sampler set that really is Prince Karaoke. That's the only way to describe it. Why? Can the band not play those songs? The other bands I saw played these songs and they sounded great. If I want to hear a sample of the record I can do that at home. Sure, Prince jammed along to them on the synth and sang along with them but they're still samples instead of the band playing. This from the real music, real musicians guy?!? Plus, the audience around me seemed oblivious to the fact that the band wasn't playing (or was quitely strumming along with the sampler). The stage was pretty dark during the set and it was hard to see the girls weren't playing the music then he brought dancers on stage to obscure them even more. I swear everyone around me had no idea that they were listening to recordings of SOTT or When Doves Cry. It's just gross. And disappointing.

I expected a hits show and even though it's not what I want it's not why this show ranks at the bottom of the 9 I've seen. It's simply that every band I've seen play with him is of a much higher class than this one and I'm baffled that Prince or any of his fans find the sampler set to be acceptable in any way. The only way the sampler would be cool is if he toured as a one man show. That might be interesting. As it is the only thing I come away with is this band isn't good enough to play these songs so he has to sing along to recordings of the classic tracks.

I'm happy for everyone who wants the hits. If I see Bowie I want to hear all classic hits with NOTHING new. I get it. But anyone who compares this band with any of his old bands or defends the sampler set is... well, I question your taste.

That said: It was still a Prince show. I'd rather see him do this than just about anybody else. The Louisville Palace sounded GREAT, just like it did in 02 (the BEST Prince show I've seen). Prince looked great. His voice was great. I loved the hell out of hearing more new songs than I expected (Clouds & X's Face!!) The 2 WAV files in my email was FUGGIN AWESOME!!! Thanks Prince!!!! I might even see him again on this tour. I love Prince and anyone who wants to put me in the hater camp because I have an objective opinion that they find too negative can basically suck it. For those that haven't seen him, I'm sure you'll have a great time. Everyone seemed to be loving it. For the veterans, know what you're getting and set your expectations appropriately.

I'm off to work...

[Edited 3/15/15 9:42am]

Very Nice review..honest and objective. I completely agree with your thoughts, I will see him no matter what but this band just isn't as good as previous bands. Although the show in Seattle 2 years ago was awesome.

Thank you for the descriptions & all & I'm happy for those who got to attend, but how hard is it to get an accurate setlist in correct order? Yeah, they're dicks with cell phones & texting & whatnot, but writing down a song title on a scrap of paper takes all of 3 seconds & you have the memory preserved for yourself & other fans.

i was at 2nd show saturday. i didn't take notes 'cuz that's not what i paid to do. check princevault.org. it's quicker than bitching.

that said...this was my tenth, and by far my least favorite show. i still had a blast. my 8 year old son got to drink shirley temples all night and see his first show and he loved it. i have nothing to complain about.

one thing...if the songs are prince's children, somebody needs to call family services on the man. there's a bunch of nappy rugrats getting neglected while this setlist is getting spoiled.

Not what you paid to do? Aww, have I offended your delicate sensibilities? Talk about bitching. You find it that difficult, do you? Normally, following a concert, setlists are readily available here. In this forum. And yet we have people quibbling about their order, or people too lazy to transcribe them. Or people, such as yourself getting pissy when someone is curious about them. Stay classy.

I find it funny that all these 3rd eye girl haters are boys. That band may not be his best ever, but they are tight, beautiful, and very talented. But most importantly, Prince likes them, and we all know he keeps a tight band. Stop the hate!

I checked the set lists over at princevault and they are the only ones that seem to be accurate, at least for the show I was at. It seems like the first show of the first night was the most generic. The other 3 shows at least got one unique song.

This whole time when people were talking about a "sampler set" I thought they meant he just plays samples from songs, like a mashup, I didn't realize they meant he literally PLAYS a sampler so he is just singing to a backing track. Most of those songs in the sampler set he played most of the way through, but I swear I remember the band playing along with the sampler on When Doves Cry and a few others. Other times they were just kinda standing there doing nothing

I am just curious and not trying to start a full blown argument, but how could you be a lover of Prince music and say racist things like, calling his children (music) a bunch of nappy rugrats getting neglected? If you feel bamboozled because you thought Prince's was actually white, don't blame him blame it on your racist ancestors which is clear that you have adopted their attitude and moral beliefs. I love Prince's hair, his skin color, and loved how he looked when he had large lips and the perfect nose. The funny thing is, whether he looks white or black, his powerful song and talent is still the same.

