So cool...the sweet harmony of Prince's powerful trio of backup singers performing together as one. I'm sure they will tear the house down with their beautiful voices. Thanks for posting!

Somebody has got to report if Shelby does her "Put Your Hands Up" routine. I am absolutely dying to know if this is something Prince forced her to do as a designated crowd flunky overkill assignment, or if it was something Shelby desired to do, and Prince just allowed it. I am continued to be baffled, befuddled, irked and confused that Prince would have such a talented singer engage in something that went from dull crowd hype to Self-Parody and among the most cringe worthy moments of any Prince concert not involving Tony M.

If I lived down there, I'd go; for $15, it's worth checking out.

My questions are:

• How can they bill themselves as the NPG without Prince?
• Does he have a hand in this?
• Which "other fellow brothers"?

^ Hi Chocolate1. I would love to see those 3 perform as well if they came to NYC. I think on one of the Spreecast shows, DrF said that even though Andy Allo and those 3 female singers of King are independent artists, that Prince still manages them and that they are under his umbrella. So I wonder, like you, if it is the same when those 3 NPG ladies (Elisa, ShelbyJ and Liv), perform at an event together, minus Prince?

I said plenty times, those 3 ladies need to form their own siinging group, even if they are managed by Prince when they perform at events without him. I just did. Thanks! I swear everytime I hear that phrase 'Check your email' It reminds me of R. Kelly's wife in that show 'Real Hollywood Wives' because she says that phrase all the time with swagger...

Good because you really didn't miss a thing. But if the NPG power trio (Liv, ShelbyJ and Elisa) come to the NYC, we will have to bring a church fan, a white handkerchief to wave, you know, like the church members do when they 'catch that feeling', especially with Liv and Shelby's powerful voice in one place. I'm just sayin'...you just have to be prepared.

Oh come on. Many artists have been doing that for years at concerts, no biggy. It hasn't taken anything away from Shelby's talent. Besides, she sang solo and sung duets with Prince, during many of his concerts, so it wasn't like she didn't get a chance to showcase her talent while performing with him. If she does a show in NYC, with Liv and Elisa and if she tells the audience to 'put your hands up', I will do just that as she raises the roof with her gifted voice.

i use to be on the fence about shelby by reading people rude comments on here about her but lawdddd glorrrrrayy when they came 2 charlotte shelby bright smile and lovely voice ate that stage up.she smile just draws me in . we both stay in charlotte i have yet 2 run up on her anywhere though but i am so looking 4ward 2 the day i do.elisa has a lovely voice as hell loved her first solo cd that prince helped produce.liv sung a solo when they came 2 charlotte her voice is lovely as well. so if they bring it 2 charlotte or surroundings i sure will be there. i have always wanted shelby 2 sing a version of mavis staples come home

That is what people do when they party. Are you one of those people that sits on their butt at a concert? Plenty of bands and artist hype of the crowd. I honestly wonder if some of you don't get out much to even know what should go on at a concert.

New Power Generation and Cherrelle at the April edition of ATL Live on the Park

Shanti Das and Marlon Nichols delivered one of the most memorable musical productions to ever take place at ATL Live on the Park. Brought to you by Gentleman Jack and Monster Products, the April edition of season four featured performances by members of New Power Generation (NPG); the legendary band known for touring with music icon Prince and 80′s R&B diva Cherrelle.

Hosted by Lifestyle Specialist Kenny Burns, Members of New Power Generation and Cherrelle gave the audience an electrifying show that only seasoned artists could give. NPG artists Shelby J, Elisa Fiorillo and Liv Warfield each took the stage performing past and current music. Shelby J ripped open the set with “How I Know Love” followed by “Use Me Up”. She later closed her dynamic set by performing an original song about her home state titled “North Carolina” that features Anthony Hamilton. Elisa Fiorillo performed next by taking the audience back to the 80’s and performing fan favorites such as “Who Found Who” and “On the Way Up”. She later wowed the crowd with her hit single, “Share it With You”. In addition, five members of the NPG horn section played and brought the house down with their solo performances.

R&B diva, Cherrelle hit the stage next and immediately brought the audience to their feet. From her dance moves to her crowd interactions, Cherrelle proved that her music and talent is timeless. The 80’s star performed her most notable duet, “Saturday Love” with Quinn of the Jukebox Band and her signature hit “I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On”.

New Power Generation’s Liv Warfield literally murdered the stage and closed out the evening on a high note. Warfield performed hits “Why Do You Lie” and “ I Decided”. Warfield’s raw, hard-hitting vocals were reminiscent of the iconic singer Tina Turner. In closing, all three NPG artists, Shelby J, Elisa Fiorillo and Liv Warfield performed “Que Sera, Sera”.

Notables in attendance last night included Big Krit, Chaka Zulu (Ludacris manager), producer/DJ Eddie F, Comedian Joe Clair, Professional Drummer Lil Jon Roberts, Grammy Award-winning producer Big Jim (Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis), TV producer Wendy Eley, and Atlanta’s true music aficionados!

ATL Live on the Park was hosted by Lifestyle Specialist Kenny Burns, who kept the crowd going last night in between performances and DJ Trauma, who played the best in R&B, soul and funk. It’s truly a shame when you attend a show and you think, “How in the world is this event going unnoticed by the general public?” Such is the fate of Shanti Das and Marlon Nichols Atl Live In The Park Series.

Once a month they bring talent into Park Tavern located in Midtown Atlanta overlooking Piedmont Park and on April 16th, they managed to conjure up various members of the New Power Generation aka NPG including performances from Shelby J., Elisa Fiorillo, Liv Warfield and even a surprise appearance from Cherelle.

Even though Shelby Johnson aka Shelby J is probably the most recognized of the group, she opened the evening with a stunningly exquisite vocal performance of intense fluidity and superb jazzy vocal runs. Elisa Fiorillo turned on her 80′s charm and shocked the crowd with her smooth silky southern sounding sway. Then the crowd was treated to a surprise performance from Cherelle who exploded on the stage with high energy that got everyone’s juices flowing. Then the night was closed out by Liv Warfield with her infectious energy that lit up the room and her powerhouse vocals that put the cherry on top of the evening.

As for the event itself, the evenings are perfectly balanced and are a masterful mixture of mingling, music and good times. Starting with appropriate DJ hosted music and melding into the performances where each of the three main performers shared a band filled with NPG players. Each came to the stage to perform for about 20-30 minute waves of their own material and each performance seemed handcrafted to showcase their best material which led to a full evening of exceptional music from beginning to end.

Atl Live In The Park is essentially designed for maximum fluidity and even allows good access for media to the performers, photo opportunities, and elbow rubbing throughout the evening. The event is fairly underground but those “in the know” frequent the showcases every month.

Atl Live In The Park draws many hip hop artists and celebrities and any given night can offer a wealth of photo opps. With any member of NPG in the house on this particular night, it was a Prince fanatics dream for those that are heavily involved in the musicology. And from the various people we spoke with during our visit, the monthly get-together is always littered with celebs and folks you should know making it the perfect networking event for funksters and neo-soul heads.

That being said, the live sound was perfectly mixed and balanced and not too loud. About the only complaints we had for the evening was from the DJ booth where the music was too boomy and bass heavy making the sound muddy and at times the DJ was a tad too over-chatty in the beginning of the evening. But as a host, there was plenty of good crowd participation and he strung the evening together well from performance to performance.

Now that Funkatopia is aware of this gathering, expect to see more of us each and every month, because Atl In The Park is one of those events that you hear about the next day followed by “You should have been there.” And with ticket prices only being $15 per person or $70 for a reserved table, it really is silly to be anywhere else.
