Yes the setlist was unbelievable biggrin

I think this festival crowd mainly expected the funky/poppier side of Prince, so some were obviously disappointed, others didn't get what they expected but still revelled in the excellent musician ship and then there were people like me who absolutely LOVED it. I can't remember the last Prince show I was at where there were that many "Oh my fucking god, I can't believe he's playing this - moments". Kinda ironic to get that at a festival show, with a perhaps not so deserving crowd. This would work really, really well at a small club - I guess that's what he's doing in the U.S. - and I hope a lot more of those of you, who would actually appreciate this, will get to experience something similar soon. it was amazing biggrin and also a bit bold to take up such a large part of the entire festival budget and then put on a show like this wink

Not much to add, it was a good concert for a fan and if you love guitar. For a festival crowd it was the wrong set list. I really enjoyed it but missed the funk and the expected party at the end. Prince really played the socks of every one and every thing and seemed to really enjoy himself. We had excellent sound and vision which was too cool. Unfortunately the crowd was too big and quite unruly. Very scary actually and it felt completely out of control. Too bad.

.

It just shows how tough it is to get the setlist right. It's pretty much the same same set list as Stockholm another festival gig which was received really enthusiastically.

.

Personally I love what he has done live with 3rdeyegirl, delving deeper into his catalogue of songs and having the confidence to play new songs. That is where the energy comes from in this show, as he is pulling out all stops to have this material received positively.

.

A similar type of overhaul is required to reinvigorate NPG too, the NPG shows since Chicago have been more Prince Allstars Soul Revue with way too many covers rather than Prince shows.

Prince is a musician not a lifestyle.

The no-photo didn't work. The Danish people are not as law abiding as the Swedish are. In Stockholm two days earlier, the no-photo worked very well. Unfortunately for the festival, this made Prince leave before he could end the concert properly. He gave a no-no sign a few times towards people taking pictures or recording, and said somthing short about showing respect another time. He performed a good concert anyhow, but to me it seemed that he got a bit sad for that reason.

Geez. If that got him sad, then he's an idiot! He's a celebrity. People pay a lot of money to see his concerts. They want some pictures as a souvenir, to remember it. He should just get over it. The no photos plea in Stockholm was preposterous really. And people were stupid enough to applaud that shit. And he's an ass for playing not even two hours and two back to back non 3rdeyegirl shows in Montreux, where people paid 140 € per show, but does 2 and half hours and 3rdeyegirl shows at festivals.

I agree...In smaller club venues I understand the whole "no photo" rule...But arenas, stadiums and festivals? P should just allow the photos and keep it moving...

Disagree! There's nothing so annoying as to have your view of the stage blocked by a wall of mobile phones. As Prince said in the Melkweg 2 years ago: This is a party, not a photoshoot.
Applause from me too! clapping

Probably a little hypocritical of me I know, but if a musician makes a plea for no photos, then it's only manners & respect to oblige. If never dream of taking a photo at a Prince show, cuz I want to dance & absorb every little detail. In saying that, it's always nice to see/hear photos & footage from gig u can't attend. Thats just me being a wee greedy git lol

Well, you have a Michael Jackson avatar-pic and call Prince an idiot... Are you in the right forum?

The problem is not that people take "some pictures". They stand completely still, holding up a phone, looking into the phone. They don't participate in the concert. They are contraproductive to the concert.

I support Prince's no-photo policy.

No, I'm pretty much sure I'm in the right forum. My MJ avatar pic didn't prevent me from buying 2 140 € tickets to see Prince in Montreux, so fuck off. You claim to be a fan since '83, but you only posted 15 times on prince.org, are you sure you are really a fan?? See, I can make a stupid nonsensical comment too.

That is bs. The majority of people making pictures still "participate" in the concert, one doesn't exclude the other. And it wasn't like they asked to go easy on pictures, they asked to make no pictures at all and that's ridiculous. He stands on a stage and thus should expect people to make pictures.

Your language is like this:

"And he's an ass"

"he's an idiot!"

"so fuck off"

That speaks for itself...

So to the photo-question. If you have like a few hundred people taking photos, filming or whatever, how exactly do they participate in the concert and making it a better experience for the audience and the artist?

The no photo has been used by the majority of artist since decades back, it's nothing new. The difference is that it's much easier to take photos and film and more peopel do it and less people, dance, shout and party during the concert. Can't you see it?

If you don't like the no-photo rule you still have an option not to go to the concert. Your not obliged to pay hundreds of euros, it's your own choice.

