gee dfunk i didn't know everyone on here must like every concert prince does. thanks 4 letting me know that once again, anyone who didn't like a performance is a meserable, negative, pessimistic, glass half empty kind of soul. maybe we should all be so brainwashed like u and can't offer their concert experience to the world.

i give dandeeland props 4 stating how he/she feels about their own concert experience. and the fact that dandeeland gave their honest opinion of the show and the song choices cause belive it or not, there are many fans that feel the same way about the constant songs being played over and over.

if u prefer 2 listen 2 the same things over and over goodie 4 u but it doesn't give u the right 2 call someone a miserable person.

I feel it's warranted given that he seems to have liked barely anything in the concert. And the songs that he/she says are over played, also just happen to be amongst the most successful/most popular songs of Prince's career. Probably explains why they get regular plays at Prince concerts.

Yeah I think that would have been better. Sorry to offend you. I guess I have to say Prince is God and he does nothing bad EVER on this site huh. Sorry to offend you but I thought it sucked. I have seen Prince 25 times now and this was the worst ever to me.

Just because you didn't like the setlist doesn't mean it wasn't a great show, performance-wise he killed it. Besides, you've seen him 25 times? It's a universal fact that we humans don't appreciate what's abbundant, maybe you should have a thought for the less fortunate folks who would die to see him once, let alone 25 times.. confused

DFUNK said:

Ok, so the Sampler set is really just a nice way of saying that Prince wastes a good 10-15 minutes of the show singing over pre-recorded backing tracks, right? For somebody who seems to bang out the "real music by real musicians" mantra on an endless basis, isn't this exactly the type of rubbish he criticizes? If I wanted to see somebody singing over a backing track, I'm sure I can get that at a Karaoke bar in Cabramatta. At a Prince concert, I want to hear Prince and his band singing and playing every note live. eek

I wouldn't say he wasted time doing the sampler set, it gave everyone a taste of some classic tracks despite the time constraints and gives his band a break. By the way, this is not "somebody" singing, this is the man himself, didn't you hear him? "This cannot be reproduced by any live band, because I am that band" lol

unless someone is in prince's employment, not one fan who attends the concert will know what the songs will be played besides purple rain probably. that song is usually my bathroom break song anyway. and i do know another long time fan that can't stand raspberry beret and 4 her that's her bathroom break song. all i'm saying is that the name calling was unnecessary. if u dig hearing LGC etc for the thousand time then that's ur choice and preference but no one calls u a miserable person for doing so.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Yeah but the thing is, a concert like this has to accommodate all manner of fans. Dandeewhatever is clearly speaking as an obsessed one eyed Prince stalker who by their own admission, has been to some two dozen Prince concerts.

For many, who will only manage to get to one Prince concert in their lifetime, they would possibly be disappointed if Let's Go Crazy and Raspberry Beret weren't in the set list.

Aside from anything else, like it or not, but songs like Let's Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, 1999, Kiss, Raspberry Beret, Purple Rain, Sign O The Times are all for various reasons, defining points in Prince's career.

Could you imagine if Michael Jackson didn't do Billy Jean in a concert because some fans have heard it too many times? There would be riots just about if he dumped Billy Jean from the set list.

^ I agree, Prince plays the hits because thats what the majority of audience wants. when there is like 20,000 + at a concert, the hardcore fans that have seen him multiple times only make up a very small percent of the goers, he has to cater for the masses, this is not hard to figure out and its been like this for years this nothing new. Still not sure why hardcore fans are still bitching about it, you knew what to expect in all honesty, you knew he was gonna play the hits. Prince can't be what you personally want him to be. If you don't like what hes playing then don't go. Simple tings. 10s and 1,000 of others who are delighted with his concerts.

but even prince in his current hits only type shows hasn't done LGC or LRC in every show. the universal problem with ever artist is imo they never want that artist 2 grow or expand muscially. so if a fan goes 2 a prince show once in their lifetime and he doesn't do raspberry then it's the same mentality as a fan who would love 2 never hear that song performed live.

but i'm in total agreement with u about prince at this stage HAS to accomodate all manners hence having a balance show of rare/new songs along with hits is a good balance and smart marketing.

