Interview was nice, but underwhelming.

I had to laugh at how the girls said Prince found them (paraphrasing) through YouTube and MySpace. I thought Prince hates the internet and doesn't go online. lol

Maury Glover's (Ch 9 reporter) remark about how Prince repeated, once again, after he'd finished jamming, the tired chestnut about being 'so funky he can't sleep with himself' was a groaner. Prince is a witty, funny guy...he should just be spontaneous, and stop the overused, scripted 'witticisms'.

The girls seem nice. I really like Hannah. Good luck to them. I also loved that yellow couch.

[Edited 1/16/13 19:50pm]

Funny you say that. I recognized that couch from a furniture store in downtown Minneapolis. Don't know if the store is still there, it's been years.

Hoping the Paisley Park shows this spring and summer comes true!

From Twitter:Anna Gulbrandsen ‏@annag02 Airhorn sound effect is to hip hop as the thunder sound effect is to #Prince. Tonight's "soundcheck" was a jam session so WTF is tomorrow?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. The scripted, overused lines he uses as punctuation are tiresome. If you disagree with me, fine with me. But I think his propensity to do that is lame. (And yeah, I know he's been doing that kind of thing for ages..doesn't mean it doesn't come across as silly sounding. At least I think so.)

"After months of flirting with the Dakota Jazz Club, Prince has booked a rare three-night hometown engagement this week at the 300-seat nightspot in downtown Minneapolis."

"The shows have been in discussion for more than a month but were confirmed only late Monday night, Dakota co-owner Lowell Pickett said."

I don't understand the connection you're drawing between my opinion on Prince using stupid scripted lines in concert and how these shows at the Dakota came about. confuse

Opener is part show, part rehearsal, all cool

  • Article by: JON BREAM , Star Tribune
  • Updated: January 16, 2013 - 11:30 PM

A sign outside the Dakota Jazz Club in downtown Minneapolis needed just one word Wednesday night. Prince opened his three-night, six-show run Wednesday in what was officially billed as “soundcheck/drummer audition.”

Leave it to Prince.

Minnesota's biggest music star plays his smallest advertised gigs in his hometown in front of 275 people at the Dakota Jazz Club in downtown Minneapolis, and Wednesday's opening show turns into essentially a rehearsal.

Officially, it was billed as "soundcheck/drummer audition." That was accurate, to be sure. It was also the first Prince show in the Twin Cities to start precisely on time -- ever. And it was arguably his jazziest local effort.

Color this 80-minute set as cool as it was curious.

Announced at lunchtime Tuesday and sold out in an hour, Prince's three-night, six-show stand at the Dakota is his first high-profile Twin Cities affair since July 7, 2007, when he pulled off three performances -- at Macy's downtown, Target Center and First Avenue. Prince promises that each night at the Dakota will have a different approach.

Wednesday's was an all-instrumental rehearsal. Prince didn't sing or say anything to the crowd and spoke infrequently to his musicians. He preferred to conduct by pointing, snapping his fingers or tapping his feet. He spent most of the night on electric keyboards but picked up his guitar for two extended excursions.

The 54-year-old sported a modest Afro, round sunglasses, a dark shawl and silver-lamé shoes, with wedgie-style clear heels with blinking red lights in them -- custom-made, high-end adult shoes like your kids might wear. He bowed to the fans at the beginning, encouraged them to clap at certain times and blew a two-handed kiss at the end.

Police officers were stationed outside and inside the Dakota. The Princely rules required patrons to check cellphones at the door. With tickets costing $70, this was a mostly middle-age crowd that included Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith.

At exactly 8 p.m., drummer Ronald Bruner started playing by himself. Five minutes later, Prince and bassist Andrew Gouche joined in. Bruner and Gouche have worked together of late with Chaka Khan. Gouche joined Prince last year, but Bruner got the call for an audition last week. Six horn players and pianist Cassandra O'Neal also participated as Prince found different grooves and moods while running Bruner through his paces.

