Despite grumbling critics I can't wait. Prince can't be held responsible for sound problems in a venue, he looks like he was cooking and as for the set list, sounds like he is trying hard to please everyone, some for the casuals, some for the hardcore fans. Do agree about merchandise, the Hits!!!!! How about copies of 20Ten or some of the NPGMC stuff, that would sell volumes. Shirts are fairly priced by $100 for a Tambourine is a bit much. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

He played Let's Go Crazy, we got the first guitar solo & then went into I think Delirious and possibly something else, so he put the guitar down for a while and danced around until somehow we made our way back into the "Go Crazy..." breakdown. Then when the guitar was handed back he turned it up and it just made a loud humming sound ( sometimes happens when effects pedals are not plugged in the right way ). He stomped a few pedals to see what was going on then just casually took off the guitar and tossed it in the air to his guitar tech to fix. Thus aborting the guitar solo ending of Lets Go Crazy.. Which admittedly I was looking forward too (who isn't???) but he did not miss a beat and just improvised around it.. after all if there is one thing this guy does bloody well people is it not improvising?? It wasn't such a big deal as people may think 5. I think the show was amazing despite what some have said. Definitely waaaay better than the show I saw in 03. my seats then weren't the best and I remember it being very subdued and most sitting in their chairs all night but last night was like a giant friggin house party!! He really made the whole arena feel small. And such a diverse crowd! I had good seats where everyone was up and now my feet are sore from non stop dancing and my voice is shot from screaming all night but I have to pull myself together to do it all again in afew hours hahaha.. My only slight disappointment was in the encore. He made us cheer for aaaaages then FINALLY came back & bashed out a quick rockin version of Peach which was great but that was it, he left abit prematurely when everyone was there primed ready for more and still going nuts. He could've played more but for whatever reason chose not to. Oh well... 6. He played the Hohner tele all night! No strats! No whammy!!! Rant over. [Edited 5/11/12 16:37pm] Honest assessment overall. The guitar malfunction was a bit disappointing and for it to happen right at the point everyone is expecting - end of Let's Go Crazy - bit of Murphys Law right there for everyone to witness. But he just got on with it. Didn't miss a beat. I was really hanging for Little Red Corvette but still enjoyed it immensely. How much of it was improvised? In lieu of the dead guitar? With all the "I wanna talk about ur body". Loved the sampler set. Hearing those songs in original form that loud and feeling that beat right through ur body was amazing. It doesn't sound that great on paper but hearing it "live" was something else. The opening was beautiful and for me totally unexpected. Mountains was hot. Now I got to say, it takes a lot for me to get a teary eye and dammit he managed to do that with Purple Rain. The emotion in the arena during purple rain was just breathtaking. It was truly epic.

Totally agree! this is meant to be a thread on the May 11th show, not bloody grown men whinge and bitching about everything Prince does, its really creepy and embarrasingly sad.

I want a bootleg for this show for just Jam of The Year alone.
Love Thy Will Be Done is a classic to me. I don't like anybody else (including Martika) singing this song but Prince. When this live recording comes out, I'm stoked to what him playing LTWBD will sound like.
I'm totally envy the Australians of the org.

By the way, regarding that stupid SMH review. Since when has "Gold" been one of his weaker songs? I always thought that it was a fantastic song, and certainly a great final track on The Gold Experience album. I can't help but think he might have performed it for the irony. Singing "all that glitters ain't gold" whilst standing proudly on stage in a glittering gold outfit.

LTWBD was a surprise and was awesome to here live with him singing it.
Lets see what tonight brings out.
Some guitar solos pleaseeeeeee

Well said, I agree with almost all of that. I do think the encore is pretty normal for Prince though..I saw him in America, do an encore, crowd screams and he comes out and does 1 track and then off again. And then again. If you keep screaming he will keep coming back. I will never forget the Forum first show last year. He kept coming back out 5 encores! But you have to make some noise people...

GAH!!
I really wish I was here!!!
I wonder if Prince is on Tumblr?
Because I just posted on there 'Love...Thy Will Be Done'. Maybe he saw it? LOL. (I'm wishful thinking...But its odd how he choose to release this around the same time I uploaded it.) It's such an amazing song, and it really speaks VOLUMES TO ME!
The whole set list seems so very good!
I was a bit sadden to hear the guitar problems. I know he was angry, but the rest of the days are promising!! I can't wait to see what is next!
He looks fresh, and his hair is on point! I know Prince has so much to offer, and God bless him! He ain't showing no signs of slowing down!
That man just goes on and on, because he is in no space or time! It's Button Therapy, Baby!

