Did anyone else see the tears on Prince's face when he was singing So Dark? I did not recognize all he told about the four boxes ... did he find them in the hotel room? what they are?

I didn't see the Dark performance, but he talked about the same thing during his Purple Rain tribute to Claude Nobs. He said there were four books in his hotel room that had all the performers who had ever played the Montreux Jazz Festival and he recognised all of the performers in the books. He was basically saying that the festival attracted a high calibre of musician - musicians who looked forward to playing there - and that was due to its founder, Claude Nobs. I was Sir Lancelot, I didn't want you to be misled.

The Purple Rain tribute to Cluade was surprisngly powerful and emotional. I've said what I've said about the rest of the show -- an absolute blast and so happy to be here!

FYI, it was Purple Rain, and he was talking about 4 books. Claude Nobs left 4 books in his hotel room, containing all the artists that had played at Montreux. Prince said that is was to Claude's tribute to bring all of those artists together,...

The four books he talked about are these books:

I've seen them several times and it's impossible that he recognized every performer. Impossible. So that was more a figure of speech, I guess. His tribute to Claude Nobs was still nice and classy.

Nice 2 mention I think: Prince did a stagedive in the public at the beginning of the concert. he went to the other side pretending wanting do the same thing, but he didn't. Had a big grin on his face.
Great concert, Prince in a very good & playful mood - apart from the more emotional 'Nobs' part.
Personnaly I found the presence of Damaris a bit annoying. But well, maybe I'm just jealous

I saw the rehearsal at Paisley Park and felt the same. She's just up there free styling and wailing her arms, it adds nothing to the performance...and she's waaaay to tall to be standing next to Prince. TRUE BLUE

I saw some clips from Montreux and agree about Damaris. More evidence that Prince does not always hire people for their excellence in the job, but sometimes for personal reasons (especially girls). Seeing the awkward Damaris just reminds me how good Mayte was as a backup dancer. I saw Mayte in a clip dancing a scene in Westside Story, she's actually a very good dancer. Thanks for everyone's reports on the concerts!

Agreed. Purple Rain was beautiful. And I don't even particularly like the song... I was Sir Lancelot, I didn't want you to be misled.

I was at this show in Montreux and now I'm just listening to it on my pc...
I'm more and more convinced that it was a great show (though I've read some Montreux reviews who dismissed the first two shows as "routine" and "lacking passion")
I was stunned by the Horns Band (11 pieces I guess...)...the whole band and the female vocalists were perfect, tight, clever and Prince was the great master of ceremony and conductor...
In a famous jazz festival like Montreux he did pay a great homage to the great jazz bands of the golden age of jazz with interpolations of soul and r'n'b classics...I'm sure Claude Nobs would have loved it!!!
Yes, he didn't play any guitar or keyboard and this could disappoint someone but we've seen his ability and skills as a music player in a lot of concerts in the past: so this time I'm very glad that he was just a sort of "James Brown and His Band" on stage.
So, in my opinion, lucky are the ones who had the tickets for the second Montreux show too!