There were echoes of George Duke, Jeff Beck and even Steely Dan. At one point on his piano, Prince created the beginning of his 1987 hit "Sign o' the Times," but he soon switched into a different groove. Prince tested Bruner -- and smiled at and applauded for him often.

Thursday's shows -- billed as a late-night vibe, for up to $150 a ticket -- will feature a different drummer. And the rumor for Friday's "surprise" gigs -- up to $250 -- is that Prince will unveil his new all-female backup band.

But with Prince, the rumors are more common than his performances in his hometown.

Twitter: @jonbream • 612-673-1719"

Also read on Dr. Funkenberry's Facebook that Kanye and Kim K. were at tonight's show but dunno if that's true. Kimmy is a fan though so it wouldn't be surprising...

Sounds like a pretty cool show. Just an all out jam session.

Shocked he actually went on stage exactly on time! That LA fiasco really did get to him. Good!

Next 2 nights at gonna be interesting. I hope the surprise guest is not Andy Allo as that's kinda lame even though I love the girl.

Introducing his all new all girl band will be way cooler!

Finally, crack head Kayne and clueless Kim... What the hell are those jokers doing in MPLS?

Small Room, Big Sound: Prince Rocks The Dakota Jazz Club

arrow http://kstp.com/news/stor...9329.shtml

Small and mighty is the best way to describe Minnesota's native musical legend.

Or ... Prince.

His 11 PM show (the second of six this week), billed as a sound check late Wednesday night, had rhythm, funk and plenty of movement.

"Movement" started off the show with a brass band in a New Orleans style march leading Prince through the crowd, with his baton in tow -- beginning downstairs and parading through the audience upstairs at the Dakota Jazz Club.

From there, the North Minneapolis native and his band -- which included a drummer said to be auditioning for a full-time gig, a young woman playing the keyboard, a bass player and a six-piece horn section -- sailed through a six-song set and single song encore that ran about an hour.

This show was more about "Prince the Bandleader" than "Prince the Performer."

He barely said a word -- a "psych" here after a familiar chord teased a single, a "thank you" there to the adoring crowd -- but nothing was sung. The legendary performer spent most of his time playing his signature guitar or piano, and conducting the ensemble through it's half-dozen jams.

Most of the songs included the entire band in a jazzy, fluid jam. The others were more fusion and funk with the horn section dismissed offstage.

Solos were applauded, riffs boogied-to, and from the response of a crowd... a drummer won a job.

The "psych" chuckle wasn't the only act of misdirection in the show. After their lone encore tune, Prince and his band appeared to be set to launch into a second. Initially playing over a recorded drum-and-bass line, the band slowly departed one-by-one as the song played on. Eventually leaving the recording -- and an applauding crowd -- in their wake.

Fans of all ages packed the sold out venue, despite the Dakota's brief issue with their online ticketing system Tuesday.

The announcement of Prince's impromptu jam sessions at the Dakota Jazz Club came yesterday morning. What a surprise for Minnesotans who have been hoping for something like this for a long time.

You can thank the band Fun, known for their popular hit, "We Are Young" who rented out Paisley Park.

"Prince tried to out-funk Tower of Power and he did a good job," says Paul from San Diego, who flew in especially for this show.

"Anytime you get a chance to see a legend perform at a venue like The Dakota, you take it. This is the top performance I've ever seen and he didn't sing one note," says Russ from Minneapolis.

"It's hard to sit down. This show was meant for standing and dancing," says Tess from Roseville.

There are a total of six open rehearsal shows as Prince preps for his next tour, each scheduled at 8 PM and 10 PM Wednesday through Friday.

Wednesday, January 16 shows were titled "Sound check." Tickets are $70. These shows included a drummer audition.

Thursday, January 17 shows are touted as "Jam Sessions." Tickets range from $100-$150.