As a hardcore fan I am in total agreement with this statement and have said so several times recently with this W2 GH tour

Even now 'casuals' are on facebook moaning about hits he didn't play at the Allphones concert they went to! He really does have too many hits - and is not able to satisfy all casual fans, let alone hardcore ones.

'surrender your expectations' - that way you won't be disappointe

Dandeeland has every right to complain about Prince playing the stock standard "hits" yet again. But this tour is essentially a greatist hits tour and has been advertised as such...so its hardly an Earth-shattering revelation.

The curious thing for me is that he/she can't wait to see Buddy Guy, who's been playing the same stuff for sixty fucking years! I expect dandeeland to boo loudly during the 18 millionth time Buddy plays Sweet Home Chicago - with the same five licks hes been using for at least the last three decades.

I hate the sampler set. Every fan I asked who has any musical ability or training thought it was some of the most cheesy shit anybody could pull. All the people who went to the show to see what kind of hair Prince has loved it.

If he played 3 hour shows every night, maybe I could excuse it, but all 6 shows I went to were less than 2 hours and when you consider the sampler set, and Shelby carrying on, it seemed that Prince involvement was a lot lower than it should've been.

Since I have seen around 10 shows since from artists older than Prince, it is hard to believe that every single one of them sang lead on more songs than Prince, and played more full length songs than Prince. Even in a bad Prince show, he still has some amazing moments, but he also goes through the motions a bit much. I can't stay away from a Prince concert, but the wonderful moments are much less than ONA or Musicology.

I am a huge fan of several other artists. On the fan sites for the other artists, nobody is complaining about singing over a tape for a sampler set, and nobody is complaining about background singers shouting Put Your Hands Up too much. Why? Because nobody else pulls this lame shit!!!! Because those other artsits perform their hits in full length versions, and their singers sing all the lead vocals.

I do see some minor bickering on other artists sites about setlists, etc...but Prince takes major shortcuts and doesn't do as much as he can. I will admit that in 2011, it was the first tour where every show I went to was under 2 hours.

Like I always say, there are 3 types of Prince fans:

1. Prince is so wonderful...everything he does is wonderful. I really hope Shelby sings lead on ten songs tonight, and want Larry Graham and Tony M to be there!

2. Prince is horrible. The show was the worst piece of garbage I have ever seen.

3. Prince did great on some songs, and totally went through the motions on some others. He is truly amazing at times, and sometimes I shook my head as I heard so many cover songs.

I am a type 3, and proud of it. I could hardly understand thinking everything was great or everything was horrible. Shhh and Anotherloverholenyohead are almost always amazing. Shelby is almost always annoying. She's full of talent, but Prince misuses her by far.

Well, I am not one to make excuses for Prince. But, aftershows have always had him play covers and showcase the female singers. The fact that Shelby does so much during the main show drives me crazy. The fact is, Prince is happy with this, and there's nothing I can do about it. I can complain on here, but then the masses here will complain about my complaining, which is funny, since somebody complaining about complainers is actually complaining.

Question for those who attended the concert. I m aware that Andy Mc Kee performed at the aftershow, but how is he playing on the regular concerts? Does he perform only during an acoustic set? If so, Prince plays with him or only sings?

There hasn't been an aftershow at any concert I have attended since the Atlanta one in 2002. There have been many afterparties where you plunk down cash hoping he will play, and then you torture yourself with bad club music at a club where they won't play any Prince, but you wait around for hours...maybe Prince walks in at some point, sits in a VIP area for 20 minutes while the masses gawk at him, and then he leaves.

At his age, aftershows are not common anyway, but It would be so nice to not make it some stupid mystery. It stinks to spend extra money for nothing.

I don't mind Shelby...I'm just annoyed because he's always like "Shelby this and Shelby that" and Liv and Elisa don't seem to get their rightful spotlight. Overall though he seems to overutilize his backup singers nowadays
