SUPERSTAR Prince is planning a secret show in Melbourne. Prince is eager to do one of his post-midnight ''after shows'' following a sold-out performance at Rod Laver Arena tomorrow. He is sifting through a number of inner-city venue options. An announcement, with ticketing details, is imminent. Meanwhile, Prince was scheduled to play an after show for 400 punters at The Ivy club in Sydney early today. His secret shows and after shows, performed at small clubs, feature rarities, covers, jams and hits, and often run over three hours. And, on the strength of his Sydney shows, the royal rocker is ready to make Melbourne go crazy. Prince set the scene - and the standard of what live performance should be - in a commanding show of hits and unmatchable funk attitude at his opening shows in Sydney. Prince still has that fire - and then some. His set - a tireless run of classics including When Doves Cry, 1999 and Kiss - included seven encores, every high note intact, dazzling costume changes and the sharpest shimmies in show business. Highlights included a quaking version of Mountains, a bracket of drum machine soul (Hot Thing, Forever In My Life, Nasty Girl) and Love Thy Will Be Done, a hit for singer Martika. Prince, 53, is rightly proud that he and his band, NPG, are the genuine article. ''This is real music by real musicians,'' he asserted during Delirious. ''Aint nobody better than this.'' Later, in a cheeky reminder of his influence and genius, he urged: ''Somebody slap your neighbour and tell them how many hits Prince has got.'' Prince then admitted: ''I don't know how many hits I've got.'' But he kept playing them, one after another, on and on, long into the night. I've got a feeling that the Melbourne aftershow could be on Tuesday night at Palace Theatre, because the tickets have to be either sold through Ticketmaster or Oztix (they deal with Palace Theatre, not Ticketek, which is a relief, incompetent halfwits). The Sydney aftershow was on after the second night so in theory it could happen in Melbourne too, but i could be wrong. If anybody out there hears anything, please post it. I agree with you milesb, plus also Public Enemy aren't the type of group who would change their concert venue plans for just anybody. There are logistics to be sorted out. I just hope that i can get my hands on an aftershow ticket. "Revolution My Ass" | |

Ok - so we know Prince loves to play his music, and loves to play in front of people who also love his music. So, just in case Prince would consider another aftershow in Sydney perhaps he would consider the Metro (George St, Sydney). http://www.metrotheatre.com.au/ I was there to see Dweezil Zappa a few months ago and security was very good at noticing when people tried to video record with their camera phones and either telling them to stop or shining a light at the phone. (The crowd was hilarious - a bunch of guitar heads all standing dead still watching Dweezil play the guitar like his dad.)
I was there the next day to see Ziggy Marley, and let's just say there was a more relaxed attitude to people recording with their camera phones.
In other words, the Metro security staff could probably help prevent another IVY like outcome. (I've reviewed the IVY afterparty and am convinced it was primarily the cameras in his face that soured the evening and made Prince leave.)
Also the stage at the metro is higher than the dance floor, so if people do raise their phone (and they inevitably will, even if only to take a picture) at least Prince would be a few metres away and so it wouldn't be right in this face.
I think the Metro can handle more people than the Basement. I think the Basement gig 10 yrs ago went well, so hopefully Prince will give Sydney hardcore fans another chance to hear the music he prepared for an afterjam.
Otherwise, I'm really hoping I'll get to hear the 3 tracks I heard at the IVY at the main gig on Tues 22 May - I could never take the place of your man - slow jam (tears flowed); She's always in my hair; Dreamer. Dreamer was just incredible - incrementally building and building. I was speechless all the way home. (Quite something for a chatterbox like myself.) [Edited 5/17/12 16:41pm] | |

So with the after show being announced for after the Brisbane concert tonight, what's the likelihood of there being one in Melbourne on the 30th going by the tweet from Friday last week about "1 show down, 9 to go". I'm hoping like everyone else that there will be one, but is it now looking less likely? | |

Chances are slim, but the remaining concert dates are a few days apart, so I think he would consider it if the fans are keen. Brisbane afterjam looks like it went well, and I'm sure there are Sydney fans who are just as keen to see an afterjam. | |

I posted this under "Melbourne Herald Sun May 31: Prince mania hits" - but am putting it here to help amass info and make it easier to chase the after show next time. So it's about slight differences in wording ("afterjam"), and price differences ($100+). I think Twitter ended up being the quickest way to find out about them (but had to sift through tons of gunk to find the good stuff). Also, they are unlikely to do an afterjam when they have a big gig the next night. Look for the nights which are not immediately followed by a big gig. And if there is a gap in the schedule, turn into a vampire and stalk them. DJ Rashida tweeted about every afterjam. But you need a back-up team to go stand in line while you stay and wait for the last last encore at the main gig.
I think we can safely say Prince performing at HiFi Melb on 30/31 May was unlikely. Consider the tweets sent out by DJ Rashida... RASHIDA @DJRASHIDA 30 May At start of show tweeted... The 30 May event after the main gig was described as Official Thank You Australia Party.
Also notice the price difference - $100-$200 for the afterjams or shows where the band and Prince would perform.
(Yes, you have to be Sherlock Holmes to spot the differences, but they are there. I point them out in case we need to know next time - if there is a next time in a Twitter-infested world. ).
Please note Melbourne that I think you had Prince on stage on 15 May performing more songs because there was no afterjam. At the Ivy afterjam the stand out performances were ICNTTPOYM and Dreamer, and I believe he played both on 14 May and ICNTTPOYM on 15 May. (I'm sure the setting was better than the Ivy. At the Ivy we only got guitar on Dreamer - no vocals).
And in case you want more, on 15 May at the Melbourne concert the following was tweeted by (Prince is being quoted I think) Prince Live @welcome2aus "Where's the Afterparty? Wherever it is Take Me With U" Big tease!!!
And much later during the concert Prince Live @welcome2aus "Damara bring some dancers on stage the Afterparty has begun" lol
So I think perhaps Prince considered the many extra encores on 15 May to be a kind of afterjam...
Check http://www.princevault.co.../Main_Page for setlists and it indicates the length of show on 14 May was 130 mins, 15 May was 160 mins.