Yes. He is an ass. I gave him 280 € to see the same (shortish) show twice on the weekend and on the third day which was a monday, when many people weren't there anymore, because they had to get back to real life, he played a totally different and longer show, one where he finally picked up a guitar. If you you have 3 high priced shows in the same city you'd except all of these show to be similar in length and content, so as to not make people, who can't attend all shows, feel cheated. If you expect them to go to all 3 overpriced shows to get the full picture then your an ass in my book. And then to go around and playing much longer shows and doing that what people excpect of Prince (to play his guitar) at festivals, where the tickets were cheaper is a douchebag move too.

And when you object to my avatar pic, then you're an ass (or more a idiot) too... as that has nothing to do with me criticising Prince. I paid money for his shows. So I've got every right to criticise things that suck. Regardless of an avatar pic.

As for pictures. People do not spend taking pictures all the time. And while taking pictures and in between taking pictures and videos you can still sing and shout and clap and dance along and contribute to the mood. But this discussion is moot, because really, you people, who support this ban are all hypocrites... everyone of you likes bootlegs, likes to see pictures and videos of the shows you have and haven't attended. But when you're at a show and someone takes a picture you feel annoyed and feel a need for a "no photos" policy. I don't buy it for one second. The next time there is a concert you haven't been too, you want pictures, videos and a bootleg.

For you fans out there, my reflections from the Smukfest.

This was the place where Prince played:

http://www.dr.dk/NR/rdonlyres/A1074B04-91FC-4262-8103-869B5D73CD75/4084178/8b97eed0082944fe86a16410c6bf6865_20120812215843L10.jpg

It was very difficult to get good places, it was extremeley crowded and when people at the same time left from the act before and others wanted to get a good place for Prince it was quite a disaster. A lot of people didn't get to see at all since there were around 40-50 000 people which is by FAR too many for this type of place: in an opening in a forest (!). Even though I arrived late, I managed to get a good place - in the middle, 20 meters back, and got a good view the complete show.

The danish papers all report about the owercrowded festival and that the producers should be ashamed of that.

He sang great this night, he did a few rare songs and he let the songs take their time and there where not so many "snippets".

Some, not all, of the songs, not in order:

He performed the first verse of Better Place 2 Die/Moonbeam Levels, which was fun for us who are into Princeology.

Electric Chair was short, divided into two parts when he sat and played at the piano.

Plectrum Electrum was really great. Throughout the concert he played more guitar and Donna didn't get to the front of the stage as many times as in Stockholm which means that Prince took the front and did his guitar work, and we alla know who is the better guitar-player... (no offense at all).

Sign of the Times was in the shortenede sampler set plus the band playing was long and groovy. Prince did a bass-solo, taking the bass from Ida, which he doesn't do so much anymore. Before SOTT was a full version of Housequake.

Ida, whose hometown is Aarhus where, the nearest town, got more space and performed a really good bassolo at one point.

She's Always In My Hair and Let's Go Crazy were slow versions, as they use to be.

Bambi, Take me with U and U got the look. Nothing special with that.

The love we make, as he usually does it nowadyas.

The Max is cool nowadays.

Colonized Mind was really brilliant with extra text, probably having extra meaning because of the no respect for the no-photo.

Purple Rain and Nothing Compares 2 U were really heartfealt, long versions really giving them feeling and of course he got the audience in a great mood. Both songs not my favourites, but this time, it was obvious that he was putting a lot of feeling into these two songs.

The intro was completetly different from Stockholm, he started really hard in Stockholm but in Denmark it was instead a very beautiful new piano song that I have not heard before, and the band filled in. Really wonderful. It went into The Breakdown then into (as I remeber it) Diamonds and pearls.

And he did his new songs Fix Ur Life Up, Screwdriver basic versions.

He started with his couloured guitar which I think was better because it works better in a large venu due to the clearer sound.

Funknroll was not good at all. I don't like it either. It was better in Stockholm.

After around 2,5h the concert kind of drifted into lower focus and tempo and he ended the concert after only one encore. I'm convinced that it was the photo-thing. It was kind of cut off.

It was a really great concert - both choice of songs, emotional load and energy, but a proper Prince never ends a concert without a good party, and that party didn't really occur, which I think was because of people taking pictures. Too bad for them...

Thank U 4 thr review and all the colors and the feel ofthe concert u added...appreciated Ur time and space that u took to share essense of prince experiance...value U sun

Was it good 4 U?
Was I what U wanted me 2 B?

If it's not alright...it will B