Friday, January 18 shows are billed as a very Prince-like "Surprise." Tickets range from $200-$250. Friday's show will be standing room only on the club's floor.

Important note from the Dakota: "The kitchen will be closed all night and there will be no food available for purchase. Cameras and cell phones will not be allowed inside.

If you are caught with a phone, you will be removed from the venue by security, no exceptions*. A cell phone check will be provided at the door."

*This happened near our table and it wasn't pretty.

**Our photo was taken after the show.

Prince at the Dakota: Night 1, Set 2 recap

Posted by: Chris Riemenschneider

arrow http://www.startribune.co...54581.html

Oh, how he loves to mess with us. The most glaring example of Prince’s playful attitude toward his hometown fans in either of his two sets Wednesday night at the Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant came midway through the second show, when he uncharacteristically fumbled around on guitar for a few seconds by himself, toying his way into an intentionally clumsy bar or two of “When U Were Mine.” Just as anyone the crowd recognized what would’ve been that set’s only true Prince song, though, he pulled the rug out.

“Psych!” he yelled out with extra snark value.

This fun if wee-bit frustrating moment doubly exemplified Wednesday’s shows. It demonstrated how playful each set was to the core; I seriously don’t know if I’ve ever seen Prince smile/smirk so much through a performance (which is saying something for a guy who so evidently loves to play to a crowd). It also reiterated that these first two of six “rehearsal” sets at the Dakota -- and there’s a chance there could be more, too -- were not about the “hits.”

Like the 8 p.m. show -- written up here for Thurs... newspaper -- the 11 p.m. concert started right on time. That was probably the most abnormal thing about the night. Each set started with a bang, too, or rather more of a rolling beat: The alleged test-drummer Ronald Bruner took the stage first to play a masterful, New Orleans-style second-line beat. Prince and his six-man horn section proceeded to march their way around the entire club (both levels) as if they were strutting their way down Tchoupitoulas Street. This gave everyone in the crowd the chance to note how well the gold cane Prince was twirling like a baton matched his gold-lamé shoes, with clear heels that lit up with flashing red lights like young kids’ safety sneakers. From the get-go, things were up-close and dazzling, if not entirely personal.

So, Prince didn’t communicate with the crowd during the second set, just like the first (outside of his “psych”-out). Even more than the early show, the reaction to his quiet approach in the late performance was mostly a resounding, “So what!” Each of the 70- to 80-minute sets presented Prince at his most musical, if not verbal. And he spent a lot more time improvising on guitar in the second act, alternating between P-Funk style space jams and Pat Metheny-like, rocky jazz noodling to a couple parts that were unequivocally Prince guitar workouts -- “Housequake”-like joints, though not specifically the parts of “Sign o’ the Times” offered in the early show. His ace horn section lead the way through a medley of old soul numbers at the end, too, including Aretha Franklin’s “Dr. Feelgood.”

All along, the Purple Yoda played Jedi mind tricks with his band members, much the way he messed with the crowd in that "When U Were Mine" instance. When the tenor sax player nailed a part, for instance, he humorously pushed him backstage toward the dressing room as if the fella were showing off too much. When another horn player hit a high note, Prince flipped up the hood up on his white, draping sweater as if to hide (the elegant hoodie was his second of two outfits for the night, by the way). And if there was any doubt ex-Chaka Khan backer Bruner didn’t already pass the test, he gave the drummer a dramatic fist-bump toward the end of the late set to signify his approval.

Perhaps as noteworthy as the musicians who played on stage Wednesday were those who didn’t: A couple of his backup singers were in the crowd and are expected to get up with him Thursday -- which almost certainly means Prince’s mic will be turned on, too. A limited number of standing-room-only tickets were sold last-minute at the door Wednesday, and more will likely be available Thursday. The Dakota's calendar is open without any performers' names all weekend, but no one seems certain what to make of that. After all, the dude does like to mess with us.
