Isn't it beautiful? According to some orgers, he did this version back in 2002 or '03, but this is my 1st time hearing it like this - it brings out the more melancholy emotions of the song/lyrics. And I could just melt in the guitar solo.

I just saw this...never heard the slow version and I'm loving it--those who got to see it in an intimate venue were lucky. smile

I was at the Saturday night big concert in Sydney (Acer Arena) and think it was a good concert, and so I've been thinking the crowd at the afterjam at Ivy must have done some things to put Prince off playing.

Here are some things that the crowd at the Sydney Ivy afterjam show did that probably pissed P off:
- People in front of the stage had their backs turned to Andy McKee as he warmed up the crowd. These people were talking loudly to each other and ignoring Andy.
- People didn't sing along to the songs played by DJRashida, nor were they dancing. They were just standing there expectantly. (eg 80s music eg Cameo - Word Up).
- People didn't sing along to the Prince songs played by the NPG band (eg Partyman from P's Batman album).
- People stuck their camera/phone in P's face and stood there trying to get pics. (And don't turn your back on him so you can get a pic of yourself with P behind you. This is highly offensive.)
- People kept trying to video record the show with their camera/phone.
So if you are lucky enough to go to the Melbourne afterjam, try to avoid doing the list above.

I should mention that because Australia has a small population, the "popular music" radio stations mainly play 2 types of music - easy listening (eg Celine Dion or Kylie Minogue) or Aussie rock (eg Cold Chisel or Jimmy Barnes).
Australia does not have a soul/funk radio station, nor an rnb/hip hop radio station, so the music played was not known by the crowd - eg Aust radio played the Indie Arie song about her not looking like a model, but not "brown skin" and I've never heard any Jill Scott played on the radio here,
So the crowd didn't know these songs. (During my life I have never been a radio listener cos the music played is ordinary and not worth listening too. I wish we had stations that played P, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Lenny Kravitz, Erykah Badu, Joe, Angie Stone, but we don't.)

I should mention that most of the people at The Ivy were not hardcore P fans. They didn't recognise Partyman from the Prince Batmam album 20 yrs ago.
Mainly because the tweet for the show first went out on The Ivy twitter page and so The Ivy members (twitter followers) were most likely to get tickets, because they were the 1st to hear.
The people at The Ivy would have been at The Ivy that night even if P wasn't in town. They certainly weren't at the concert. (When P asked "how many were at the show tonight" very few said "yeah").
And the people at the Ivy usually listen to dance music (the fast beats stuff) and have no knowledge of any P music other than the few hits from the 80s that do get played on the radio.
Also the Ivy people are in their early 20s and don't know the music that DJ Rashida played (eg Cameo) nor Public Enemy.

Few hardcore Prince fans were in the house.

(Another example - I was at the Lenny Kravitz gig a few months ago. He only played 2 songs from his latest album. Most songs were from his "Greatest Hits" album, and most people in the audience only knew the chorus for a few songs that night. The bulk of the crowd don't know it cos they don't hear it. They just go cos it's an international performance - and these are few and far between in Sydney)

I'm trying to explain why the crowds here may not know some music that those at a P concert in the US or Europe would know.

Astone you captured the crowd to a tee, mostly lacking in respect to the artists performing on stage. I was one of the few lucky Prince fans to get tickets at the door thanks to DJ Rashida so I was amped to even be in the same "small room" as Prince let alone be standing less than a metre from the man.

I'd never known Andy McKee before Prince brought him on stage to tour with him but respect needs to be given, his little warmup was quite amazing and agree it was quite disrespectful to see people not digging it and having their backs turned. What's with people nowdays, if it's not some techno 180bpm flavour of the month Euro DJ song it isn't hot? What happened with appreciating music played by musicians using real instruments.

I think the majority of the crowd was expecting Prince to play Purple Rain or "concert" type material instead of just seeing the NPG jam, Shelby had to numerous times *force* the crowd to get involved, and I don't mean hype the crowd up but get them to react to the music (WTF?). As you pointed out few in the crowd went to the concert and now those same people are even more unlikely to buy tix to the 3rd concert. I was completely perplexed seeing the crowd act "indifferent" to DJ Rashida spinning some classic hip hop/funk/r&b.. I mean she started off with "Knot Just Knee Deep" and I was going crazy just from hearing that being played, even if you don't know the track the dance-ability and funkiness of the track is a 12 out of 10, sadly most people around me were too busy talking, texting to even try to appreciate it. Various hip hop tracks got played and the reaction was the same, I think people only really got into it when "My Perogative" got played.. sigh. Our radio stations have really conditioned the listeners to segmented music, I won't even go into detail on the state of the "R&B" that gets played nowdays on the radio.

Most people in the room don't realise how lucky they were to be in attendance especially when a lot of die hard fans missed out. It's a shame but I'm glad the crowd's non-responsiveness didn't prevent Prince getting up on stage and jamming a little and performing a few songs. I seriously thought based on the poor reception the girls got while they were warming up that it was going to be a short show with Prince just jamming a bit on bass at most. For an example of a breakdown of the crowd, ie. Prince fans vs Ivy regulars, I saw a video floating around on youtube filmed from the very back of the room with Prince performing "She's Always In My Hair". 5% of the room are going ape shit, the other 95% are mostly indifferent semi-swaying, standing still.

