The Official 21 Nites of Dread Thread Based on some of the commentary i've read, this is a place for all the "True Fans(?)" to whimper, whine and moan about...
1) How Prince (regarding the set lists) hasn't performed like their personal juke-box.
...I could go on, but you get the picture.
...Complain
Ozone disappearing in the sky
China boy standing up to a tank
Complain, so much easier
Small kid begging for a crumb of bread
Lots of people crying for a little rain
[Chorus]
Black man singing Mississippi blues
Mr. Rush Limbaugh giving me the facts
[Chorus Out]
Music for adventurous listeners

Yes, the OP is clearly being sarcastic. He and I agree, what I treat we got with so many, so-ridiculously-cheap-that-they're practically-free, amazing and unique shows. Not since I got to see Dylan play the El Rey for 3 out of 5 nights in 1997 did I feel this treated by an artist who who sits among my favorite performers. what did you expect for 25 bucks? Prince ain't going to work all that hard if tix are only 25 bucks. You should know that by now. This was just a quick payday for him with as little work as possible. Be thankful you got to see him. Yeah the tour pretty much looked and felt like every tour since musicology but hey...$25 bucks!! What did you expect?

Yeah, I just didn't see the benefit of a dedicated Dread Thread. It's like quelling a fragmented, rioting crowd by giving them a stage and a microphone. I'm sure it'll be fun to read, though.

Because society is now a society of constant complainers and spoiled. How there are complaints about these shows are beyond me. Seems the key element lacking with these complainers is common sense~ they don't have to but tickets again and again and again. Simple as that.
Even more insulting...can you imagine complaining after spending $25 for a concert?????For Prince???
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I particularly like those who complain about the shows but admit they went back over & over again....
Thank you Sir, may I have another...

based on the reviews, he worked just as hard for $25 in the Forum as he did for $85-$324 in the Carolinas. All the Carolina shows were less than 2 hours, less than an hour and a half if you count where Shelby was on lead, or when Prince was just dancing. At least in the Forum, some of the shows were well over 2 hours.
Still, Shelby sings too much, and there are still too many cover songs, too many songs where Prince is not willing 2 do the work on vocals by either cutting out a lot of the vocals, or holding the mic to the crowd.
Of course this site is full of Prince fans who would rather hear the fans sing than Prince, and I know for a fact there are fans here that would rather have Prince play Karaoke by singing over a tape for 4 minutes hearing snippets of 10 songs, then have Prince play 2 extra full length songs.
Yes, I am aware that this thread has baited me in by giving me a chance to complain.
I will complain every chance I get, just like I will say that even the worst Prince concert is better than most other concerts...
it just stinks that someone capable of so much can go through the motions so much.
For example, "Mountains" should be a song with Prince on vocals. The girls are doing much of the singing, as Prince whispers into the mic on this song.
I've said it before, but Bruce Springsteen, who is older than Prince, and doesn't have even 25% of Prince's talent plays 3 hours plus, and 95% of a Springsteen show is him singing full length songs. I'd probably rather hear Prince brush his teeth, and ramble on about how he has "Too Many Hits," and then hear him ask for the 1,000th time during "Adore," if "Anybody Pregnant," then hear Bruce Springsteen do anything...
So, I have to learn to just be happy with what I can get.
Still, Prince sending his lawyers after the Family, not letting the Time use "The Time," is just silly, immature, and wrong.
Prince has a long history of disdain for his own friends, bandmates, and fans. He is so wealthy, and powerful, that he can do this. Oddly, someone with his wealth can't pay his taxes on time, and has to rent a house from Carlos Boozer.
Still, he has a studio output that I rank better than anybody else. That does mean something, but I would be a liar if I said being a Prince fan was easy.

the same price offered 2 LA that those didn't get in other cities man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Shhhhhhhh! you need to stop talking
"Prince ain't going to work all that hard if tix are only 25 bucks" Really? you are saying he didn't work hard?
"This was just a quick payday for him with as little work as possible" So he shows up at 6pm for rehearsal and leaves around 3am....yeah you are right
I am so glad I got to see him 6 times with a bunch of different people who have never seen him before, what a gift

You all should start your own website bipolarpincefans.org Never happy unless he comes over to your house and sings only the songs you want him to.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
No you are mistaken. They would NOT be happy.
If Prince came over some of these people's houses tomorrow morning while they were making breakfast and played "Dirty Mind' in its entirety followed by disc 3 of "The Hits/The B-sides" in its entirety followed by "The Black Album" in its entirety IN THIER LIVING ROOM and THEN gave free guitar lessons to their kids, they'd STILL BITCH about Prince making them late for work...or something. Trust me they would. [Edited 5/31/11 18:41pm]

Wow, that's pretty rough...
He actually has another place in LA now; he's out of Boozer's house.

