Prince,
Dallas is less than an hour away from Austin by plane. You should definitely come to Dallas! It has been far too long :-)

Pretty please rose

Ladies and Gentlemen of SXSW, Samsung presents: Prince

SXSW is extremely excited that Samsung will bring Prince to this year's festival for an exclusive performance and will offer SXSW Platinum and Music badge holders chances to see this debut performance at SXSW. There will be two ways to secure a spot for this special concert: the first is for Samsung Galaxy owners in Austin for SXSW to click here for details about the Samsung Galaxy Experience.

The second way is through a ticket drawing for SXSW Platinum and Music badge holders beginning now. To determine which SXSW Badge holders will be admitted, SXSW will conduct a ticket drawing, which will grant entry for Platinum and Music Badge Holders only. No other credentials are eligible to enter these drawings.

Click here to learn how to enter the SXSW drawing for a chance to see Prince at SXSW 2013.

As a matter of principle I resent these exclusive, last minute shows for the chosen few. It has something arrogant about it.

It makes sense for him I suppose: gets paid the big bucks for a one off, tries out his new band, keeps the mystery alive. And he can hang around Andy Allo.

If I was anywhere near Austin I would try to get in. sigh

Yeah it is kind of annoying, but I'm not mad at him.

He does not have a record label that can front him money for real marketing strategies, or have a real marketing department that can devise proper PR strategies.

He cannot get radio play for his current music.

He eviscerated his own presence on the internet over the past 6 to 7 years due to multiple site domain changes, on again/off again sites, and relentless legal challenges/cease and desist to youtube postings (which oddly enough ARE today's radio).

If there is anything Prince needs for his new projects is exposure. And as much as we may like it, he is not going to get that by playing in some hole in the wall club for die hards. Or even in stadiums where he performs his "hits for the last time."

SXSW has become the premiere new media/new music/new film festival... it will give him great visibility. Will he do anything with it? *Shrug*

But he needs to be there in order to keep the buzz needed for he seems to be trying to do with his music these days.

...every night another symphony...

Do you know for certain he wasn't there// Iwas there... And if he sucked as bad as orgers make him out to be there would be no tribute

I do believe Drfunkenberry explained on Spreecast last night why he thinks Prince wasn't at the Carnegie tribute. I believe DrF explained that it was a choice between appearing on Fallon to promote the 3rdeyegirl band, as well as the upcoming April West Coast tour vs attending the Carnegie tribute, and in the end, Fallon apparently was the choice. Which kind of makes sense for promotional purposes, since appearing on Fallon gave him a much, wider audience to promote his new band and upcoming West Coast tour. But the latter is just my two cents.

Fallon and the tribute weren't on the same night were they? I suppose just because a bunch of people want to pay tribute to you, doesn't mean you're obliged to attend. Typical Prince!

Well, many of the artists/musicians Mr. Dorf paid tribute to, didn't attend their tribute. So this is not unusual. The tribute is over, doesn't make sense to cry over spilled milk. The tribute is over and done with, and this thread is about the SXSW concert, so probably best not to go off topic before one of the mods reminds us about that.

Exactly, Having been in attendance, i feel if Prince was there it would have def taken away from the performance.. Esp if he was in one of those box seats looking down on the stage..

Before anyone gets up in arms, I believe Drfunkenberry made it perfectly clear that those were his thoughts and wasn't speaking on Prince's behalf.

I don't think Prince has made an official statement as to why he wasn't in attendance.

Which is exactly why in my post I specifically stated why he ('he' as in reference to Drfunkenberry not Prince), thinks Prince might not have shown up at Carnegie. Just DrF's thoughts not Prince's.

I think it's great that Prince is performing there.

And it's good to do it as the closing act. Because during the festival, it's the less known bands that deserve all the attention. This is their change to play themselves in the picture.

And Prince his name will get media attention.

If he wants to sell his songs, this might be a good way to get media attention for the 3rdeyegirl website.

Friends are currently in Austen and writing a blog about it.

He is a DJ and organises great parties and events. He alwayse goes to Austin & Miami (in 2weeks that will be very busy too) to scout new bands for his events.

He's excited because in the same hotel as Iggy Pop and also saw his performance.

He's also enthusiastic about Sohn and the Thermals.

What kind of bands did you hear about? Any new stuf that is exciting?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Prince And ATCQ To Close Samsung’s SXSW Galaxy Show

Keith Murphy Posted March 15, 2013

This years’ South By Southwest music conference is carrying on its tradition of showcasing the best in new music. So far, the buzz-heavy Austin, Texas throwdown (held Mar 12–Mar 17) has featured the likes of Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt and throwback boombap MC Action Bronson; Vancouver rock duo Japandroids; red hot Compton rhyme darling Kendrick Lamar; and acclaimed indie-rock vets the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. And there are upcoming shows by multi-platinum punk-pop outfit Green Day and music’s current blue-eyed soul golden boy Justin Timberlake.

But the one name that has everyone talking is Prince. The larger-than-life music icon has been confirmed to play at SXSW on Saturday, March 16. There are already reports that the Purple One will be bringing a 22-piece band as well as his rock-leaning female backing trio 3rd Eye Girl to the big-ticket event, which is being thrown by Samsung Galaxy. And the fact that hip-hop legends A Tribe Called Quest (!!!) will also perform at the Samsung show jumps out like a music fan’s ultimate cross-genre dream.

But as usual, SXSW is bigger than the music. Technology also plays a huge role in the festivities. For fans who may not be able to gain entry into the Prince headlining gig (if you are lucky enough to hold SWSW Platinum and Music badges, worth a whopping $1,595 and $795, respectively, you are in), you can roll the dice by purchasing the Samsung Galaxy—price tag $699—by activating 11 Samsung-sponsored goodies from local vendors. The golden ticket then just MIGHT be yours.

Samsung freebies includes a sandwich from Rotisserie & Press (1502 San Antonio); a slice of pizza with two toppings from Brick Oven Pizza (1209 Red River Street); and a scoop of frosty treats from Amy’s Ice Cream (1012 W 6th Street). Also, Galaxy owners will be able to click TecTiles to receive free rewards including some of today’s biggest music acts, among other gifts.

Prince's 7 Most Memorable...nt History

But this is all about Prince, right? The man has been on an interesting run as of late. The influential superstar—who is behind such funk-rock classics as Dirty Mind (1980), 1999 (1982), Purple Rain (1984), Sign O’ The Times (1987) and Diamonds and Pearls (1991) and the 2004 comeback album Musicology—has re-embraced the Internet, dropping a series of well-received tracks ranging from garage rock pop (“Screwdriver”) to acoustic soul “That Girl Thang”). And just in case you haven’t been paying attention, there’s also his show-stealing appearance at this years Grammy’s just as a presenter (the blinged out walking cane will forever be seared into our memory); his shocking live performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which ignited the Twitter universe after Prince used the Roots’ Captain Kirk’s guitar as a Frisbee; and a Carnegie Hall tribute to his indelible music featuring the likes of D’Angelo, Questlove, Elvis Costello, and Chris Rock.

And don’t worry. If the SXSW price is too steep, you can catch Prince on his next world tour kicking off on the West Coast in mid April.—Keith Murphy