The only time I've seen them live was Sat at 11pm and let me tell you, Hannah was SLOPPY. My wife noticed too, so this is not a sexist opinion.
Donna was on point she surprised the hell out of me. She smoked her guitar more than once.

Ida was okay, but I've seen & heard her do much better on bootlegs, must have been an off night.

Josh sucked.

Liv was great, couldn't hear the other backup singers.

And of course, Prince was perfect, even if he didn't go into guitar god mode, he's still Prince.

As for Prince liking them, in my OPINION, Prince likes the image of having a young all girl band.

wow. peedub's gettin' it from all sides today...complaining because those that attended a concert did not take the time to take notes regarding the content of said concert in order to preserve their memories for your benefit, you come off as entitled. and no, the use of uppecase letters does not tire me, as you can plainly see i don't use them. and no, i am not in search of a thank you...

indeed. i read your review and probably couldn't add anything to it. i was at the ona show in 02, also; and it was my favorite of all the shows i've seen, too. i had a great time and would gladly do it all again. bottom line, seeing prince at the palace theater is a good time. no regrets.

I apologize if i diverted this topic to a different direction, but I haven't seen Prince in 10 years, and I came to this site because his best fans are (were) here, and they give the most honest and precise reviews. What I didn't expect was to find was racial undertones here. I was a member of Prince.org in the late 1990's to the mid 2000's and not once had I read racial remarks towards Prince. I have returned because he started his HIT & RUN Tour in my hometown which I was not able to attend because I don't live there anymore and for other reasons. Now I am waiting patiently for the next tour date. I was very shocked and saddened to see these types of comments, because I am a black woman who happens to whole heartedly adore every single thing about Prince, and these comments are possible a result of a dislike for his current "afro." It is amazing, how one little thing about someone's physical charcterisitic can reveal how a person truly feels about other races. And on that note, WHERE ARE THE REVIEWS!!!? I am having Prince withdrawals and I haven't tasted the water yet! lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol

That's what I was wondering! Sadly, when Prince tours Europe, the concert forum explodes with tons of reviews and photographs... Not so much for the U.S. anymore.

Yeah, I can relate. The shows I went to last March were so tight on security that I could only find one photo from the performances, much less a boot. I didn't see any cellphones out the entire night. Of course, it was a venue that held only 1,000 people. On the other hand, the HitnRun concerts that followed in Europe had lots of photographs, boots AND video afterwards. Either people are more sneaky at those shows or the security is more lax.

look....some people equate race specific language with racist language. if i crossed a line, i sincerely apologize (i am white, by the way). i could give a shit about prince's hair. i could give a shit about prince's ethnic lineage. i was attempting a joke based on prince's statements that he equates his songs to his children. the crux of the joke being that if his songs were indeed his children, then some of them might appear rather nappy (read unkempt) as they have been neglected for a considerably long time. one possible explaination as to why there are no reviews might be that of the 2500 or so people who were at the show, maybe only the four or so that have posted here are members at this absurd fan site. this website's membership is not indicative of typical prince fans.

I am having Prince withdrawals and I haven't tasted the water yet! lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol

look....some people equate race specific language with racist language. if i crossed a line, i sincerely apologize (i am white, by the way). i could give a shit about prince's hair. i could give a shit about prince's ethnic lineage. i was attempting a joke based on prince's statements that he equates his songs to his children. the crux of the joke being that if his songs were indeed his children, then some of them might appear rather nappy (read unkempt) as they have been neglected for a considerably long time. one possible explaination as to why there are no reviews might be that of the 2500 or so people who were at the show, maybe only the four or so that have posted here are members at this absurd fan site. this website's membership is not indicative of typical prince fans.

Thanks for the explanation, peedub.

Really? It's appreaciated when people post setlists, but it's not a Prince.org duty.

It is always appreciated when folks have taken the time to post setlists.
