me too!! It was a zoo in there, and I was kinda glued to the front of the stage (good problem to have, I know). I did meet quite a few orgers, which was a real treat.

Thanks! Yes i think Little richard has issues with the artists that came after him and somewhat "borrowed" things from him.. Its understandable though.. He never got the recognition or Money that he deserved so.. I dont mind his rants.

As much as I love Prince on guitar - he inspired me to pick up the guitar myself and probably still is the greatest musical inspiration for me - he is nowwhere near Hendrix. The looks and influences are clearly there though.

They were 2nd encores! And I'm sure that they were there to get the crowd moving, which they did. And, unlike other sampler sets, they gave way to absolutely incredible jams. In other words, they were f@$%ing awesome.

I have a slightly different feeling about the Sampler sets...

(IMO) I think that Prince see's himself as a DJ during that part of the show..

He knows that he cant honestly play everything in his Catalog but there are a few Jams that it Would be a crime to come to a Prince show and to leave without hearing .. So,

I think he see's it as him being DJ Rashida for a moment and reminding everyone in the room that he's EVEN MORE than what he's already given them live. "Real Music by Real Musicians" is still a valid statement (IMO) because the dude on the sampler made all those grooves himself.

Now the day he stops playing live and its just him and a sampler, thats when i'll be DONE for good with Prince.

I am so glad he did NOT play Purple Rain or the sampler set in Vancouver!!

That would have ruined the shows. I am so glad we got the untainted version of what he had envisioned for this tour, before he had to succumb to the pressure of the fans who did not get it.

But I would have been excited to see Dolphin and Colonized Mind.

yea after thinking it over it isn't THAT bad. it's just that, he has a brand new band that kicks tail. why can't he play 17 Days or When Doves Cry live with them? i'm sure the sampler set is better live than on paper. lol. i'm just sad he didn't bring the show to philly or the new york area.

If you just replaced the synth with a guitar doing the same runs, I can't hear it in my head sounding great. My thoughts is it'd have to go through the "Let's Go Crazy" treatment or something.

And if he does, I'll hate on everybody who go to go to that set!

lol yea this makes sense. on second thought keep the sampler set or whatever. but add stuff like The Ride, I'm Yours, Little Red Corvette, Villanova Junction, Chaos and Disorder, Anotherloverholenyohead, Empty Room, Spirituality, and Calhoun Square.

Man. What a crazy whirlwind of Purple Madness in the last couple days!

I attended the late show at the Showbox in Seattle Friday night, and just got back from a quick jaunt down to Portland to catch the late show there.

Unbelievable.

I really never thought anything would even rival my 2 aftershow experiences in 2002 (Roseland in Portland- right where got to see him again last night) and 2011 (Republiq nightclub in Seattle), but this tour really has something special to offer Prince fams and yes, just fans of great musicianship in general. Sure, there are all always going to be a few hardcore fans griping about particulars, but so far, from my experiences (which include a day in-between to hear my restaurant co-workers tell me feedback from patrons that were having food and drink before and after the shows close by), it's generally been the "casual fans" that have been grumbling. Y'know....about not hearing 1999 for the ten thousandth time.

I'm not gonna front, I had a real hard time early on justifying these ticket prices. The sticker shock initially got to me until I really thought about the potential. Prince in crazy small venues playing stripped down, funky rock 'n roll with a talented and gorgeous all-girl band to rock by his side. The potential was there.....but it was tough taking the gamble, especially since the cities I am close to were so early in the tour (and I'm certainly not made of money.)

The Org forums was going to be a big factor in this equation, too. Will there be enough purple people early on to report back the little nuances to make the experience top notch?

I went for it on the late Seattle show on the second day, and held off for a bit longer to think about doubling up both shows that night. I thought about it for a couple days. Then my friend in Portland kind of forced my hand by picking up a ticket for me on a whim of nostalgia. He dangled it in front of me as an opportunity to meet back down at the Roseland where we watched Prince put on an amazing aftershow 11 years ago ( http://prince.org/msg/12/...#msg_89416 )

Man, I had to do it! I figured these 2 outtings would be enough to tide me over during this tour, but when the setlists and rave reviews started coming out of Vancouver, I started thinking about maybe dropping some SERIOUS coin and take in maybe one more of the shows. Judging from the Vancouver reviews, this was the Prince show so many of us having been dying to see!

Thanks to tips from Vancouver-show thread, we got to the Showbox in Seattle by 5pm for the late show, trying to work out the Green Room angle. It was pouring rain (of course), but we stood out there for about 2 hours just kind of networking with other late show peeps that were doing the same as us, and getting things done early to get the preferential seating tickets in the Green Room.

We got to meet Donna's hubby as he went through the early seat line giving out some wristbands, and he told us to look out for him later for the late show. We opted instead to get out of the rain and get some food and drink on in Green Room (which ended up being the better choice, as there were no wristbands given out for late show that night)

I can't tell you how seamless the system was at the Green Room in the Showbox (opposed to the lack of this kind of system in Portland at the Roseland). Kudos to the Showbox for giving a nod to the early bird die-hards and keeping things organized and efficient. It was well-worth the extra money on food 'n drink (I could have done without the specially requested vegetarian-only menu ), but it was nice to just kick back, stay warm and dry and relax knowing we would be in the first group to enter the venue. Sat with 4 great Prince fams that really made the experience enjoyable and were fun to have close to us when we got to the stage in a mad rush!

Aaaannnnddd to the stage WE GOT. We were the first 30 to enter from the Green Room, right behind the 15-20 people that had tickets to both early AND late shows. We were quite literally 3 bodies from the front of the mic stand and well......I near 'bout wet myself. I'd been that close to Prince for the second half of a practically unannounced after show (prior to Musicology resurgence), but to a full-priced, well-publicized tour with Prince at a small venue for ALL to enjoy? Get out.

The show was amazing as you can imagine and have heard from the various reviews and setlists posted!!!!!!!!!!!

Highlights:

-The amazing guitar work of Prince. You can never get enough and the guitar RARELY left his hands. Bad. Ass.

-The Jimi Hendrix homage with his outfit. Very cool.

-Making eye contact a couple times, as this big ol' boy belted out the lyrics to "I Like It There"

-The famous Showbox marquee being cleared of all other dates and artists except a big "PRINCE" right in the middle (with 3rd Eye Girl added the second day) First time I've ever seen such a thing on that marquee!

-The playing of Alphabet Street (which was a surprise from what I had already read from the other set lists)

-The absolute icing on the cake for me: not only playing Hot Thing on the sampler set (and oMG Shockadelica), but then grabbing the bass and jamming on it! That will always be remembered- definitely outta this fan's wishlist!

Observations:

-The girls seemed just a bit "whooped" for this show. Just my humble observation, but especially compared to the show I would see after a day of rest, 3rd Eye Girl seemed a bit on the tired side (as expected really), but showing it just a bit more than expected. It was interesting watching them watch Prince in a way that seemed to say, "Damn, how does this guy keep ticking?" LOL

-The Showbox didn't have the barricaded area up front, so up front was a little crazy, as to be expected though. The Roseland in Portland just made it such a better "up front" experience with the cordoned off section for wristband holders.

-A lot more complaint murmurs than I heard in Portland. I know these are generally casual Prince fans looking for a setlist of only hits, but from my experience, I heard none of that after the Portland show.


This show seriously kicked our asses and by the end of the night, the wife was already asking how hard it would be to get a last minute ticket for her to join us in Portland!

Since I've succeeded in writing a novel here, I'll save part 2 for the Portland thread!

This one is now on the books, but won't be forgotten!

They were outstanding, and the sound was impeccable. It really was.
