That's very true, and it sounds like most people had a great time. I know I still would have too, if I'd have been at the show. But I think he could play Purple Rain, Kiss, Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Raspberry Berret, You Got the Look, Sign o the Times, The Beautiful Ones, Little Red Corvette and 1999 and any casual fan would be more than happy. That leaves another ten or so songs, instead of doing as many covers he could do rarer album cuts, like Anna Stesia or Condition of the Heart or The Ballad of Dorothy Parker or anything I said in the above post (or new songs!) and turn casual fans into enthusiasts.

Just got back from NOLA and Prince was off the chain. Seeing him and Niles perform together was heaven. I wasn't going to go at first but got a hook up on a hotel. I'm dead tired but had great time.

What's a concert thread without photos?

I will write a full review later. I've seen Prince over a dozen times, but this is the first time I've seen him since the last time he played Essence ten years ago. We were up top and the sound was good. It was bass heavy for the previous acts, but it seems like they finally got it fixed during Prince's set. Up till about Little Red Corvette, we were thinking this might be the best concert we have ever seen....Then it started to lag atleast for me. As previously mentioned, this was atleast partially due to the audience. It was the Essence fest so you weren't going to get the rock show. He was also pretty much limited to two hours. The first main stage act was scheduled for 8:20 p.m., with Prince scheduled at 10:30 p.m. These things never run on time so Prince didn't even start until around 11:15 p.m. If it would have run on time he would have had that extra 30 minutes to play some of the non hits. Honesty, I don't know why they didn't start the thing at 7 p.m. to give more time to compensate for delays. Like I said earlier I will write a full review later. I really liked 3rdeyegirl. They rocked, the horns were nice in small doses. I could have done with out the back up singers and dancers. Still a great show, the best I've seen this year

I was there and this is exactly how it came across to me. The problem wasn't with him playing all hits, it was that they were done in a very overblown medley. You would get 1 verse, 1 chorus, then on to the next song in the "megamix". Many of the hits were done in "reloaded" versions, with no exciting new elements, and no energy of the original versions.

Nile Rogers and Chic played their solid set of all hits (including covers of a few that Nile produced and co-wrote, including Get Lucky), and it was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Nile had such a natural winning personality and rapport with the audience. He presented himself as a human being, grateful to be there, and he presented his music with class, style, and FUNK.

Any true funk fan was in heaven during Chic. As for how the true funk fan would feel about Prince.. I can only speak for myself, but I left about 3 songs before the end judging by the setlists posted.

Now keep in mind, my seat was on the floor.. I paid some dollars for that ticket.. Suffice it to say I had gotten my moneys worth with the absolutely stellar Chic set, and so had no problems exiting early from the overblown and bland Prince performance.

Something I haven't seen mentioned yet, there was a steady stream of people leaving from the floor during the last third of Prince's set.. I watched them leave, he watched them leave, and I joined them as "The Bird" was starting.

I'm glad I saw him, it was Prince I was there to see, he is a legend and a treasure, but he is at a phase in his career where he's phoning it in.

I saw him several times this year and last year in small venues where he was anything but phoning it in. In a show this big, well, I would expect something geared for casual fans. I know that he is also doing great and moving performances of new songs or revisions of old songs that become new. I think this is a riveting time in is career. A venue with a thousand people, aim for that next time.

Turns out Prince showed up for 1 song with Liv.. So.. yeah, is that phoning it in compared to the aftershows of yesteryear?

It was definitely the right choice for me to skip that aftershow.. If I had stayed up until 5am and witnessed first-hand that 1-song cameo.. you'd have gotten even more truth from me that you already have

Yes, some House of Blues aftershows I saw were good but not amazing. One was great, another less so. In Chicago. But Prince at the DNA Lounge last year? At the Fillmore this year? At an aftershow in December 2011 where he played until almost six? So good, absolutely mind-boggling. I opted not to come to New Orleans because he seems to need to warm up, do a few shows in a place to get going. I wait for the second night if I have the luxury of a choice.

But then it is 2014, who can blame them starting to leave; old arse The Bird; they done heard a zillion times. Like I posted earlier 19 songs out of the 22 of his songs were from the 80's. (95% mind you). All those 80's songs were when he was with Warner Bros. and got played on main radio not on oldie stations.

I think some folks left early because they want to get ahead of traffic. I see the same thing at virtually every sporting event and concert.