Well...here's a sincere complaint:
If not at all of the shows, at least at the last one, Prince should introduce his full band appropriately and respectfully.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Valid complaint. I only heard him introduce the entire band once, on 5/5 during "Stratus."

The way Prince treated people on stage this tour was pretty rude, in general, but nobody seems to mind. The only reason I bring it up is because I can compare it to how he's been in this past, and it's much different now.
It's not like it's common practice for him to bring a woman up on stage, but when he did in the past, he would hold her hand and walk her off of the stage. Too many times during the Welcome 2 America Tour, and the 21 Night Stand, he walked away from women and they looked pretty confused up there, wondering if they should stay on stage or get off of it.
The way he introduced people on the stage was very inconsistent. Some times, he would ramble on, like he did Sunday about Maceo Parker and Nikka Costa and other times, not so much. Since he gave his background singers so much of the workload, I think he should have paid them much more respect and offered formal introductions to the audience. The stage is HUGE. So, why he felt it wasn't worth it to have EVERYONE line up and introduce them one by one to take a bow, I don't know, except for the obvious reasons: ego and control.
Whether people agree or not, showing that type of respect to the band and performers instills a great deal of confidence and provides a feeling of camaraderie. It also, AT LEAST, gives the illusion that he is trying to help further their careers, as opposed to what he's actually doing, holding them all back.

Without naming names necessarily, in your conversations with various band members did you pick up on any disharmoy or dissatisfaction..?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
i concur about this treatment of introducing band members. it seems this time around, he never gave the band members there shine or just singled out certain members of the band. in the past we got 2 know every single band member and felt like he gave the audience a chance 2 appreciate their talents. and as 4 bringing up people on the stage, it seems like it has been only A list people allowed 2 party with him man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I have nothing to whimper, whine or moan about, so I guess this will be my last post in this thread
btw those fans will continue 2 go into other threads complaining, thats what they do best my friend, you just created there meeting ground "How Can I Stand To..Stay Where I Am? Poor Butterfly Who..Dont Understand." P

Not the appropriate venue to discuss.
But like I alluded to at the beginning, if it doesn't bother the fans, then the point is for the most part, moot. What surprises me most is how people that have attended concerts, not just his in the past, are not familiar with respectable etiquette and treatment of a band. It's not like Prince was singing his songs by himself. It's not like Prince was singing lead in all of his songs. It's not like Prince even participated in all of the songs. So why NOW is he so reluctant to credit, praise, and introduce bandmembers? Again, I'm FULLY aware: ego and control. But are his fans too old to remember how he used to treat his band? Or all these fans just new? Pretty bizarre to me.

It pretty much sums me up. I'll bitch about how he could let Tony M in the band, and then bitch about how much ticket prices cost, and then I'll sell my first born on ebay to be on the front row. Well, just like I have the right to pay $324 for a ticket, I also have the right to complain as I damb well please, and if you don't like it, you can make a post about how you think Prince should have an entire concert where he plays a tape and sings karaoke over it for 45 minutes, and then walks out.

And on the keyboards: Some guy who will be in the band until I fire him again...
And on the drums: Another guy who I will fire again
And on the guitar: well, if I'm not playing it, there is no guitar part.
And on the bass: Rhonda wuzhername, I mean Ida whoever until I fire her
And on the background vocals: I don't know their names, but they will sing lead for 30 minutes of this hour and 45 minute show!
Since he has a different lineup for every tour, I don't really care who is in the band anymore. And calling them the NPG is stupid. He once said the Revolution could never reform since Revolutions only happen once. Somebody forgot to tell him that Power Generations can not be NEW forever.

Before this spirals out of control, even though my approach in starting this thread was done tongue-in-cheek, it was meant to garner a rational discussion and not an argument. "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