I hope for everyone's sake that this hasn't tarnished the image of what Sydney fans are like and that there will indeed be a 2nd aftershow in Sydney after the 3rd Sydney show and that it's a room filled with mostly fans (ie. announced through fan channels only), there'll definitely be a lot of love in the room and Prince may even bless us with some rare track before he departs our shores.

intheplace2b - thanks for your note

Apparently the list below was intended set list for The Ivy (Prince Live @welcome2aus posted this on Twitter)

I could never take the place of your man - PLAYED - AMAZING

Guitar - NOT PLAYED

Anotherloverholeinyohead - NOT PLAYED

She's always in my hair- PLAYED - AMAZING

Dreamer - INSTRUMENTAL NO VOCALS

Empty Room - NOT PLAYED

The bird- NOT PLAYED

Since then I think I could never take the place of your man, She's always in my hair, & Dreamer were played at the big concert in Melbourne - Melbourne you are very lucky!!

I don't know if Prince intended to play the set above. From looking at princevault.com late 2011 it looks like it is usually called an NPG Afterjam, and Prince often plays while the girls sing.

At The Ivy Prince sang She's always in my hair into Shelby's mike facing away from the stage.

I'm pretty sure that if the crowd had been better we'd have heard more from this amazing man.

If the venue enforced the no cameras in my face rule he would have played more

If the crowd was more Prince fans and not elite Sydney Ivy crowd (it was more like a private party for Ivy patrons, with very few hardcores)

If the crowd was more hardcore Prince fans, the place would have been jumping to Rashita and Prince would have responded...

I have seen this before... At HOB in Hollywood last year, by the end of the night which was 5am.. The crowd up front was gettting too drunk and someone did something to Prince that was rude, I can't remember what and he just cracked the shits and walked off.

If he would bring back the NPGMC and have wrist band access to his real fans, then I believe the night would have been much better and he would have been respected and he would have in turn played the full set.

The full set would have been amazing with Empty Room and The Bird..

If Prince does do another after jam and doesn't intend to perform, then it should be clearly indicated - NPG Afterjam - Prince may be there and may or may not perform. Then people won't be disappointed if he doesn't perform.

If there is an afterjam after one of the upcming concerts, then this website would be a good way to get the real fans to attend. There is also the Prince Live@welcome2aus Facebook & Twitter feed that I think the more keen fans are monitoring, and would be a good way to get the word out.

It seems odd to me that there was an article that there would be an aftershow in Melbourne last weekend. During the concert apparently Prince said there would be an aftershow. But later when he came back for an encore he said the afterparty begins now, and performed a few more tracks. Is that what he meant? That it was that bit at the end of the show??

Just before the concert DJ Rashida had tweeted to stay tuned.

I guess I'd prefer they only say there will be an aftershow during the concert, if they mean there really will be one. I imagine lots of people were wandering around Melbourne last night trying to figure out if they were missing something.

I guess there will probably be one after the 30 May concert in Melbourne.

I'd like there to be one after the 22May Sydney concert. If so I hope it gets mentioned here first or first tweeted by Prince Live@welcome2aus so those who go are keen fans.

Unless it was somewhere other than the Ivy. Basement has a couple of free nights around the 22nd- would give Syd a chance to redeem itself. Or else theres plenty of room here at my place for the NPG to set up and for more than a few org'ers - but only the funky ones.

Funny that the set included Partyman, a bit unexpected
& Seal sang bits of Kiss From A Rose
- both these songs r from different Batman movies.. Performed at the same gig by 2 diff artists. That's kinda, well, a bit coincidental I'd say

Both Warner artists, both made alot of money from a Warner music soundtracks to a DC Comics IP owned by Warner.

Seal had already released that track on his album and Warner just went through their artist catalogue and chose his track as the "love song" and also chose a track from Jewel amongst others and so really it was a compilation of tracks not written for or inspired by the movie, but rather a showcase of Warner artist's tracks from the time. Jewel's they added strings etc and they tried to shape the compilation into a theme much like any themed compliation but it was nothing on Prince's approach.

Prince on the other hand, worked with the director and the lead actor and goes on set and goes away and writes and records an entire album and comes back and presents it and even creates his own characters inspired from the film... and then goes away again and records more tracks and delivers what i think, was one of the most interesting Prince albums ever.

I think Seal could only dream of being that creative.

- I am listening to it now. It seems from the link above that Prince plays bass from "Jam" to "I know you got soul / 911 is a joke" (because I saw the vid with Prince on bass with Flava). But it´s Ida playing on ´Jam of the Year´...on which songs exactly is Prince on bass?

Love Batman albumn. Think Vicki Waiting is an amazing song.

I think Seal is respectful of Prince - I think Seal called Prince "the greatest of the great".

Prince was on bass early - for Mutiny - as shown on the princevault page.

Somewhere in the 1st or 2nd jam he played a bit of keyboards too.

He was mostly off stage up until Rude Boy.

Before Rude Boy he would sometimes sing over the loudspeaker, but from off-stage behind the DJ table where we couldn't see him.

Just before Rude Boy the crowd started calling for Prince and he came out and played a bit of guitar on that, then Play that funky music, and Brown Skin.

Then Prince played bass on I know you got soul.

Then Prince made the whole band leave the stage and shortly after it looked like the whole band and entourage were leaving.

Then the band did come back and Prince played guitar for the remainder of the evening.

(At least this is my best attempt at remembering what happened. Sorry I don't remember it more clearly.)

From about 1am I think it was 10 mins of Andy, then 1 hr of Rashida, then 40 mins of the band without Prince, then 40 mins with Prince on guitar.
