***Prince at Melkweg, 26/07 (AM) Mobeen’s ridiculous trip report from 2 shows in 24 hours*** I just got back to my place in London, after a 48 hour trip to Amsterdam. My head is a bit scrambled right now. Last night’s show at the Ahoy was fun. I was at the Kent show a few weeks ago and aside from a beautiful performance of Gold, this was a very similar show. This trip was all about Melkweg show for me. I’m finding a little difficult to express myself right now but I’ll try my best.
My missed my original flight from London to Amsterdam so I looked me and my boyfriend onto the next one. I’d posted on the org from London and asked for advice about getting into Melkweg. The general consensus was that I’d left it too late.
Arriving in Amsterdam at 21:30, I got a tram straight to Leidseplein. The cue for Melkweg ended at the tram stop. I got off the tram and I was in the cue. It was about 22:30. My boyfriend (not as fanatical as me) went to buy some weed. About 3 minutes later the cue started moving. I called my other half in a panic. He came running back and in 5 minutes we were facing Prince’s stage. I couldn’t believe how lucky we’d been.
I’ll leave the intricacies of the set list to others.
Here of some of the stand outs for me:
The stage was dimly lit. The vibe was dark and brooding. Prince was in a long black kameez. The sound was pretty perfect. He looked like he was on a mission.
As soon as the opening bars of ‘What’s my Name’ started, I thought we were in for a special show. The first song featured just John on drums, Cassandra and Morris on Keyes and P on bass. Some of the lyrics were altered ‘What’s on the radio? You slap my face...’ but this was pretty true to the album version. Long and loud. Dorothy Parker felt like the One Night Alone Version. The great sound rig meant every word was clear.
‘Beautiful Strange’ featured lots of altered lyrics. In fact almost everything was different. There was an amazing section in which Prince sang a line, repeated by Andy and so on and so on. They shared a mic. I think their chemistry is hot and Andy does add something valuable. I remember one line being something like ‘Androgynous pilot flying your plane. You wanna crash’. The lyrics were hugely ethereal. The guitar playing was insane. Lots of pedal effects.
I loved ‘I like it There.’ It was a long, long version with a lot of crowd participation. The ‘more than I love my hair’ section was very soulful. Guitar work was nuts again.
It was amazing to see Prince play guitar with one hand and keys with the other. ‘When we’re Dancing Close and Slow’ was slow, airy and beautiful. Controversy was ‘remixed’ as the entire middle section as played at half speed. This made everyone in the club feel stoned, even if they weren’t!
Guitar, Controversy, if I was your girlfriend and Kiss, were the only big or recognisable Prince songs played. The rest were all obscure. They were all long versions
I loved the way a lot of the show was just Andy and a stripped down band with Prince. Shelby came out half way and it changed the dynamic again. Shelby did lead on the Gap Band’s ‘Outstanding’. I think this was the greatest Shelby moment I’ve seen, and I’ve been seeing her since 2007. It was a great, sing a long airy version. Great percussion. Not corny or derivative, it sounded fresh.
Bambi was heavy. Colonized Mind sounded intense and gritty. Strange Relationship was clean.
This was probably the second best Prince show I’ve ever seen (beaten by the opening London night of One Night Alone’) but better than Montreux in 2009. To me this was better than the 13 main shows and 14 London after shows I saw in 2007 and also better than the Kent show this year.
Prince – I just love it when you play what you actually want to. I hope you continue to do these more challenging shows. It’s clear to me that this set list was alive and engaging for you. It was planned and textured. I love it when you push things in a particular direction rather than playing a big bunch of hits.
A tour of smaller venues concentrating on newer and crazier material would be a dream for me.
Huge Love.
I understand Andy posted a clip of the show but I think I missed it. If any one hears of any legal releases of this – please org note me,
x

Thats brilliant, did he give the mic to the audience or what? If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Good story, thanx for sharing. That's what the org is for! One of my highlights was Mutiny, a song I always secretly hoped he'd play. And Controversy/Sexy Dancer sounded like the stripped down Prince of old. And the show also made me realise how good this band is. Let's give Cassandra a big hand!!! she is one hell of a keyboard player. I can't shut up about this show, it really was The Ultimate Live Experience. But you're still one of the few members of the Andy Allo fanclub. Lovely afro, looks cute holding a guitar that you can't hear, but a lousy singer. But on a night like this even Andy could do no wrong. Peace! Be wild! Thank you. | |
