He left because the crowd around him got outta control. Someone stuck around into his section and snapped a picture of him. His security nearly crushed him trying to stop the person from taking anymore pictures. People were constantly trying to sneak pictures, that's why he kept his back turned. The moment he stood up or turned around to see fans, flashes started going off. It just got to a point where it was getting reckless and he couldn't enjoy himself.

I hear what you're saying and maybe they should have patted fans down better on entry to the club and taken cameras/camera phones off them...but I still say if you're gonna charge that much money then it should guarantee a performance, by Prince, not his backing band or a 3 minute cameo but a proper afterSHOW...or make it crystal clear, one way or the other, that he will be or won't be playing...its only fair...for too many yrs there has been this ambiguity about after shows/parties/jams...yrs ago when they were free or cost next to nothing to get in and were word of mouth affairs then it was fair enough and likely as not he usually played a kick ass set, full of his more obscure stuff/unreleased stuff, it was great...these days they announce it days in advance, charge way too much and then have some dj spinning discs while Prince may not even show his face or if he does he sits behind his purple rope...sorry but for me it just aint cute anymore...not at those prices...as the old saying goes "you can fool some of the fans all the time and all of them some of the time, but u can't fool all of them all of the time".

I live nowhere near Canada, but just based on the info that I have heard I think it's safe to say this isn't Prince's fault. He's not obligated to do an aftershow or afterparty. He may have said it on that radio interview, but it seems like a slip that he mentioned it, or maybe that he felt pressured in that moment to mention it in the interview.

I am taking a guess, but it seems to me that since he said it on the radio, the club owners or whoever then took the ball and ran with it. Made flyers, created a $60 cover charge, probably went out that day and stocked up on beer. They were going to capitalize.

At that point Prince probably felt obligated to at least show up and hang/jam a little since all those people were there. Inside Prince's mind, he was probably a little annoyed that the club started promoting it with flyers and such.

He could have just not shown up at all... It was probably the club's doing with that $60 fee. Because I know I saw his aftershow for free and it was only announced after the arena show.

Prince never gets pressured into something or feels obligated to do something. If that were the case he wouldnt have had all these lawsuits against him in the past few years so sorry but I dont buy into that part of your argument (not that you were arguing, lol)

You say in so many words that 'years ago they were free and so much better...', but i remember in the early 1990's he booked out the Astoria in London for 5 aftershow nights and only played on the last night, and it was still roughly 20 UK pounds to get in every night ... that is roughly $40 and that was nearly 20 years ago !!

I really dont think anythings changed that much... its a gamble and it always has been. Maybe in the 80's when he first started doing them it was different, but you're talking 30 years ago.

I bought my ticket with zero expectations... and yeah it is quite a bit of cash to gamble, but i knew it would still be quite a fun night whatever happens.... and you know what, the people I went with had a great time, it's only when you come on the Prince fan site that everyone is moaning.

The simple answer is not to go if you're THAT worried about it.

It was March 1995 during the Gold Experience tour and I remember it well, I was there all 5 nights.They billed it as "Glam Slam Astoria". So yeah you're right its nothing new, he's been 'dishonest' with his fans for decades now.

It was a Prince sanctioned event. Information about the tickets was leaked by Dr. Funkenberry since Prince doesn't have an official website anymore, and he was in talks with Prince's camp for about a day as they decided how exactly they were going to go about selling tickets. Prince's camp made up flyers, not the club, and the flyers stated "Join Prince & The NPG for their official Toronto afterjam".

If he had not shown up AT ALL, I probably would have thought for a second about asking for my money back. But he did the bare minimum required to fulfil any obligations one could have gleaned from the promotion of the events.

he makes more money in cash for the after shows than the concerts some times,he gets 100 percent of the door and the club gets the booze and press.

so at 1000 people he makes 100 grand for basicaly nothing.

well.. let's see... if you wanted another mini-concert after the main event, then no, it wasn't worth the $60+$7 in services charges for tickets most of us paid in advanced. if however, you wanted to take in the whole experience of the concert + after jams and party in presence, then it was well worth it for me!

on friday around 1:35AM he was escorted in and seated opposite the dj booth, across the room from rashida, as this was the area that appeared to have been reserved for him. he quickly moved and set up shop next to rashida. he didn't do much but it was fun watching him since i've never been that close to the master of funk himself. while seated there, he would get up on the sofa and snap pictures of us, blinding us all with the flash of his big camera. he did this a few times. andy allo posted a few of these on her FB page. he then played for under 5 minutes as reported earlier. he left around 2:30AM

on saturday, he came in straight to the dj booth at around 2:30AM. he wasn't facing us much. from the sofa beside rashida he interacted with the crowd as reported earlier. he sang, and moved a bit more within the confined space. security blocked much of the view but i was close again to see him. looooooove hime!! somebody brought in one of the $80 tambourines from the show and he extended his hand to borrow it. he asked a security member to hold his mic while he proceeded to play the shit out of it. he stayed about an hour before putting on his long back coat and jetting us all. good times... good times. best weekend ever!!!
