errr, so your complaint is he played an amazing setlist

.

Yes, how amazing it is to hear Purple Rain and a sampler set. <snore> The rest of it -- intimate venue and three shows in one night -- are cheap attention grabbing ploys, to show what a special snowflake he is. Musical value? ZERO.

.

Now go listen to the 1988 Trojan Horse aftershow, which took place mere hours after a full Lovesexy show (i.e. one where the band didn't just perform an astonishingly varied setlist, but also danced on a huge stage): listen how the IMPROVISE on the spot, playing fresh, new music. It's so good that it means the recording from that night still is a highlight.

.

These three gigs? Bleh. Throwaways.

You can't seriously expect an almost-56-year-old man to perform as much in one night as a just-turned-30-year-old man did. That's ridiculous.

I also have to laugh at those who complain "He's playing the same set he did last week in another country!" It's like those people think Prince is playing for the same crowd everywhere he goes.

I was at the other side of the planet for a few weeks and completely unaware of these happenings, despite requests to friends to be informed.

As usual P does not disappoint and delivers standard quality the last few years...

While still recovering from jetlag I did not even feel sorry when seeing the news about shows yesterday.

Also: what purpose do these few shows serve?

The albums are only due later this year. There is no momentum to be built or no momentum actually built for anything.

So it was just cashing in?

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

You can consider lucky being away from it all biggrin

What is beyond me are the THREE consecutive gigs in a row in a tiny club. Don't get it. Why didn't he searched for a 1500-capacity club and played a full lenght gig instead?

Money is a factor there.

Small clubs do not generate that much yield. Bigger venues might be more economical but harder to arrange at `short` notice.