That was an historic night. remember on the radio the next day peeps were talking about it. The next night he didn't do it.. Prince is so unpredictable U never know what he is going to do next.. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

And I loved the sampler set...he played pretty full versions and the sound for that was wicked. LTWBD was awesome, long intro quite a lot like that awesome version from the Astoria bootleg in '95. And no Sly covers! Tonight's gonna kill it.

To me the show was really a bit underwhelming, and for the first half I was actually thinking it was terrible. I'm looking forward to when Prince moves on from these arena type shows and back to a smaller style concert with more focus on the musicianship.
Opening with Gold felt pretty weak, surprisingly, and for a few songs it felt like they were just going through the motions, like a second rate tribute act. $ is one of favourite tracks from recent albums, but didn't work well live (probably not helped by the bad sound), and segueing into Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy was cheesy. And for a while, it felt there was way too much focus on the back up singers, who really do need to be ditched. And too many gaps with nothing happening that spoilt the flow. As things went on, though, it really did pick up, and some songs worked great. And by end, you couldn't fail to think that Prince had worked really hard to satisfy everyone. Although Purple Rain went on way too long - it felt like it took about 10 minutes to start!
I have been spoilt then it comes to Prince shows. I was at the Xenophobia week in 2002, and my god, what an experience that was. Every night I was just gobsmacked all over again by how great he is. But the 2003 Sydney shows were also fantastic, partly because it was on show just how great the band was. John Blackwell - wow. If last night was the only time I'd seen them, I'd have no opinion whatsoever on what John Blackwell was like as a drummer.
Having said that, last night, after making the arena wait for 15 minutes wondering if he was coming back, he can stroll on, run through Peach, throw the guitar away, walk off, and all is forgiven. You know, this is all really needs to do. Enough with the cheesy teasing of the crowd, the getting people to dance on stage, Shelby waving flags around and all the other extra stuff. Just play a great song, and we're going to love it.

Yeah i now realize how rare those nights are... if he is in the right mood and the conditions are right, he will play all night. No curfew at The Forum. I think Sydney has a curew due to the trains etc.
We were at the same show. It was crazy... that night... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The show was exciting, yet at times I felt the frustration of it not being a smooth show. AS has been touched on, there were some long breaks...confusion...and the sound issues were unforgivable. That guitar "tech" is hopefully scanning the classifeds for a new job today. That old guy was woeful. Stuffed the Lets Go Crazy outro, kept getting in the way and when Prince forced him back to the 'underworld' of the circle it was the final straw for him I reckon. But for the lack of readiness by Allphones venue and staff regarding the production values, there were countless moments of magic that no other artist could make you feel. The unique performance of Purple Rain (finishing the song softly before bringing it back with a 1,2,1234...count in for a great guitar solo outro/ Jam of the Year new arrangement/ Cool was a highlight/ Peach encore with bike entry/ and the sampler set was incredible with just about full vocal versions of When Doves Cry/ SOTT/ Forever in my Life/ Hot Thing was amazing to see live. I got the feeling that the extra's in the songs and the Peach encore were to make up for the guitar drama's early in the show. You could see he was PISSED when he launched the guitar off stage towards the tech area below but he didn't take it out on us....it was smiles and lively jaunts with multiple "Sydney...we're on a first name basis tonight" throughout. Can't wait for tonight...think it will be a superior show in all respects.

last time i saw him in brisbane during musicology, it was all about him the instruments and music. non of this back up singers, dancers. i loved it. the encore was unforgetable, not sure what songs he did it was just funk and jazz instrumental, like something off trc, bloody i want some of that again. i thought all his encores were like that. if i want to hear peach, i look it up.

What was funny that first night. The casual fans which was the majority not knowing Prince's ways. Left after the first encore. know they felt cheated when they heard later he played more hours. knew he wasn't leaving that soon. Knew his mood. It just left more room 4 me 2 get around the stage.. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Merch question: How much were the black tees with the orange design?
Also were those symbol necklaces really $15? Are they made of pewter or something?!

Didn't go to the show, but I'm very happy with the setlist. I'm fine with a hits show as long as there's a few rarities. I'm happy he did these...
I hope a quality bootleg circulates. [Edited 5/11/12 21:55pm]
